HOW TO: Change Valve Springs on LS Using TDC Method

This video shows how to put each cylinder at top dead center on any LS based motor in order to change the valve springs while the heads are still on the car. I have a separate video that actually shows me doing this on my 2010 Camaro SS.

Quick Update: This video is a simple way to replace valve springs on heads when the heads are still on the motor without using compressed air in the cylinders or stuffing things in the spark plug holes to keep valves up. However, I learned from a fellow viewer that my description of which piston is firing is backwards. For example, when the Dot on the cam sprocket is at 6 o'clock, the 6 piston is the one that just fired, not 1. I verified this looking at several old LS Cams I have laying around the garage too. Thanks Micah for pointing this out!

Hi Jeff. Thank you for the video. My question is, why does one need compressed air if the pistons are TDC? Where can the valves go? Thank you for your time. I am working on the valve seals on my 5.3.

@@tinbus149 You are correct that you don't need compressed air when using the TDC method. I only use air if I am not using the TDC method. You can see me using the TDC method on my cam swap video as well. Putting the pistons at TDC is an alternative to using compressed air or any other method to keep the valves from dropping. I've used both methods (compressed air and TDC) and I prefer TDC method since there is no physical way to drop a valve once the keepers are removed. There is still a slight risk of dropping a valve using compressed air since you may inadvertently push the valve past the seat letting the air out (although that has never happened to me).

@@JeffLyle Thank you Jeff. I was so fearful of losing a valve I was using TDC and compressed air. However, as soon as I plug in the air compressor I can hear all of the air exiting through the exhaust so it isn't working anyway. I would love to know what I am doing wrong. Either way I am using TDC. It is still taking me a while.

@@tinbus149 you should consider doing a compression test if you can hear air exiting the exhaust when the valves are closed. Unless you are pumping 300+lb of air in there, it shouldn't leak out fast enough to hear it. And if there is low compression that isn't rings related, then you may need to clean some carbon or redo the valve seats. Or maybe you have a bent exhaust valve.

@@JeffLyle I watched your video to understand if I installed my new cam properly. There is no dot on my crank sprocket, so I turned it over until TDC was reached, then spun the cam until the dowel was at 3 and the dot at 6. Something perplexes me though with my sprocket placement. When piston 1 fires, the cam dot is at noon, not 6. When the dot is at 6, piston 1 is TDC on the exhaust stroke. Is this just differences in cams or am I an idiot... Perhaps both ;)

@@micahkelly2620 You know what... I think you might be right. I just grabbed an old cam in the garage and looked at the lobes. It looks like when the dowel is at 3 the intake valve on 1 is just about to open meaning 1 just finished the exhaust stroke. I think this means I just labeled the wrong piston as the firing piston in my chart. You aren't the idiot... I am lol :) Either way, for anyone watching, the main importance of the video is to determine which pistons are up and ready to change the valve springs. I'll go back and add a sticky to correct this. Thanks for pointing this out Micah!

you only need to line the dots up when installing the timing gear and chain. Once you are done putting the cam gear and chain back on, you should spin the motor over by hand several times just to make sure nothing hits (no PTV clearance issues). When changing valve springs with the heads on the motor, it is easiest to see where the pistons are with the timing cover off. Otherwise if the timng cover is on, I prefer using compressed air to hold the valves up.

onewheelup sounds like the old cam is still in it and you are staring at that giant cam phaser in front of the cam gear. Once you remove the cam bolt, the chain and the gear, you’ll be able to see the dot on the crank. As long as it is at 12 the you can put your new cam in with the new cam gear with the dot at 6. Then you can start changing out valve springs using the method I described. Promise you can see the dots if you look hard enough with a bright flashlight.

Technically you an use this method to change the valve springs with or without the cam installed. The key is knowing where the pistons are in the cylinder in order to hold the valves up when you remove the old springs. If the cam, timing gear, and chain are installed, the cam will rotate when the crank is rotated. If the cam is installed but the gear and chain are not on yet, you do NOT need to rotate the cam while changing the springs. If I didn't answer your question, let me know.
