After you fill it, just trim up the motor before removing the oil filler and reinserting the plug. Lot less spill. 👍

Your outboards are fabulously shiny and clean! My engines spines look nothing like being all covered in brown prop lube, etc. What is your cleaning method? What products do you use for cleaning? Great video!

We trailer our boat (not kept in a slip), and I wipe the boat/drive down with 'Boat Bling Hot Sauce' after every outing. As for the splines, nothing special there. As that is how they looked when I pulled the props off. The drive is also only 2 years old in this video.

Great videos, well done and informative without mindless dead video! Would you happen to know the bolt sizes for those 3 cover bolts? Mine got lost by the guy did this last time for me.

Thanks for the compliment. I try and stick to the point and address questions I feel folks may have without getting too long winded. What 3 cover bolts are you asking about? My drive cover has 5? Did you mean 5, or am I thinking about the wrong bolts?

Hey, thanks for the video. I was able to follow it to a T. One question, after you changed the trim fluid. Did you reset any sensor's that monitor the gear oil, for when it needs to be changed? I read something in the manual that your suppose to reset it, but I did see mention anything in your tutorial, so thought I'd ask. Great tutorial btw!

Good question! I believe only the OceanX type drives have the sensor which needs to be reset. Not required for my drive type. My manual does contain the OceanX reset procedure within it, as I believe it is a 'standard' manual. If you do have that drive type, you will need to reset the sensor. It looks to be real simple. When I have a minute, I'll also go back into the video and add a caption/comment in description for those who do have an OceanX drive. Thx for the comment!

Thanks for this. I'm going to be doing mine come spring 2023. I previously had a marina service these items for me, but will now I'm in a new area, so I will be taking on these duties, perhaps until I establish a new relationship with the local boat shop. Have you changed out hydraulic fluids for the trim?

No I have not changed the fluid for the trim cylinders. That activity is not called out in the Service Protocol list for my outdrive. So I assume it is not a general maintenance item and does not need to be changed. Unless of course you have a leak and it has become contaminated, but then there would be more to do than just change the fluid!

Great video with part numbers. Very helpful. What brand pump for the quart bottle do you have? The adapter for the Volvo fill hole seems to be a little different than other out drives.

Just saw your comment so went and looked at the pump. No markings on it…. I bought it several years ago for use on a Mercury outboard. It fit both the outboard and my stern drive, so I assume the size I stated in the video is pretty common?

I change it at the end of every season as part of winterization - just in case if there was water intrusion into the drive over the season, it will not separate to the bottom and freeze/crack the case. Also - per my drive's service protocol, it is supposed to be changed every 100 hours or every 24 months. Whichever occurs first.

​@@iowabuckeye I agree. However, since I don't own a trailer at LOTO, it's about a 20 mile run from my dealer to my dock. All in all, it will have an hour or so from that run, so I've only been doing outdrive 24/100. I had them pull the outdrive first year to check all the clearances and bearings to see if it was done well at the factory (COVID build). There have been a couple recalls, but all in all, a pretty solid set up and the 350 will bring our RS6 Regal on plane in an easy 3 seconds. We're around the 8mm on the quiet side of the Osage. If you make it to LOTO, I would be happy to buy the beer for the great video.

Thanks for the offer! We have stayed at the 8 a few times, in the back of the quiet cove that wraps around to the right behind Alhonna. This past July we stayed at the 40mm as our Regal 2300 handles that part of the lake a bit better..... Although one day we did make the run to Jolly Rogers for the breakfast buffet!!

@@iowabuckeye We're directly across the channel between the single island in front of Buck Creek Cove and the twin islands. Just tack a reply onto this thread if you get in the area and it will ping me. Jolly Rogers Breakfast is worth the run from the 40. Another nice run is to the last cove on the Grand Glaze - called Flower Pot Cove - amazing flowers and the Glaze is always a pretty run. See lots of eagles there too. There's a lot of cool stuff from the 35mm down too - if you get past the 60mm, use your GPS to stay on the channel.

Using terms like Part Number, consumables, chamfered…using a breaker bar to break torque. I swear you must be a military mechanic, but the lack of a reflective belt tells me you’re just a good wrench. 😂

Thank you for the great video, very helpful. By chance do you know how to reset the maintenance reminder on the dash? My manual says to remove the cover on the lower unit and unplug a sensor, while working the ignition. But there's no sensor to unplug on mine; I have the DPS-B unit.

No I’m sorry I can not help with your question. My drive does not have a maintenance reminder, and this is the first I have heard of such a thing for an outdrive gear oil change.

@@iowabuckeye sorry, it's not a reminder for the outdrive oil. It's the reminder for the regular maintenance, and the reset procedure involves a plug on the outdrive. It's in my manual, which is correct for my 2014 246, but there is no such plug on my outdrive.

So just to confirm the beveled edge should actually be facing inwards? Thanks great video!

The service protocol for my drive calls for it to be changed every 100 hours or every 24 months, whichever occurs first. Personally, since I live where the winters are very cold, I change it at the end of the boating season just in case water has entered the drive over summer. As if there is water in the drive, it will separate to the bottom of the drive and crack it when it freezes. An average boating season for me is 30 to 40 hours. Thx for watching.

Do you do this every 100 hours or…? Also, is it possible to reinstall props w/o a torque wrench it is that just a really bad idea? Looked like outside prop went on tighter than the front one. Thanks, great video.

For my drive the service protocol states every 100 hours or every 24 months, whichever comes first. Many will do it every year as if you do have water intrusion into your drive, it is best to find out about it sooner than later. I plan to change it every year as part of my overall winterization process as I am in Iowa (winter gets real cold....). As if there is water in the drive, it will separate to the bottom and will possibly freeze/crack the drive housing. As for installing the props without a torque wrench, I can not confidently comment on that. It for sure can be done, but I am not sure just how important the torque specs are for the props. Thx

By drive screws I assume you mean the prop nuts? If so, the one for the forward prop is 45 ft/pounds (converts to 61 Nm) and the rear prop nut is 75 ft/pounds (converts to 102 Nm). I do mention the torque specs within the video as I am installing the nuts.

Great video, does your front prop (closet to the bow) have any forward backward play in it after tightened to spec? Mine has about a 3/16" play, wondering if thats normal.

Our boat is stored elsewhere for winter so I can’t head to the garage and check for you. But honestly I don’t think it has any forward/backward play. I’ll probably check on the boat next month and can take a look then.

I checked on the boat today and there is no front to rear play with either prop. Hopefully you figured it out, but if not, I would assume maybe something was caught in your threads or the torque wrench was not operating properly.

Is your drive a DPS-D1? If so there is no spacer. I do believe some other drive types may have spacers/washers, but I assume you would have seen them with disassembly? Good luck. Please let me know what you figure out!

Do you have a part number for the pump? I bought one and tried this today and realized the threads are different. Super frustrating! All of them on Amazon state not compatible with Volvo. Great video - Thank you!

Sorry I do not have a part number, as the pump I have does not have a number on it. It is actually one I had used the year prior with an old Mercury outboard (you can see the old Mercury green gear oil in the tube when I was going over part numbers), so I wouldn't assume there would be Volvo specific 3/8 - 16 threaded UNC fittings? Did the one you purchased state it was 3/8-16? I assume your local Walmart (or other big-box) may have the pumps if you would rather not try ordering again. And I did do a quick search and see what you are talking about as I did find one that says it won't work with VP. Very odd in my mind as a fitting should be a fitting?

What pump did you use. I tried this last season and was able to do everything but pump in the oil because the nozzle at the end wasn’t long enough to screw it.

Did you try the pump I have linked in the video’s description? It is just a cheap plastic one, but has worked for me. Is your drive the same type as mine?

Good Job. I have a 2005 Volvo Penta 4.3 and every time I change my gear oil, after I put in the correct amount oil, the dip stick still shows half full like yours did in the video. Is that normal? I've even tried adding from the dip stick hole afterwards but fear I will over fill it and I can never get it to be at the top of the line on the stick. I just checked mine again yesterday (first time this year) and it was half way. I've not change this year yet either so does the stick have to be screwed all the way in before the reading is correct? Or do you loosen it, wipe it, but it back but not screwed in and then check the level? I've checked mine both ways and I'm still confused how you know how much is still needed or if half way is enough.

You are fine if it is anywhere on the flat part of the dipstick, but suggest aiming for at least the middle. And measure with it screwed in.

I’m not 100% sure, but assume the procedures should be real close. Their designs should be very similar. What year is your drive? We are from Marion, and do most of our boating at Coralville.

It is a 2021. Doubt they will change anything for 2023, but your dealer should provide you the owners/maintenance manual for both the engine and outdrive when you pick up the boat. That is where I got the information to change the gear oil, but the drive did have a few minor differences from the manual (bolt vs. flathead for the drain plug, and no O-ring on dipstick). It's actually an easy process, but the drive oil does have quite the odor. So probably best to do outside, unless you like to hear the wife complain..... Thx for watching.

For the nut the manual says 50lb and wing nut 45 can you tell me where did you get the 75lb just curious because doing mine today thx

45 ft. lb. for the inner nut and 75 ft. lb. for the outer nut come directly from the 'Service and Maintenance' manual for my drive type. I have a DPS-D1 drive. Is your drive the same? If not, it may have a different torque requirement. The VP part number for the manual I have is 47708014 06-2017 (on page 52). My drive is a 2021.

What happens if the perpellers don't spin freely after torque into specs

Make sure you shifter is in neutral and not in gear.

Not sure on this drive, but the shaft splines dont look right? Typically they are straight, typically when you seen them look like this it means something hard was hit to cause that. But-like I said, maybe this drive is built that way?

Yes, this is how the splines on this drive and props are designed. And I can't even image a drive shaft 'twisting' without first just shearing/breaking. Let alone not even damaging the props. Thx for watching!

If you go to the Volvo Penta website and search around you can find what is available. If you have your engine and drive’s serial number, you can enter them and available documentation will be shown. Some is ‘free’, and some will need to be ordered. When I bought my boat it did come what the general service and maintenance manual. I have since purchased the shop manual for my drive.

Couldn’t you have just put the drain plug back in, and filled it though the vent plug ?

It is filled from the bottom to avoid air pockets, which you will get when filling from the top. In short, you won’t get it ‘full’ and risk damage to the drive.

I had thought the same thing so poured it into a jar and let it sit for 2 weeks. There was no water separation, so assume that is how it looks after some wear.

@eagle5720 What part number VP lube are you using? I know the Mercury gear lube is blue/green. What I use is more of an amber/clear as can be seen in the video.

If you look at the first few seconds of the video, you will see blue/green lube in the pump's tube. As the last time I had used the pump was on a Mercury outboard and it was still in the tube. I did clear/pump that out before I started filling my drive.
