If it is a stored data somewhere in the car for sure there is a way to change it. Maybe you get better luck going to a VW dealership with the vin number and pay some small cash getting a service history. There the mileage is logged usually with every service event and also you get clear info about what was repaired before on the car.

And the service reminder can be reset from within the car, I know you can do that on the touareg but I'm not sure about other VAG cars though.

You must be very naive to think that the ecu can't be reprogrammed....

ECU and Instrument Cluster can be reprogrammed. So there is still a big chance, that the mileage on both devices was tampered. And for this check you can use a laptop with VCDS software and OBD2 VCDS cable (the good quality clone works also).

It's stored other places as well, not just in the IC and ECU. And dealerships and workshops note the mileage on each visit. National mandatory safety inspections store the mileage as well, and should be available for consumers.

Haha, the hypocrisy being shown here is palpable. He's routinely hawking these scantools, always pointing out mileage-changing feature, now does a u-turn to hawking the same tools to detect said mileage change, but with a twist - the "30 Second Check" will cost you upwards of a grand to realise! :P

This is a great video, thank you. Will the XTool D7 or D8 do exactly the same as this tool? Do they also read from ECU and not just the odometer like your tool does? I'm happy to buy from you and this tool but I've just heard heaps of good things about XTool products.

Milage is stored in ECU , dashboard, body , key , and everything you can change, however , you can't change milage for last DPF regeneration, or the number of DPF regenerations , so that could be a good indicator of what is real milage.

If you do a DPF reset, usually that clears those mileages, plus if a DPF delete was done on the car, its possible to hard code them to 0 via WinOLS.

Can it also be used to force a DPF regeneration?

Activated engineering mode, can show on dashboard the true mileage, without the help of any tool. Most of cars store electric errors along with mileage. If ECU is not modified, then the numbers are true, at the time error was stored.

No MOT for the first 3 years, I know a bloke that always sold cars after the first MOT with very low mileages 20-30k, all were over 120k

@@Buzdu22 true but almost all cars are serviced at main dealer during that time due to maintaining the warranty period. I'd imagine an easy check with the dealer would be able to get mileages at time of services.

@@tomiskalmar then given most services need to be done by 10k/20k that's the most it could be out by..of course they could do that for each of the 3 years/services prior to MOT, but it's at least another check. Plus many people wish to maintain their car so will take it for a service. If they don't they also don't want to lose warranty. If they end up broken down on the side of the road and try to claim warranty they'd have to get a guy out to clock it prior to it going to the dealer and all before the yearly service interval. I think as a buyer you can generally tell if something's off if you do your homework.

@@ln5747 As I read more about the mileage manipulation it would seem to be obvious they would do it before each year's service and MOT unfortunately. I just came across with a 2015 Skoda Superb yesterday at a Skoda dealer: 14k miles and 3 owners. There is absolutely no way that a 7-8 year old car with 3 owners only done 14k miles. Who do hell buys such car and never drives it?

Pointless wasting your money to buy said machine. Its just a scan tool. If the mileage has been tampered with, it would be through the ecu, so both figures will be matching.

This is wrong , in a sense that it can be tampered with , bit harder yes but still can be wrong . Those ECUs can be completely deleted and software reinstalled , and then you are out of luck , of course this is illegal , and you need help from Manufacturer , some keys and stuff to do it , and Germany gladly provides it , while making it illegal for their market . The reason why they do it , is to help used car exports , they do other stuff to help hide the true nature of the car . How you can see the real mileage is by inspecting the car , you cant fool serious mechanic , you really cant , they have ways . And when i drove my soon to be Audi Q5 to my mechanic , he red this data , and it said 200 000km , then he went to check Catalytic converter , and by the number of cycles it did you can judge the real mileage , and it did 400 000km , based on the state of parts on it , not the ECU . This is how i know it can be wrong , how did my mechanic do it , that i dont know , but he did and mileage was double

I check mot history since beginning and see possible mileage per year someone can drive. If too low or too high, something is not right.
