How to Check Your Windows For Leaks
Did you know that with a simple garden hose and an average moisture meter, you too can determine if you have a leaking window!? You heard correctly…
The idea of this process is to apply enough water to the exterior of the window in order to see if water finds its way inside. Unless the leak is major, it is unlikely that you will see visible water on the inside - although, I have found water collecting on a window sill or coming out from beneath a baseboard in the past.
Using just about any moisture meter (which you can purchase from any major hardware store or online), you can scan or probe the walls and baseboard on the interior. It is often best to water test a window on one day and then collect moisture readings the following day. This will allow for the building materials to absorb any moisture that intrudes - ultimately resulting in higher moisture content within these areas when checking with a moisture meter.

No water intrusion at this property, fortunately. I’ve got a video follow-up, for anyone wanting to know how to scan/check for moisture on the interior walls. Should be online within the next day or two.

In this case, there was no water intrusion coming from these windows. In other situations, where we find water getting inside, it’s often re-caulking of the windows, filling screw holes with a sealant, unclogging window drains, etc.

Long hose? 😂. In all seriousness, you can look for a stream style hose nozzle. I had success with powerful streams reaching at least a 3rd floor window. You can always setup a 6+ foot A-frame ladder, to give you a little more height off of the ground.
