My choreography process is very different, haha, first I chose a song I love, then from there I spend around an hour or two just listening to the song and imaging, what I could do in it, and then after that try, it out see if it works as it did in my head, from there refine, practice and change any parts that don't work

I listen to the music and try to Connect the words or a memory In my life so the emotion shows through to any one who is watching! I also do very similar things to you like improvisation and filming myself ❤️

Man, my PE teacher has given us a group dance assignment and as a beginner it’s been so hard to get anywhere. This video has helped a lot throughout the process and even though I’m not even close to done, I have made more progress than I ever though I could. Thank you.

I wish I could do that at my school. I’m a dancer and all we do in PE is soccer basketball and those kind of sports

Love this video! My choreographic process is find a song that I can connect to, listen to it lots and think up ideas of the dance including what part of the song I am using if not all of it, improv, start putting some steps together and soon enough it becomes a peace, record it to watch it back and perfect it, show people to get different opinions and feedback.

Your dancing is heartachingly beautiful! I'm about to choreograph a dance for my very first performance at a cultural event. Thank you so much for the tips.

My senior solo is coming up at my studio and this is really coming in handy!!

I love the idea about writing a poem. In some modern classes we take a phrase at a time and choreography to something short. Then build things together., I like this too.

ahh, this helped me so much! i have to do a solo to a song for colorguard and we need a one minute dance in it 😫

omg tysm i’m choreographing to once upon a december from anastasia

Its similar to your process, but with the difference, that I played the music also by myself before and starting without inspiration - I mean, I choose the piece of music not because it inspire me. I feel, it helps also to create the story and find fitting movements to this story. And also I watch a lot of dancevideos, to be in environment of dancing, because I am not that higly professional in this :)What is also different, I dont film the whole time while improvising, I only film, when the movements feel really perfect to the music, I tried it like you before, but then it feels like to much in head and to much from outside... Because then I only wants to look good, instead of bringing out what I am feeling, doesnt matter, if looks good, but actually then it is easier with the feelings. Also what happens to me sometimes is, that I am creating from the feeling I am in this moment, onetime I was frustrated and I only wanted to lie, but I had to get the choreo ready to the next day and I had nothing and then I said to myself, ok, when I only want to lie, the I dance in lying, and suddenly the inspiration came. Its also an accepting on where you are right in this moment. Do you write it down on paper also? And how do you warm up yourself for choreographing? Thanks for the vid :)

Writing a poem is a fantastic idea, or I may find an appropriate song. Ty so much! I was a trained dancer when I was young. Now my son is getting married, I want to honor that with the expression of dance...

so,, i chose my song but it's rather,, hip hop,, rather than contemporary or ballet- I'm not sure how I'd write a poem for my concept of Daa Daa Daa by vinny west lmaooo no but seriously, this vid helped a lot, and I was actually coming up with choreo as the video was playing!! It was so cool ah, i have the first line of my poem: the speakers boom through my rib-cage "turn that shit up"

I know I’m kinda late😅 but contemporary is non choreographed movements doesn’t really need any ballet training an jazz is kinda the opposite

Contemporary has a lot of grounded movement and focuses on fall and recovery as well - it's kind of an emotive mixture between ballet and modern dance. Contemporary is actually more similar to lyrical but contemporary is mostly choreographed to music without words whereas lyrical really focuses in on the lyrics (hence the name) of the music. Jazz however is a much more relaxed dance style with bend knees, flexed feet, splayed fingers and jazz hands. It includes most sharp and fast movements in contrast to most contemporary pieces.
