God this looks so easy. Too bad nowadays, the fuel tank usually has to be dropped in order to replace this damn thing. I hate when greed gets in the way of DIY.

Yeah I was just talking to my dad about how we both change ours regularly. I said if the factory said inline ones need replaced every year how are in tank ones lifetime. How much bigger would the filter need to be or how little would it filter to accomplish this. My friend has a 17 diesel Chevy and it has a foam outer large particle filter over the normal air filter. Even though these often are added by users if off roading they glue theirs to the filter. This way you can't wash it like normal and the filter costs from $75-95 and virtually no aftermarket. Where as normally even oem would be 20-40.

Nice video! I just changed the fuel filter on my 2003 Lincoln Town Car (115,000 miles) yesterday for first time in 5 years. Factory manual on DVD said to remove fuel pump relay, # 203 slot in fuse/relay box under hood, and run engine til it stalls, which took about two seconds. This depressurizes gas line before removing Fuel filter, so no gas spurting, just a bit leaking out when removing old filter. Then disconnect battery. Factory DVD said my 2003 had spring loaded disconnect fittings, but it really has plastic retaining clips. Old ones broke on removal. But the new Dormant clips that Autozone's website said would fit and that I had bought were a hair too big, and I spent 90 minutes trying to fit new clips in, before it finally dawned on me that the clips were wrong, not that I was all that incompetent. Called Autozone and said I'd pay $10 cash plus cost of right clips if someone would run them up to me, 5 minute drive. They said they only deliver to shops, not homes, but I begged them to help me as I was stuck, so assistant manager said it was against corporate rules, but she would do it anyway on her own and did. The new and correct clips popped right in and I was done in 5 minutes. Then hook battery back up, reinsert fuel relay, key on engine off for three seconds, done three times, to run fuel pump to repressurize fuel system, and LTC started instantly. Revved it up a few times and it sounded great, like a new motor.

You said "it has never had its fuel filter changed" however in looking at the fuel filter that you removed (on the 2006) the filter says "Baldwin" which is an aftermarket filter (a very high quality company). So your car has had a history of having its fuel filter changed. Great video BTW - I've been looking at doing this to my new recently acquired 2011 P7B

This helped me. It is the most detailed Crown Vic/Town Car fuel filter video though be prepared to fiddle with the tool used to disconnect the front (outlet). I have a 2011 Lincoln Tow Car. The rear clip to the fuel pump, the inlet, has that very thin plastic clip. The ones that come with the fuel filter don't work unless you get motocraft filter at the dealer. I used WIX. I suggest NOT getting a smaller micron filter as that will increase back pressure on the pump. YOU WILL BREAK ZEE CLIP! when you break it do not despair if you don't have a replacement! Just don't lose either half of the clip when you break it. Install the new filter, grab a small hose clamp that will fit around the inlet fitting and insert both halves of your broken clip in, then wrap the inlet using the hose clamp to secure the clip in the hose: DO NOT TIGHTEN Beyond what you need to just snugly hold the broken clip in. You don't want to deform that factory inlet fitting as this may lead to a leak you just want the clamp snug enough to remain in place and hold the little white clip(s) in place to keep it from falling out. My neighbor cut the rear fitting off about 2 inches back, inserted steel tube into it double clamped it then used a piece of rubber fuel hose to connect it to the filter... Keeping the front, outlet fitting. Said he didn't trust the factory plastic. I don't recommend that either because it's such a small hose already from the factory and the steel tube has to fit in there causing it to be slightly smaller. BTW I had a check engine light for 8 months before changing my fuel filter and it went out as soon as I installed the new filter (with 190,000 miles) same filter as new as I purchased the car new in 2012 from Lincoln dealership. Oh yea, the original factory from brakes lasted to 177,000 miles... Though wafer thin they still had pad remaining... Yes I replaced the rotors and rear pads. At 190,000 miles these are the things I had to repair replace so far: Failure of transmission at 42,000 mi (factory reman replacement under extended warranty) Electric radiator fan 155,000 mi Alternator 165,000 mi Battery, every 2 years like clockwork. Windshield wiper motor at 145,000 mi Windshield wiper spray pump & lines at 160,000 mi Transmission again at 179,000 mi (rebuilt myself in garage using KZread video series) A/C compressor, evaporator, condenser, receiver dryer all hose O-rings, 172,000 mi Belt every 3 years (none wore out just to be safe) Idler & tensioner at 188,000 miles Rear shocks upgraded to spring over Limo shocks 45,000 miles (no air ride on my Signature Limited) I have used Mobile 1 15W50 full synthetic race oil since 41,000 miles. Doesn't leak a drop. Right Rear axle, bearing, seal 190,000 miles (had a whine for 8 months I thought we're my new tires lol, didn't realize until the seal started leaking because the bearing failed...glitter bomb! Used six cans of brake cleaner to clean out tube and diff housing best I could, will replace driver side seal and bearing after about 5000 miles just to be safe (axle may be worn but the car is quiet as a mouse now on the highway. That's it so far... Expect to replace engine with another 4.6 but may go with a coyote swap and rebuild the trans again with forged parts. At the very least I will add a supercharger and built trans. Not to race...just to have fun.

Your video was wonderfully clear on how to do this. It looked so Easy . I got the fuel filter and the fancy little tool to take it off . Jumped right to the task. Shit that old rusty filter did not want to come off. fought with it for quite a while WD40 and a larger screw driver to pry with... my god it was battle. finally it broke fee. Then when I went to put the new filter on the new clips were to thick to fit into the slots. I went back to where I bought the filter to make sure I got the right one and they assured me I had the right one and found me some smaller clips. So the 5 min job took about 2 hours and a pocket full of change went in swear jar. Thanks for the inspiration that even a girl could do this. I cut the old filter top off to see how ugly it was in the inside. It actually looked pretty clean. The outside was really rusty and ugly I'm guessing from salty winter roads. P.S.I Love my 2010 P7B and I'll be watching more of your videos.

Same problem with the clips Autozone sold me for my 2003 LTC that its website said would fit. Old clips fell apart on removal, and spent 90 minutes trying to fit new clips in, too big, before it dawned on me that the clips were wrong, not that I was incompetent. Called Autozone and said I'd pay $10 cash plus cost right clips if someone would run them up to me. They did, and the new and right clips popped in and I was done in 5 minutes.

Thank you for such a nice and well explained video. I have not changed the fuel pump on my vehicle. I had the intake manifold changed a year ago. It has 145,000 miles. I felt that it was going to take me a long time to change the intake manifold. It was leaking. It is a pain to work on the ground. I have seen the scissors that jack up a car. I dont know how good they are. I noticed that you used only one jack when you put your car in the air. I use your type of jack, a tire on the other side and a jack stand in case the big jack decides to lower the car. Thank you again for your great videos and stay safe please.

I just did this on my 09 p71. Pro tip the second plastic fittings will get stuck on to the fuel filter due to old o rings. You can carefully use a heat gun or hairdryer to loosen the o rings and it will come right out. I made sure to have a fire extinguishers next to me just in case. When I pulled mine out the o ring and some other rubber thing came with it so it put them on the new one and slapped it in there.

I just did mine on my 2010 Black and White crown Vic. I couldn't believe how rusted it was it's definitely the original fuel fuel filter which probably had close to 106,000 MI. Which is what is on my car now. It was starting to run a little sluggish here in there usually after driving 8 mi it started giving me issues mostly just a little power loss that would just go away I changed it today and what a complete difference the car is literally like brand new I definitely recommend everyone checking and changing this

With the older style plastic clip that looks like the horseshoe, but without the center Tang that sticks out. You can push the center down, without that center Tang clip can push further into the connector and it spreads. With the newer style if you wiggle and push each side vs the center your less likely to break the clip. As if you grab the center both sides can grab equally as intended preventing removal until it breaks or possibly slips. I just did this on my 08 p71 and did the wiggle which worked. My carquest fuel filter had 4 different clips either too short or thick needing trimming.

What you missed was bleeding fuel pressure......the most important part....safety first. Either trip the fuel pump relay in the trunk and run motor until it Bogs down or remove the fuel pump relay and run the car until it dies... The second seems safer to me some cars can still idle on a tripped relay

Thank you! You are a great teacher and your video was very detailed. Would you know if it is this easy on the 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX 4.6 V8? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Peace

Pull the fuel pump fuse/relay underhood, try to start the car and run till dies if it starts. Then take the gas cap off and on and you should just have a little fuel not under pressure drip out. Just did my 2008 p71 and mine didn't start and no pressure was left.

On my 2003 the new plastic clips were too thick to go in the slot. I ended up putting the two broken pieces back in and secured with lots of tape and a zip tie for good measure. That was about eight years ago so I guess it will hold.

@@jrbjr222 eh, if it gets plugged up you run out of gas, or at least your engine does. Nothing super bad. I change oil filters at every oil change, not worth the risk. BTW: I own three Town Cars, an 03 Cartier, a 04 Ultimate, & a 08 Signature "L". Love them all. Maybe I'll throw in new fuel filters for all the next my mechanic is out. Lincoln does my oil changes for $ 49 if I schedule online.

I looked at this video because I just changed to a K&N on my 2001 Crown Vic. However, not ALL of these years have the filter on the passenger side. My 1999 Crown Vic LX fuel filter is on the driver side. So I was surprised to find the one on my 2001 that I bought 5 weeks ago on the opposite side.

My 2006 Ford crown Victoria police interceptor all of a sudden wouldn't start? A mechanic said it was a fuel pump, my roommates said it was a fuel filter? I figured it out though, it was just a loose gas cap, in Oregon you can't pump your own gas and the gas station attendant didn't tighten it up all the way. I make sure now every time I get gas to tighten it up after they're done.

Before you begin the fuel filter change you can relieve the fuel pressure by using the emergency shut off (red button) on the driver side inside wall of the trunk. (This emergency shut off valve also shuts down the fuel pump if the car goes inverted.) Start the car then walk back to the trunk and hit the red button. Let the engine run out of fuel. When the engine stops shut off the ignition and proceed with the filter change. You will still have some dripping fuel, but the pressure will be relieved. I've found it easier to remove the quick disconnects while the breeze clamp is still holding the filter body to the frame. When completed don't forget to reset the red button in the trunk. Turn the ignition on and listen for the fuel pump to cycle on and back off again. If it doesn't cycle off, or if it cycles off and right back on again, you have a fuel leak. Always be mindful of static electricity when handling fuel and have a CO2 fire extinguisher handy.

Actually before you even think about disconnecting the battery you should pull the wire harness out of the inertia switch (fuel cutoff switch) in the trunk, and start the car, let it stop on its own, and try to start it a couple more times. That relieves the fuel pressure safely. Then you can disconnect the battery

I just changed mines yesterday on my 2011 cvpi and was a two hour job. It was the original one and I had 198,XXX miles on it. Man it was rusty as hell and was hard to get off. I finally got it off and when I checked it a bunch of black stuff came out. The clamps that comes with the Duralast filter doesn’t work. Go back to autozone and get the Dorman ones with part number 800-023. It’s the 5/16 ones with a total of 6 in there. It’s 3 white ones and 3 black ones. Hopes this helps out everyone.
