How to change piston / top end rebuild 2002-2007 Honda Cr 250

I`ve got many nice comments for making the "Honda Cr 125 piston / top end rebuild" movie. In this movie, I show in good detail how to chance the piston on your two stroke Honda Cr 125.
A similar movie for the Honda Cr250 would be nice, and that's what I have made.
Hope you like it!
The bike used in this movie is a 2007 Honda Cr250.
Always use the right manual for your bike! The 2002-2007 Honda Cr250 bikes are very much alike but there are some changes. That's why the right manual for your year is important.
Good luck!

Great video. As a mechanic, one thing I feel I should mention is the importance of replacing the crankshaft seals. They only last for so long, and when they start to leak, they suck air, leaning out the fuel air mixture. This can result in poor idle quality, and more importantly it can cause piston failure. So if you're replacing a piston because it failed, it's essential that the seals be changed too. It's something a lot of people overlook.

+Avenger 21 The seals that seals the crank case from outside air. There is one behind the flywheel and one inside the clutch case on the crankshaft. The 2 stroke crankcase is where the air/fuel enters the engine. That's how the crankshaft is lubricated, with the fuel/oil mix.

Great video, just one tip: When installing the circlips, install them with the gap pointing straight up or straight down. This prevents the clip from being squeezed at high RPM and falling out. Other than that, great job, you've got a sweet CR

really well made video, you helped a lot of ppl. Good job dude! Let ypur bike warm up properly, and you dont need to worry about revving it. touch the cylinder from outside, if its about as hot at you can handle for 5sec's, your good to go full throttle after a couple of good accelerations. And that r2/tts is great oil for 2-strokes.

I do thank you. I have a 1985 cr125 I'm doing the top end myself for the first time. The other videos show like we are already mechanics and skip a lot of little things they don't find necessary to show. But I'm not a mechanic so where you went over piece by piece it helps me out a lot. Example...the copper washers in the front. Little things make a difference. I got my parts yesterday from Honda at closing. I didn't look at them until today. They're closed on Sundays so it will be Monday, they forgot the wrist bearing. I think that's what it's called. The bearing for the connecting rod and piston.

What signs did you notice that lead to your rebuild? I ask because I have a stock bore. My compression went from 125 to 140 psi. My manual says 170 psi +/- 15. It still doesn't run right and I've done every adjustment I can think of. Think I should bore?

I definitely wouldn't think so. '02-'07 are case reed engines. In '02 they completely redesigned the engine, along with the frame and maybe a few more things, like a RC actuated power valve. A top end change isn't very hard to do though so you'll figure it out. Major peice of advice: GET A SHOP MANUAL. It tells you how to do almost everything, including torque values which are pretty important when your assembling an engine. PM me if you have questions, I should be able to help. Good luck!

I would make sure to clean the head bolts. Any little bit of debris that gets caught between the head gasket and both mating surfaces is a definite way to create a leak. Happened to me on my first rebuild when I set my cylinder head down, scraping some of the corrosion of the bolt onto the head gasket. Unfortunately I had to go back in there and replace the head gasket and make sure no debris was left over.

  • @moparftw

Not just that but debris on the head bolts can result in incorrect torque, although not a ton of difference but it's still just a good habit to clean all bolts always.

Nice video but I had one of these and you don't have to pull the head. The piston slips part way into the cyclinder on assembly and the whole assembly drops down over the rod and you push the pin into place and put in the snap ring in. Much easier to do...it's a bunch easier ....can't do it this way on 2005 and later YZ250's though, not enough room. Same procedure for the 4 strokes...

Nathan Mcfall ya but how often do you have to rebuild a 4 stroke? been riding for 6 years but brand new to dirt bikes, it just seems like these 2 strokes have to be babied all the time, so many engine rebuilds!! it just seems a little crazy.. why do these dirt bikes require so much maintenance compared to road bikes where you just change the oil every 4-5000 kms ? by the way, do you have to replace the piston as well as the ring?

@@jangho9 2004 with 2016 fender kit brand new rebuild of the engine and the aftermarket suspension with bigger brakes and lots of goodies Im more the "built not bought" type of guy, but for the price, it was worth it and I sure going to give it some of my personnal taste onto it like my older crf250r 2016 i blew 2 yrs ago by powerdercoating the frame black and putting a 4 stroke dual exhaust on it dm me if you want to see it !
