it's all smiles when the BB is new, clean and shiny. Trying to remove a 20yr old Trek BB...😫😫
Thank you so much bro. You did help me a lot by explaining all the steps with clarity. I was finally able to remove my bike crankset and bottom bracket on my own without taking it to a repair shop for the first time in my life. Thank you so much once again. God Bless you.

But where to the crank tool?
Finally a good video on how to do this for the most common bikes. Thanks.
Best bottom bracket design ever. Shimano last for ages.
Clear and concise instructions...best video on bottom bracket removal on KZread!
I always find it useful to watch a video before removing the bottom bracket just to jog my memory on how to do it, especially regarding what unscrews clockwise, I don't think I'll ever remember that without checking first 😁 at least with experience things get easier. I'll always remember the first time I tried to remove the BB and how stiff the drive side was to remove, bought about 3 or 4 different tools off Amazon, ended up buying a clamp to hold the socket and ratchet in place as in my experience it can easily slip out of the BB splines when applying force.
Great and straight forward video and explanation! Also nice that you took the time explaining the need to undo the cable lead screw.

Yes really clear explanation showing ALL the steps - much appreciated. I now feel more confident giving it a go. It was all a bit of a mystery before this video. got plenty of time during Covid lockdown to take my time and hopefully finally get rid of my creaking bottom bracket.

Thanks. Find these enormously helpful
This is a great video it's a total shame park tools are so expensive for mechanics
Removing the Cable clamp grub screws!! Yaaasss. Diamond geezer. Was stumped for about 2 hours trying to get the bloody thing out, literally fell out when I removed the grub screws! Thanks!!
you are such a blessing! i keep coming back to you videos and finding what i need. thank you!
Brilliant straight forward taken your time explaining. Gonna get mine apart now. Thanks for uploading 👍😊
Clear, all steps explained, dangers explained and circumventions clearly explained Well build, the tutorial
Amazing work mate, many thanks for showing and explaining in such a simple Way ...!! :)
Nice video with invaluable tips. That's a seriously large professional tool you are using! Thank you.
Thank you for this video! I appreciate you walking through every step. I’m restoring an old bike and had no idea how to deal with a tapered square crank. There are a million hallowtech vids.
Thanks for the video, in particular the way to loosen the bracket, I didn't know whether to loosen anti clockwise or clockwise. Very clear and I wouldn't have guessed it was different depending on which side. Cheers
Great video, explained very clearly. My Carrera Subway 1 has this type of bb. My road bike and my mountain bike have Shimano Hollowtech ll which means I can now remove and install the bb’s on all three bikes! Thank you.
Excellent instructional video, as always!!! 5 thumbs up!
Thank you sir! You did an excellent tutorial now I feel confident.
Thank you, all the way from Bulgaria!
What a great tutorial 👌 Thank you so much.
Thank you! Best video for removing bottom bracket
Excellent clear informative. Gonna have a go myself. Many thanks
Brilliant! Very clear - just wish I'd watched this before attempting it. Now at least I know where I was going wrong and can hopefully put it right...
Thanks great video totally explains why my crank arms won't come off the way I was trying it.
Very helpful, thank you!
Nice one. That's been a great help. Got the bearing out now and awaiting the new one. 👍
great video and excellent for the bicycle training class and people like me never repair bicycles.
Good tip; If you accidently strip your threads. Use a bearing/gear pulley, probably the best alternative method of removing stubborn square taper cranks!

It also helps to have a high quality puller tool. I tried to remove mine with a low quality one that came with a tool kit and half the threads on the puller and crank ended up being stripped. Tried the gear puller and couldn't get enough force. Luckily a higher quality puller was able to engage the remaining threads. My crank was on there so tightly that I had to use a hammer on my wrench to get it to turn. The amount of force with the mechanical advantage on the screw must have been ridiculous. I'd been hit by a car on my crank several years before and it must have forced the crank up the taper much harder than it should have been. Sometimes you can get buy with cheap tools, but this is one tool where using a cheap one can cause permanent damage and a major headache, so I highly recommend the few dollars extra for one made with better harder steel.
Lovely. Got the threads side mixed. This video was very helpful.
Great video and explanation. Thanks for the help, managed to do it!
Thanks for the clear instructions very useful
great video! thanks!
Great video. Very helpful so I understand how it works and to successfully replace the bottom bracket. Now to hope I didn't damage my crankset when I decided a mallet was the proper tool.
What a fantastic delivery
Thank you so much for the video. For a difficult to remove crank, I strapped the crank arn to the frame's down tube for leverage.
Great clear video thanks. Will help me to replace mine in future
Very good video. I didn't know that the drive side and non-drive side come off in different rotational directions. Like pedals. Thanks!
Great, thanks. Good presentation
Great video,. Your vids have come in help before so thank you!! 🤘🏻😎
Excellent video. Thanks .
noice video so helpful, thank you!
Excellent Sir, thank you.
Great video, thanks.
Excellent thanks
You Sir Are A Fecking Legend Hero Top Man Thank You 😊 🚴♀️
Great video thank you
thx for vid mate great explanation
Thank you good information
Best accent ever
Really helpful for me
Thanks, and here is a helpful hint - some crank puller tools come with a size adapter for different crank types, you need to be certain whether you need to use it in your application otherwise threads can get stripped! (don't ask how I know! ☹)
Thank you!
That was perfect !
Very informative thank you for taking the time explaining in a step by step guide 👍
Thanks mate !
Thanks for the “Drive side” clue, “Left hand thread”. Clockwise to undo!
thanks, im going to over haul the bbs on my wife`s and mine cruiser hardtail bikes. they came with cheap square taper bb components, and its best to upgrade sooner than later, before everything gets frozen
That's great, thanks mate. I wasn't sure which side was clockwise/anti-clockwise. BTW, I think your cat wants (or wanted) feeding near the end of the vid! 😄🐈⬛
Thanks!
Thanks a lot, mine came off without a hitch due to your video.
Cheers mate 👍
Thanks! 👍
Thanks Vedio
Good video. I'm used to older bikes, so this was handy for checking the procedure on more modern (post 1970!) bottom brackets.
thank you for contributing despite your disability. You go bud!
Found this very helpful, my bike is making what I can only describe as a “clunk” noise coming from my left side that only happens when I put power into it when going up hill, I’ve swapped out my pedals and regreased my crank bolts, noise is still there, I’m thinking something might be loose with my bottom bracket, but when I pull and push on my cranks, there is no wriggle or give, so it’s not obviously loose. Think it’s new bottom bracket time?

Thanks for the video. It looks like I have one of these. My square taper bar is loose. It "wiggles" a lot. Is there a way to tighten it, or do you just replace the whole thing?
@FreeToCycle

They are a sealed unit! you just replace the whole thing.
Nice
great video im guessing diff bikes require diff tools to get that initial cap off?
In one cheapo kids bike i was parting out the extractor ripped the threads from the sprocket side crank. I wasn't even using much torque on it. I don't know what crappy alloy it was but it just gave out. Well i paid pennies for the entire bike and still got the frame parts i wanted for my project so not that big of a loss.
just picked up a USED 1994 Parkpre mtb : AL-U MAX Plastic Piece Broke off - BUT on the DRIVE SIDE !!!!! and the STEEL is on the NON DRIVE SIDE !!!!!!!!! i Think the Bloke INSTALLED it in REVERSE CROSSED THREADED the NON DRIVE SIDE WILL TRY HEAT Tommorow
Great video. I believe my bike needs a 68-120mm bottom bracket. If I get a 68-122.5mm would it be a problem?
Awesome! And a fellow Bristolian?
do you have a video on how to fix wonky bottom bracket, especially square tapered one? thanks
Cheers Lee, really clear instructions. Are those 'specilised tools' (for pullling the crank arms off, and removing the cartridge) easily available? Also are the square tapered cartiridges available as spares, or are they outdated tech?
Hi hoping you can help I have whats looks like much and such the same set up except the pedals fit via multi spline (seems rare as cant find a video on exact set up all be it it is still shimano)should the bottom bracket nuts still be the same principle? got the non drive side off and it was like your one plastic but the drive side ones very very tight tried it both ways can you possibly confirm from what i said if it should be anti clockwise (turn right to slacken) like your one here? (presuming you can picture the exact bottom bracket/pedal fitment set up I am talking about) ?
Great Video! Thx! --What is your favorive B/B?
Any chance of a list of tools required?

So I just got back from the bike shop and asked the same question. -8mm Hex tool -crank puller -bottom bracket remover There may be some variance in tool size depending on your bikes specs. 🤷🏻♂️ But for a standard square tapered BB, these are all the tools you need. Plus some bike grease. Hope this helps.

Hi...is it possible to put an old cotter pin style bearing and cup into that bottom bracket where you just removed the cartridge? Ty
I have a Carrera Kraken that I can't untied the bottom bracket... Any advice?
Great video , could anyone point me in the right direction for a kit with those tools in ? ( the crank puller with handle and the large ' splined ' socket ? ) Thanks
I have a altus 94/95 on there but ive noticed a clank sound coming from the bottom bracket, im ok taking all apart and have tools, but im thinking should i get a deore xt bottom bracket to replace it and if i do will i still be able to run my altus chainset untill i can upgrade fully to a XT chainset? Or if the bottom bracket turns out to be ok could i just put a XT streight on there?
Does the inside of the crank seat up against the chain stabilizer collar on the Shimano un300 BB?
Could you fit a hollow tech 2 bottom bracket to replace the square taper?

Free To Cycle Great. That’s my plan. Thanks for the great videos.
Hi, help please, I have Ultegra R8000 group set on my 2019 Giant TCR pro1, I have noted that the cranks are slight stiff to turn, when I loosen slightly the adjustment cap there will spin freely, if I reset pre load as per Shimano fitting instructions they are back to being slightly stiff to turn. Your thoughts would be very much appreciated Thanks
@FreeToCycle

Gavin, the plastic nut on the non drive side is only supposed to be tightened to between 0.7 - 1.5nm so basically just nipped up, the two hex bolts on the crank arm are then tightened to hold the arm in place. If you over tighten the plastic nut it will cause load on the bearings and they will feel tight to turn by hand. Hope that helps!!
@gavinneale6651

Thanks for your prompt response, I will readjust as you suggested, I checked both bearings and they are silky smooth so the issue must be the preload, many thanks
Pleased to have found this, didn't realise the drive side came out clockwise but in any case, my bottom bracket is not budging, not even with my impact gun (although it is an electric one so may just be shite).
How to remove crank arm after removing the nut? I was thinking to hammer it off ?is this bad idea?
Can you rebuild these? I have a bent spindle on mine and i'd rather fix it than put a whole new cartridge in it.
@bikerepairs8867

Bent spindle would be better if your replace it
Cheers mate, only wish I watched your video before I started the job,CLOCKWISE ON THE ⛓️ SIDE! OPPS!! @%£*^#@
In your opinion, is the plastic cup detrimental to the longevity of the BB? I find it bizarre that plastic is used, considering the forces it's under whilst powering up a steep hill for example.
@FreeToCycle

Never had any issues with the plastic cup effecting the longevity of any square taper BB.

Ok, thanks for the reply. I was just curious. Guess it makes some kind of sense really as it's never going to sieze in the frame over time.
Does it matter which crank puller? I never took mine off & turned it as tight as itll go but it wont come off
So how do they wear out if they're sealed ,do the bearings still wear out I suppose ?
One thing he didn't point out is that you need to use the right crank puller because there are two sizes. The inner piece needs to fit inside the square hole of the crank to push against the square rod of the bottom bracket.
Can I have links to these products?
Aren,t you lucky your crank arms came off like nothing, i have a 14mm nut holding mine on, right side came off pretty good but left side i,m turning clockwise to undo and hammering like crazy and somethings ready to break, any ideas anybody please.
When I tighten my bottom bracket the spindle cannot move, what could be the problem?.
Thanks, I can never remember which way these things unscrew, one tip though, use the crank bolt and an appropriately sized washer to press the bb removal tool into the splines and hold it in place while unscrewing, especially if using a 32mm spanner .
