How To Choose The Right Potting Medium for Your Orchid

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Orchid Potting Mix: The Right and Wrong Medium
With so many varieties of potting mixes, how do you know which one is the right one for your orchid? The main difference between orchids and your other household plants (in terms of potting medium) is that 70 % of all orchids (denominated epiphytes) aren’t planted in soil or dirt. Their potting mix is exclusive to them, and if you plant them in the dirt, they will soon present problems that will lead to their death.
What are orchids planted in? A variety of media or orchid mix can be used, like fir bark, sphagnum moss, perlite, charcoal, lava rock, osmunda fiber, coconut fiber, redwood bark, and others. To prepare your own potting mix or choose the right store-bought one is to try to imitate the exact conditions that the orchid grows in nature.
Think back a bit about orchids in their natural habitat. These exotic plants don’t grow on the ground. Their seeds nest into the bark of high trees, where they find all the right conditions to grow. These conditions are:
fixation,
humidity,
light,
temperature,
air circulation,
and adequate nutrients.

    For the giveaway mentioned in the video, just comment "I want a tracker" or anything similar to that. I'll be getting in touch with the first five to redirect you to an email address. The good thing about commenting on a brand new channel is that your chances to get Orchid Journey are pretty high. LOL. So please comment. :) As for the orchid pots that I use in this video, I buy them on Amazon. They come in a pack of 6 pots, 2 of each size, and cost around 2 US$ a pot, which is pretty good in my opinion. You can see them by clicking on this --> amzn.to/2O3XdZg It is an Affiliate Link, so If you buy it, I get a tiny commission with no extra cost to you.

    Thank you I’ve learnt so much already. I just moved to central Australia, in the house we bought I found orchids growing everywhere in pots, on trees, on rocks, in the shade, in full sun. I am know learning how to identify them and about their requirements, thanks to you. I did notice that your phalaenopsis orchids have very upright leaves mine are more droopy but it still has healthy glossy roots growing and healthy leaves, not sure why that is. 🙏🏼

    I used to use bark but I found that it simply decomposes too fast, so I swapped to coco chips instead. Works like a charm, holds a good amount of moisture and the roots have totally exploded with mine after I swapped. I also put just a tiny amount of moss on top.

    Hi again ... My go-to potting media are charcoal and a smooth aquarium pebble (looks like marble), and so far, so good - I'm sticking to it as it works for me. I make my own ventilated pots using soda bottle bottoms or clear plastic containers. I use a hot "etcher" to burn the holes. Did it on MS excel. I still have to work out the watering/fertilisation "sheet". I hope i'm successful in getting one from you. The "tea" soaker seems to be working wonders - I have keikis popping up and new roots galore!! There are subtle signs of flower spikes *fingers crossed. As usual, you are my "guiding star" whom I love to follow. Thanks!!

    I really appreciate your channel. Wish I'd found it before I used hydrogen peroxide, which was recommended highly by another channel, on my phalaenopsis orchid roots. They are so badly damaged. Idk what I should do now. They keep drying out no matter how much I water them now. I really regret using it now! I watched your video that spoke about hydrogen peroxide and what it should really be used for, and how orchid roots are not one of them. Thank you for your well researched advice!

    Hi B. Humphires, I'm so sorry to hear about your orchid. You can try several different methods just to keep the humidity high, since the roots will be compromised. One is a sphag-n-bag method, but in your case, don't use the bag. Just lay the orchid roots on top of humid sphagnum moss, so the leaves can be hydrated at all times. You can watch a video about that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZJOM18OBpaqafJs.html New roots will grow so your orchid isn't totally gone. There is hope!

    Do the roots really need light, because they don’t photosynthesy as the leaves do. Wouldn’t air circulation be more important? That just made more sense to me. Great info!

  • @Orchideria

    @Orchideria

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Frank, yes, they do need light. The roots won't photosynthesis as much h as leaves will, but they still do contribute. That's why the roots in the middle of the pot are yellow, because where no light is reaching, there is no need for chlorophyll. Air circulation is just as important or even more than light. The roots won't die if they don't have light, buy they will if they don't have air.

    Hi Patricia, Thanks you for your comment. I appreciate it. In a very dry climate, I'd use more sphagnum moss than anything else. At least up to 60% of sphagnum should work well. It does take a bit of time to adapt to the watering cycle, but sphagnum moss is what holds the water the longest.

    Hi Christine. Is your orchid a Phalaenopsis? If it is, then this media will dry out too fast (assuming you are growing it indoors). You'll need to add something in terms of orchid bark or sphagnum moss that retains a little water.

There are 2 different types of notebooks and you can pick the one that best suits your needs. Hi Amanda, Ops, I wrote the comment before watching the whole video. I have two questions; 1- Is "Clay Pebble" a good medium for my orchids? 2- How safe is the water culture for orchids (5 days in water, 2 days dry)? Thanks

  • @Orchideria

    @Orchideria

    2 жыл бұрын

    Clay pebbles or LECA will work as long as they don't compact all the space around them. There needs to be some air pockets. If you can find clay pebbles that are all the same size, that works well. Mine tend to gather a lot of residue from the fertilizer, so Ive backed away from using them. As for water culture, 5 days seems a bit long. I prefer the other way around, 5 days dry and 2 in water. But that will depend on your growing medium, temperature, humidity, and so many other things. It's best to test different methods to see what works for you.

    Hi. Amanda last year I cut down a very old olive tree since I cannot pick olives any more and couldn't look after it any more, i cut it down I put the majority in green bin how ever I kept some parts of the trunk. After listening about potting media I thought why not make my own so I decided to cut my old olive tree into small pieces small enough as a potting media for orchids but I first washed the pieces in bleach and hot hot water than dry them, now I use bottom olive tree media mixed with some smagnamoss just enough to hold some moisture on top of the pot. Just wondering for your advice if I've done the right thing, i was tired of buying orchids mix from my nursery and half of my 5kg bag was dust so thought why wast my old olive tree cuttings and make my own orchids media mix. Is this a good way or have I made a mistake doing this myself. Your thoughts is greatly appreciated. Regards from Melbourne Australia

  • @Orchideria

    Hi Mario, I'm not too familiar with olive trees but I did a little research. (So what I am about to say is others opinions and I haven't tested it myself.) If it was an older tree, then the texture would be perfect, with deep groves. A younger olive tree's bark is smoother and the roots might not attach well. The one thing I didn't find was how fast it degrades when watered weekly. If the olive bark disintegrates with constant watering, then it won't be of any value. You'll have to repot quicker than the orchid would like. If it holds up well after 2 years of weekly watering, then you should be fine.

    Hi Najia, To be honest, I'm not sure. I've heard of using coconut fibers, but I haven't tried it yet. Don't use spanish moss since it will not hold nutirents and just decay. You can try pet stores, since frogs and other reptiles use sphagnum moss. Whatever they use as a substrate is also good. Peat moss isn't recommended because it's just a dust, like dirt. I'll ask around because besides coconut fibers, I'm not sure what would be good.
