How To Change Strings On An Acoustic Guitar (ES-111)

In this guitar lesson I'll show you how to change strings on an acoustic guitar. I recommend you buy a winder / string cutter thingy as it certainly speeds things up. For this lesson I'm using D'Addario EXP19 strings, coated Phosphor Bronze.

Thanks from me too. I managed and made no mistake. That was a big surprise for me. And that shows that you instruction video was easy to understand and just perfect. I had bought that black to string a guitar thing some years ago. All guitar owners must have such a thing. It makes it so much more easy to change strings with that thing.

I remember there's an older version of this video on this channel. I used that video as a reference when I first tried to change strings as a beginner. That was three years ago. Now that I look back on my journey, I think of the numerous hours I've spent on this channel and on Justin's website. Thank you Justin for your great lessons. The world is a better place with you in it.

Several things to reinforce what Justin's said here, if you do not stretch the strings straight away, you will fight tuning issues for DAYS. One additional tool besides the winder/cutter would be a device called a String Stretcha. It is a stick with a hook and heel that simulates what Justin showed you but it puts the leverage perfectly on each string and when you run it up and down, it really does a great job. Watch a video about it and you'll see what it does. Also, cutting off the old strings over the fret board instead of the body will keep the strings for scratching up your beautiful finish. One final thought, when all the old strings are off, check the nuts on each tuner head. They will almost always need snugged up when you change strings.

Excellent tutorial! Caution: Be careful with the pins if you are replacing them on an older guitar with very old looking strings. I just changed strings on a 1970's Epiphone. I broke two of the pins trying to get them out with pliers. This was my 1st go at changing strings on an acoustic. Lesson learned.

It's worth a mention that when tuning the guitar, always tune up, as in, don't loosen the string to get it in pitch. If it is a little sharp, take it down past the pitch and bring it up to pitch. The string will hold its tuning better.
