I love my plantation shutters. They are like furniture for your windows. Mine are wooden. They last forever. Expensive up front but you can change your room many times and colors without the added expense of doing expensive window treatments each time. I love the look of them from the street view. I would think that all interior decorators would not like them - less income for them., I like the way they function also.

OMG - Thank you for "hating" blinds and shutters. Have lived in my home for 28 years. We purchased white wood blinds for the majority of our windows when we moved in. At the time, it was the trend to get wood blinds because they were such an improvement over the horrible "mini" blind craze of the 80's. Had I known what a pain they are to care for, I would not have gotten them. They are dust magnets and take too much time to clean. My husband loves them. And from some of the comments, I see that a lot of men still prefer them. Taking a chance on saying, those guys aren't the ones cleaning them. Yes, I still have those blinds and I despise them. Room by room, I'm replacing them with shades or sheers with drapery panels. Some rooms need only the sheers. Thanks for the fabulously complete tutorial on everything for windows!!

Yes to shades, yes to sheers! lol blinds seem to be the practical choice when you start decorating the home because it’s quick, easy, and inexpensive. But once you start to truly “design” your space, you may see that there are SO many better choices out there! 🙌🏻 Thank you for watching Valri!

However, I have low windows in the corner next to that which have pull-down cellular blinds that are white while the others are a burlap-colored woven color. Would you change the blinds color? I mostly leave them open, though because my yard is beautiful. I’d actually like to put a banquette in that area, because it’s next to a dining room table, and it seems crowded. Thank you, Julie, for all your responses to me and everyone else. I can’t believe you make time for this! When do you sleep! 🌻💕 Oh! I just saw that you mentioned roller shades in a solar panel! I'm 66 myself and also financially challenged. I'm grateful mom taught me to sew. I wish I'd learned carpentry, electrical, and plumbing. But there's one thing I got right. I went to the best garden center in my area and hired a landscape architect. For only 50 dollars, we talked, she measured, and a week later, she yielded a scaled diagram. She did an expert design for the entire front of my home including the recommended plants and a breakdown of what it would cost for labor and material. We negotiated. It cut their profit so low that she nearly declined proceeding. Her crew cut out the sod and laid the brick edge. They planted the ornamental trees. I did the rest myself, grading the soil, the landscape fabric, lugging home and digging in all the shrubs and other plants. Gorgeous. I studied a lot of gardening books and learned enough to know I should hire a trained professional to avoid novice and costly mistakes. I redid my mother's front landscape by the same method after my father passed. He loved those overgrown evergreens. She did not. The point is you can sometimes barter work you cannot do yourself in exchange for things you can do. Perhaps you are active in your local church community and there's an electrician with fond memories of home cooked meals. Maybe you have a craft you could sell on line that brings in enough spare income for decor.

I beg to differ with you on plantation shudders. They can solve a multitude of problems. I used them in my street facing floor length windows. This allowed me to close the bottom half to give privacy & sun protection for my furniture. The top half could be left opened at the same time for light and view. I did the same thing in my kitchen eating area was in a street facing bay window. Then I wasn't on display while eating. I solved the same privacy problem in my new home with plantation shudders. Closing the bottom half a must do for privacy and I get light through the top half and a spectacular mountain view. I can't imagine another window treatment that would have worked in these situations.

One of the best 12 weeks courses I took at night school back in 1981 was a drapery making course where I learned how to make all types of professionally looking drapes - panels -Roman blinds etc and most import how to measure correctly for the professional custom look - that has same me so much money over the years and given me custom look for a fraction of the cost - I loved the presentation here in this video - very informative and inspiring- I've always loved well dressed windows -

@@JulieKhuu There's also the issue of how you even clean draperies and shades. It's almost like carpet versus hardwood floors (I would love the look of curtains; but, not the expense of attempting to keep them clean and fur free). If I just designed a project and then got to walk away from it and not deal with it 5, 10, 15 years down the road then the pretty would be the point. I guess though also in interior design you are working with clients that can obviously afford to redesign everything every 10 years (or less).

Very informational my early 1960s tri-level / Frank Lloyd Wright style of home has endless windows right next to each other almost floor-to-ceiling in most rooms. I have I've been going crazy trying to figure out how to do my window treatments and what type of window treatment I want. My view outside every single window is beautiful ( woodsy with a creek) I love the light and I knew I wanted cheer curtains I just wasn't sure quite how to incorporate them until now. I've decided after this video I take my time in fine the perfect panels to flank each side of my windows. It was so much important information here including and especially you remembering the good old fashioned hooks we had to slide on the back of the old heavy drapes and how to incorporate it on a more contemporary ring to slide onto a ride you didn't miss anything. Thank you so much!

Julie, your information could not have been times better! I have a beautiful extension to my house which I call the sunroom and I couldn’t figure out what type of window treatment to use but I think I’m leaning towards shades as my styling is more transitional. I’m only putting in the window treatment for privacy otherwise I would rather do without because I’m surrounded by beautiful trees. I’m still trying to figure out what to do with my patio doors as they actually occupy a whole wall! Your summary of the different treatments was concise and comprehensive, thank you.

Love your video! So much information. From a manufacturers point of view, draperies traverse and are operable with cord, wand or motorization and have some type of pleated system so they expand and fold when operated. Curtains are usually stationary panels with a rod pocket. It's probably too confusing to teach a client, but designers communicating with fabricators? Terminology is important. 😃😃 Again, thanks so much for creating this video.

This video is the best example of why you don't watch Julie Khuu. Why you don't watch Julie Khuu without a notebook and a good pen, I mean. This was chock full of information and fantastic tips and tricks. I certainly learned alot. Thankyou Julie!

Thank you for posting this video. It was very informative and I learned a lot about options especially using different treatments in combination to give yourself more light control options. That said, I paid to have the wide white heavy duty plastic blinds throughout most of my new construction home - I chose it because because of the flexibility of light control (as you stated in the video) because I have a LOT of plants that have different needs and I can angle them just right to meet those needs. It also gives me the ability to see out while still hiding us from wandering eyes of neighbors walking by on the street and from the window the neighbor has next door that looks directly into our family room. When we go on vacation, it allows us to leak some light into the room so that the plants still get light but no one can see into the space. And yes, the cleaning is a headache which is my main reason for reconsidering them. However, It was not as cheap as you apparently think it looks, and it made me feel really terrible when you said it was tacky and expressed how much you hated it. (I can imagine how the folks with plantation shutters must have felt.) I had to watch the video for school (this specific video link was assigned) so unfortunately I had to hear those comments multiple times to get all the information for my assignment. If I made this video to inform and educate, knowing I had a wide, diverse audience, I would have said something like, "Although they offer the most flexibility, I'm not a fan of blinds because they are a headache to clean. In addition I think that shades make your place look more elevated and are much easier to maintain. They come in various degrees of opacity and can be layered with curtains and drapery panels to maximize light control. Sheer curtains also give you the ability to see out and let in light while giving you some measure of privacy and can also be layered with curtains, drapery panels or roller shades."

Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment after watching my video Ayanna! I, of course wished I articulated this video in a less “hostile” manner after reading the comments. I didn’t mean to offend anyone from either camp, those with or without blinds/ shutters. It really came from a perspective of how I speak to my friends, which is what this channel is all about. Like you’re getting design advice from your besty who happens to design professionally 😉 May I also ask what school you attend? That’s awesome knowing that instructors are recommending my video as a resource, whether or not they agree with the information 😊

@@JulieKhuu Hi Julie! Thanks for responding and so gracefully. 💜 It's good to know that you took it into consideration. I know you will continue to make great videos with this in mind, especially now that you are being referred as a reliable educational resource! 🙌🏽 👏🏽 I attend Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte NC. It's a well established program. I am pursuing my Associates in Interior Design. It's a pretty hearty program, the same classes as a B.A. but without all the extra liberal arts courses which works well for me since I already have a BA. Before this I was an elementary music teacher. Thanks again for this video. This window treatment video will help me make up my mind about my own windows, I put the blinds up but then couldn't decide what I wanted to do next in terms of curtain type or hardware 😆 so I've been putting it off. I am looking forward to learning more from your videos. I will definitely watch some over this winter break. Happy Holidays!

Hi Julie. I have just discovered your channel and I am learning so much! I just moved into a new home and would love your advice on how to select sheer panels and how to layer them so beautifully as you have behind you in this video. Thank you
