What string you are using will also determine what tension is "right" for you. A thicker soft feeling string like BG65 will be more forgiving at, lets say 27lbs then BG80 at the same tension.

So, is higher gauge like BG65 (0.70) is better to string at higher tension than smaller gauge like BG80 (0.68)?

I play for a lot of years now in the regional divisions, but I never really tried playing with a higher tension (I don't know if it's the culture here not to play with such tensions, or something else). Just last year I moved up from 23+24lbs to 24+25 lbs for my own racket, I do feel an improvement in a lot of shots, but also the feeling when I miss the sweet spot. A lot of the players in my club usually use 22-24lbs tension in their rackets.

I used to play with 26-27 lbs but after I stopped playing everyday and started playing once or twice a week, I started developing elbow pain. I assume as my skill deteriorates, I have much less accuracy and miss the sweet spot much more often. It didn't help that at the same time I also started playing golf. Now I only play with 24 -25 lbs of tension. The shuttle feels a bit "sluggish" and bounces off the racket face at a slower speed especially when I am playing at the net but not having elbow pain is a good trade off.

I live in Belgium and strung rackets for players from recreational beginner level to European sub top youth players. The lowest category of players play with plastic shuttles and will have enough at 8-8,5kg tension. The highest tension request I had over the last 5y, was 13,5kg and that is very rare. Competitive players mostly ask tensions between 10 to 12kg. So I was a bit surprised by the tensions in this video.

Was he serious? Did he let you touch his racket and feel the strings? If he's got the right technique (I assume he does being 3x champ), he's actually handicapping his power potential using just 18lbs. Sure he has easy, accessible power with low tension but the low max power. AND, he has less touch/control which is also important. How's his net game? What's his age group/category. Sounds like he's conserving energy. 18 is sooo low.

Do this guide already account for tension dropping? Tension will drop as soon as you finished stringing. There is an app that measures string tension and my tension will drop around 3 lbs after a week and pretty much settle around there until it snaps in about 1-2 months.

It's a guide for those who have no clue or dont know what tension to get. At your level of knowledge/experience, you probably dont need a guide as much and play with what suits you and what you are comfortable with. Badminton has that custom aspect to it. Towel or PU overgrip, thick or thin grip, flexy or stiff shaft, string gauge, string tension etc etc. And thats just the racket!

I think you have thought too simply here. You can't just say that the higher, the more professional. For example, I know a man who plays with about 19 pounds of tension and he plays so unpredictably and with such ease in professional badminton and not like free time playing in a park type of guy, that you can hardly keep up. It depends more on your playing technique and your own preferences than simply saying the higher the better. This is what you still could learn

Thank you for the video. I disagree that 18lbs is not for playing badminton. I used to have three ranges on my rackets. 18lb. 26lb, 30lbs. Six rackets in total. Today, I use only 18lbs and 30lbs. There is difference in feel and control between all of them. I negated 26lbs because I wanted a significant difference in feel between 18lbs and 30lbs and how fast I can adapt. It is on different racket brand and model but same weight and for the last 54 years since.
