thank you, it's a good video - I must say I'm a bit old fashioned and I still use the cup and cone style square taper - I don't think you can get much better than these because they run on 1/4" ball bearing and are beautifully smooth BUT!!! they do need to be removed, cleaned and repacked with a decent waterproof grease as often as you like - in bad weather when I'm riding a lot I do this job every month - because I do it so regularly it is super easy to remove the cups. I also use loose ball bearing 11 per side. These are far better than using a bearing race which only has 9 balls per side - maintenance is the issure with these but you will be rewarded with the smoothest possible ride on bearing designed for lateral forces - again, thank you

All good points specially for road or recreational bikes. The advantage of the external bearings is you can use a larger, stronger axle that is also lighter. Perfect combination for serious mountain biking.

I was looking at Rene Herse bottom brackets for my gravel bike that I use mostly on pavement. They are square tapered but cost a lot. The problem is that their cranksets cost even more and the one by they have is only 40. Any experience with ReneHerse? I love their tires.

Great video man, this really helped me. I have a Trek Marlin 5 with the 73 mm square-tapered bracket and am gonna make it a 1x7 with a 30T front cog. I used a gear ratio calculator online, and (compared to the 3x7) my lowest gear ratio will be 1.03 (which is equivalent to my current 1F-2R gear, which has a ratio of 1.01). Should be plenty for climbing most hills. I'm gonna miss the large gears on the road though. My highest gear ratio will only be 2.74 (or just barely higher than the current 2F-6R setting). Anyway, it should be a fun project!

If you want to use the same crankset you can buy a sealed tapered square bottom bracket for a 73mm BB. Just measure the axle and get the same length. Shimano sealed BB's usually start with BUN-xx.

I bought an iFx crankset that includes the hollotech II BB. In that case you don’t have to worry about axle length. I think the original axle was 122.5

Hallo, did you find any smoother ride after the upgrade? Mine with squared its quite smooth and i have not problem with it so i don't know if it's right to do the costly upgrade

Ralph Aimher a properly adjusted square tapered BB will be fine. I only upgraded because I often ride in grime and dirt where a sealed system will need less maintenance. I was also upgrading the crankset to 1x anyway. It really does not feel any different.

Hey Tod, couple of questions if you don't mind? What's the size of the seat post and width of the bottom bracket? Just got a rolling taff frame and it's missing some parts like seat post and derailleur hanger (I'll buy yours if you have one). Thanks in advance.

Hello all. I have a bike with a M48 Bottom Bracket. I want to upgrade my drive train to shimano xt. The xt BB is obviously smaller so I’m wondering if they make some type of thread in step down or if another option is available?

Also had a question on the crown size after changing the bottom bracket. I happen to get a 34t star, that fit ok, but noticed that star almost touched the frame. How do I fix it to put a bigger star.

The star (chainring) should fit. Make sure you have one spacer ring on that side of your bottom bracket. En PR tambien le decimos "estrella" a lo que en ingles seria "chainring"

As long as you have a hollowtech crankset to go with it, any HTech BSA BBracket will work. Just use one of the spacers on the drive side and none on the other side for a 73mm shell

Was going to try to replace the square taper bb on an old 2014 specialized hardrock, think I'll have to do more research for a specific bb? Listed as 68mm cartridge bb on website

The only other info you will need is the axle length. Just measure the old one. You can also take the BB. to your LBS.

Does swapping out a cartridge BB to an external bearing BB create a larger chainline? Would that affect a 1X drivetrain in that the rear derailleur would need to be adjusted?

It really should work without any adjustments to the derailleur since the crankset for external bearing will be designed for use with the BB taking the chainline in consideration.

definitely, as long as they are the same type. A Hollowtech II Shimano BB will fit a Race Face Hollowtech II crankset.

So is sealed bottom brackets the way forward vs just replacing the bearings as my axel is still OK not cracked broken etc

If your BB has been good and you don’t mind occasionally lubing and adjusting it, I would just replace the bearings. The sealed is basically maintenance free

@Tony’s Hobbies does a Huffy Carom 27.5” mtb have the old school bb? I guess I’ll have to order bike tools, I want to convert to a 1X crank set so do I need to change the bb?

I’m not familiar with that bike but it is most likely to have a threaded BSA bb with a tapered square crank. You can get a new tapered square crankset and use the same bb if that’s the case. Something like this would work amzn.to/3eTtn4o

@@sykes378 you cuold get a Sunrace 12 speed designed for Shimano hubs but I would recommend sticking with an 11 speed drivetrain. It is going to be a lot less expensive and will work fine. I have a video where I review the Sunrace 11-46 cassette. I have been very happy with it using a 30 tooth front ring.

Trying to restore an old bike, bracket width required is 68mm & 34mm seems to be the inner diameter where it will be inserted I've just removed the axle its square at the end and then a part of it is threaded for the nut to keep on the crank when I measure it the total length 147mm, but without the part that's threaded its 127mm, could you cive any advice for a suitable replacement

Losing my mind trying to find the bottom bracket and spindle for a 1995 Cannondale R400. I narrowed it down to a 68mm bracket but don’t know the specs for spindle and crankset.

The spindle length is determine by the crank. Most brand name cranksets specify the recommended spindle length for it

FSA is a good brand. I have their headsets on all my bikes. I haven’t tried their crankset but would imagine that they are good

If you are going to upgrade the crankset I would definitely go with a hollowtech 2. If you want to go cheap you can go with the infamous iXf that includes the BB (amzn.to/2OpmI7C). If you want to keep the stock crankset you can just buy a sealed square taper BB and it will be a big upgrade.

Not true. You can upgrade the crankset and leave everything else the same. As far as a BB you have to measure the axle length and buy a square tapered sealed one for a 73mm BB

Yes, but it has to be the BSA (English threaded) version for a 68/73 mm shell. The DUB comes in different versions.

I’m not familiar with the Trail 5’s bottom bracket but if it is a standard BSA there are many options. I would just go with something like a RaceFace Aeffect crankset and bb. No too pricey and really good quality

I think that uses a tapered square sealed bottom bracket which rarely develops play so make sure that the crank arm bolts are tight.

You can, but why? It will expose the axle to any water and grit that gets in through the seat tube or internal cable routing

Before you "upgrade" to hollowtech II, a quick search reveals the huge design flaw in some of the models, thus your upgrade is actually worse than a downgrade.

Hey Tony one more question. Now I bought a park tool CCP-22 to remove the crank from my schwinn. Man I can't even begin to tell you how difficult it was to get the crank off of that bike with that tool. The drive side arm got to the point where I could no longer pull it no matter what I did. So I lightly tapped it was a hammer a few times and finally the drive side came off. Thinking the hammer was the trick I moved over to the non drive side and boy that's when the real frustration began. I hit that tool so many times with a hammer it now looks like that tool has been in use for 20 years. I bent the spindle on the non drive side in the process thats how many times I struck that thing. Now is it just me or is the CCP-22 just flat out not the correct crank puller to be using on schwinn bikes?? Thanks for the time Tony

That’s the correct tool. The only problem with the tool is that the short handle doesn’t give you much leverage. You often have to use a cheater bar/pipe. That’s why I prefer their compact puller. It works for both types of cranks (tapered square and splined) and you can use it with a breaker bar.

@@TonyHob But we didn’t have to take them apart. They always worked. Pedals always worked. Forks broke because we were jumping ramps, but that was expected. Even our Sears Free Spirit 10 speeds were indestructible.
