Great Video. I just finished the job. My filter is 30 years old and I am pretty sure the sand had never been replaced, we have owned the pool for 21 years. The bottom half below the laterals was like concrete. My first indication that this was the case was last winter when I drained the filter, the water flow was very slow..... It was a turd to dig the old sand out as it was so hard, vacuumed the first half down to the laterals, removed them, then dug out the rest with a strong scoop, Our pool never cleared this year for the first time, and that was what prompted the mission. $ 50 for the sand. I found that the top of the backwash system was a bit cracked so I opted to replace the laterals/pipe for $200. All other parta were fine.

Just getting the pool fired up this year and noticed my operating pressure after backwash is about 13 (normal).. but, within 8-10 hrs, it's up around 23. My filter sand is about 7yrs old. I was suspecting this was the problem. Thanks for the video, Mark.

I'm do to take out my sand in May. I surehope my Hayward Sand filter has the cap where you can take out the drain insert. Quick question, once you have the old sand out of the filter, where is it best to discard it? Is the sand considered dangerous? Should I wear a mask and gloves? Is the dust hazardous when putting fresh sand back into your filter? Thanks so much for your tutorials. Cheers Mark!!

Question Mark: In the attached video I notice the couplers are positioned away from the filter by several inches with the actual attachment to the filter being a separate join with threads. My installer originally glued and screwed the pipe directly to the tank. Assuming that my install had some flaws which I do not want to repeat, what is the best method of allowing the variable valve to be removed and separated ( I know this is necessary for maintenance)? Can you attach the union (with its own disconnect directly to the variable valve or should it be as your set up showed, attached several inches from the variable valve? Whichever it is, what is the rationale for that? By, the way, a very detailed and easy to uderstand video! Bob

The return closest to the system will have more pressure than the one that is further away. You can change the return inlet with a smaller eye ball this will give you more pressure, it will also help to make the flow in the returns even out. If you have any questions feel free to contact me I will be glad to help.

Will old sand that needs to be replaced affect the flow of water at your pump? My Pentair pump is not drawing water well and isn't priming. The return water is weak, so the jets are barely pushing water back to the pool. I have had a lot of issues with this darn pool the past two years with leaks along lines that were crushed. I am hoping now that it is just old sand that needs replacing - it is about 7 years old now...

Yes, the sand on average should be replaced about every 3 to 5 years.

Thanks for the great video, I was wondering what size of piping you were using between the pump and filter? And if you had any plans for that hard line? Thanks again.

How long does it take for the sand to drain out from the bottom? Never done this and I use so vac or this industrial vac that fits ontop of a wheelbarrow I get all the sand out in five minutes. 300 lbs

Using a shop vac or going through the drain is about the same time. Either way will work.

I added too much sand when doing a chance while opening this season (label came off and unfortunately a guess wrong) Sand is now coming into the pool when running the filter. Any advice on removing the excess sand? I'd imagine I'll have to drain the filter and start scooping

If you have the Pentair Sand Dollar filter the best way is to flush out through the drain, like I mentioned in the video. If not, you can use a shop vac to remove the old sand.

Depending upon what kind of chemicals are used and usage of the pool, will determine how often to change sand. Generally sand is changed about every 2 to 4 years

Yes, cleaning your filter will make a difference. However having solar panels will reduce the flow as well.

Hi. How would I empty the sand on a S200 side mount filter? Would I have to unscrew all the bolts around the Filter Head and lift ten half dome or just take off the Access Cover? Thanks for the help.

  • @HallmarkPoolSupplies

On the S200 filter you can empty the tank either way. I prefer going through the top, its easier and faster and you don’t have to mess with the o-ring or the bolts.

Thanks Mark. I finally disassembled the whole top access cover unbolting everything since the top diffuser was stuck and I didn't want to force it. I've owned the house 34 years and never changed the sand and everything was rock solid with scale!!! I discovered that underneath the sand there were pebbles covering the laterals up to the bottom Internal Elbow Pipe and upwards from there, the sand. Is that an ok arrangement and can I replicate this on my sand change?

Get something that is a little bigger than the hole that you can stick inside as a wedge so you can unscrew or turn out the broken piece. If you have the same filter that is in the video and need the drain cap kit, here is the link for that part. Thanks for watching. www.hallmarkpoolsupplies.com/p-1712-sx180la-pro-series.aspx
