How to Choose a Badminton Racket - The Ultimate Guide

-------------------------
What's the best badminton racket? Trying to narrow it down from the top 10 badminton rackets? This video will explain how to pick a racket that is best suited for you.
-
Additional Factors:
You might have noticed that there are other racket specs that I haven’t mentioned.
That’s because frankly, they aren’t as important so it isn’t worth spending much time thinking about. But to be thorough, I’ll run through them quickly.
Grip size. Sizes range from G1 to G6 where 1 is the thickest. Choosing a grip is just a matter of what fits your hand. Most rackets are gripped G3 or G4, which are fine for most. If in doubt, go for a thinner grip as you can easily add an overgrip.
Material. You should look for a racket made of graphite. But pretty much all rackets these days are.
Brand. It doesn’t matter which company you choose to buy a racket from as long as they’re fairly reputable. There’s plenty to choose from, but don’t overthink it.
Racket “technologies”. Mostly marketing hype, and shouldn’t impact your decision making process too much.

I finally gave in and made a video on it. I never did it before because WAY too many players spend too much time thinking about what racket to buy - when in reality improving your skill as a badminton player is always going to be much more important than any racket decision. But since it keeps getting asked and you do need to choose a racket at some point, I decided to make this guide. Use the information to make an informed decision, but do it quickly. It's a total waste of time to spend hours deliberating over what the ideal racket is, when you could be using that time to train instead.

This info is important so players don't go buying completely off spec rackets for their level or use cases. For instance buying 5u and 6u rackets when you don't need a light weight racket or buying an extremely head heavy racket as a beginner and causing injury. If most beginner and intermediate players bought mid flex even balance 3u and 4u rackets there would be no issues but that's not always the case.

How about length of the racket?

  • @tars3249

    @tars3249

    4 жыл бұрын

@@eufronioo The difference between most rackets is around 10mm, maybe 15mm between different brands. Usually in the shaft or if the head frame shape is elongated. Longer rackets may offer a bit more flex at the same stiffness levels so might offer slightly more power compared to slightly more control/accuracy of shorter rackets. But the difference is probably 1-2%.

I would say weight 84g to 86g and stiff rackets are better. I went to a lot factories in China, plus was associated with a brand called, x-trm for 7 years. So tested a lot of rackets, I was also the test player for wilson rackets. Not easy to find that perfect racket, but good video to break it down.

Excellent video. Only a few things not covered that are also important would be the grip size (g5, g4 etc) and head design (Aero or box frame, Iso or oval, full size or compact). But I understand that grip size can usually be chosen after you have a specific racket in mind and the head design is a more advanced choice and secondary to the balance flex and weight of a racket.

As a new badminton player, I find this information very important. I was, at one point, going crazy over the racket specs in order to ‘improve’ my game and I came across a video on KZread that said exactly what you say: concentrate on putting the shuttle where there is a hole on the other side of the net. Since then, my game has improved a lot. Having said that, I think that shoes are very important, as I have suffered from feet and lower leg injuries. And I find that not much information is out there. I am on my 3rd (soon 4th) pair of shoes in 1,5 years of playing. And only now am I understanding what I am looking for. There are some videos on what the best shoes are, but mostly from a marketing standpoint, not from a user standpoint. Thank you very much for a very informative channel.

Awesome video!!! I was wondering about the disadvantage of having a more flexiable racket for a player, stiff racket generates more power for a stronger player, less for a weaker player. A flexiable racket can help a weaker player generate more power, what does a flexiable shaft do for a stronger player? Do you do stringing videos I want to learn more about stringing rackets!! • @JLneonhug

Great vid! Few things I'd add though; - 5u is viable too, China XD female players use/d it, to be honest if they can generate 150-170+mph shots with it I think majority of us can be 'fine' with 5u. - Other negative points on stiffness is that you need to be more precise on hitting the shuttle at pace, with a flexible racket it's much much more forgiving to hit the sweet spot and generate power. This is across all skill levels. (eg try carlton vte and tell me if you can survive the hand cannon for 2 hrs) - Interchangeable features- ie a head heavy-light racket can feel very similar to even balance-heavy racket. - Aero plays a huge part on the timing of the racket and how a racket 'feels'. Eg z-slash is crazy fast frame. I am actually local to you :D give me a shout if you play at SSP (or other local clubs) sometime.

@@JLneonhug interesting info! After how long do you need to replace your strings even if they are barely used? I bought a high-end 5U 70g "Blacklight Photon XL" raquet around 2012 but then I stopped playing for like 8 years. I just replaced my grip as it was all dried out, and while my string appears to be good as it is definitely not worn out, I don't know about its tension though. How can I get it verified?

Hey Dude, Thanks for such a great video. As per the video I need to go with head heavy rackets since my game is inclined towards attacking. But the problem is there are more number of rackets with head heavy and again there is a confusion in choosing one. I have given then details of my game below, please suggest me the best racket. Thank you in advance Below are the details which you have asked for, requesting you to go through it and suggest the best racket for me : 1. Playing for 5+ years with breaks in between and using carbonex 8000 plus since then 2. Intermediate to Advance level 3. I would rate my smash skills - 8/10, Drop - 7/10, service - 9/10, Smash returns- 7/10, BackHand clear - 5/10 and movement(footwork) - 6/10 4. Shuttle I use is Mavis 350 5. My game is always an attacking game and I am good at hitting from back court. I wasn't aware that racket plays a important role in a game until once when played with my friends Muscle Power 29 light. I noticed my shots were really powerful with Muscle Power when compared to the my carbonex 8000 light. At that point I realized that I badly need to change my racket. Confused selecting between below rackets and reasons for that : 1. Muscle Power 29 light - since I played with my friend's racket and felt it was good 2. Astrox 5fx 3. Astrox 38D 4. Astrox FB 5. Astrox smash I hope you can now help me in selecting one from the above. Also open for suggestions. Preferably Yonex since I am emotionally attached with the brand. Kindly requesting you to give the reason for your selection as well
