    Gills are the best part. In my land it is forbidden for us kids to eat the meat which is devils meat Women and children eat the organs gills and shell of shellfish and fish or bones. . For nutrients and is better tasting than meat. And fathers eat the meat of water creatures. With bottles of rum and bathtub gin. As the meat of fish and shellfish makes people go crazy and throw up. My favorite is gills and eyes. I’m not complaining about scales and shells though. Those are good to eat also. Sorry for bad English.

  • @nichevo1

    @nichevo1

    10 ай бұрын

    You could eat. For instance the apron that he clipped off. It's just lacking in meat or flavor. The new soft shell is digestible or at least edible, but you're not going to get a ton of crab flavor or texture out of it. If you were hungry and you just wanted to eat it, you could eat it like that. As for the gills, which everybody is finding some other name for, my sister dotes on those some reason, or she used to. But yes, strip them out, if for no reason other than they're full of moisture and you're about to fry this crab. Also though you see that yellow in some spots? That's the main internal organ of the crab. Kind of like the green stuff in a lobster. Some people fancy that as well, I believe it's probably rich like any organ meat, and I won't vomit getting some in my mouth, but I don't hanker after it exactly. Again many do. But whether it's the yellow stuff or anything else in the body. Cavities, is there nothing else to clean out of these? In fact, thinking about it, I've been served whole fried, soft chels and the mustard, as some call. It, is inside, and the time I'm thinking of it. Least I felt that it didn't fry up so well, but maybe the crab itself wasn't great. Anyway, that you cut off the face to slaughter them is correct, then you cut off the apron, though ISTR it's pretty easy to tear off, as are the gills. The gill check I think is a good time to scrape out anything from the insides that you don't like, but again, the last time I slaughtered a carton of soft shells was ...before 2007. These are delicate animals, treat them with care and dignity and respect for their worth. I almost never see a live soft shell crab at a market, even those who pride themselves on their fish, and I would never buy a dead one.

    What does that crab measure, weigh, what is that classed as (jumbo, whale, etc), and what is market price for one of those or for a dozen? I remember going to the Fulton fish market and I called ahead and ordered a dozen whales and pick them up and took them home and dressed them and froze them. Enjoyed soft shell crab on demand for a year.

    Japanese style, not tempura i think ,more like fried in panko or maybe even just floured in seasoned cornstarch, however, they do their fried chicken. A nice treatment you can find at a lot of sushi restaurants is called a spider roll, that uses a whole, presumably deep fried, soft shell crab.
