* Additional Notes:
CLEAN brake pistons prior to pushing back into calliper - Spray brake cleaner directly at the pistons and agitate any stubborn dirt with an old toothbrush or washing-up brush. Do not use a wire brush - you can quite easily score the pistons and damage the seals if you are careless.
Torque settings (BA Falcon):
Brake hose to caliper - 23Nm - 26Nm (17 - 19 ft lb)
Caliper bleed valves - 12Nm - 16Nm (9 - 12 ft lb)
(small) caliper bolts (fixing caliper to bracket) 27Nm (20 ft lb)
(Large) caliper mounting bolts 115Nm (85 ft lb)
Maximum wheel nut torque 135Nm (99 ft lb). Wheels should be tightened in criss-cross star shaped pattern, repeat to ensure tightness. Generally speaking, on most cars with steel wheels; tightening wheel nuts by hand as hard as you can is correct - Just don't stand on wheel brace to tighten further. With alloy wheels the official specs are sometimes slightly different.

    I know it's an old video but well done B.M you don't need the dust cover if you use ceramic brake pads just saying , there only $ 60 bucks Steve this saves the dust getting all over your wheels without the dust cover on,cheers mate great video.💯👍

    Cheers. I HAVE since put ceramic pads on it, and I agree: they're VERY good! I was SO tempted to leave off the dust covers when I did this job, as the wheels looked much nicer, but figured the extra work of cleaning off brake dust, wasn't worth it. You do still get _some_ brake dust from ceramics, but nowhere NEAR as bad! 👍🙂

    There seems to be some sort of nut between the brake caliper and brake caliper frame which appears to be spinning freely when removing the brake caliper frame. What is this nut for and why does it spin freely?

  • @SteveMack

    @SteveMack

    Жыл бұрын

    The nut you are referring to is likely the sliding pin or guide pin that holds the brake pads in place within the caliper. These pins allow the pads to move in and out as the brakes are applied and released. It's normal for the sliding pin to spin freely when the brake caliper frame is removed. This is because the pin is designed to be able to rotate, which helps to distribute the brake pad wear evenly. However, it's important to ensure that the pin is properly lubricated and free from any debris or corrosion that could affect its performance. When reinstalling the brake caliper frame, make sure the sliding pin is properly seated in its housing and torque it to the manufacturer's specifications to ensure proper braking performance. 👌👍🙂

  • @SteveMack

    @SteveMack

    2 жыл бұрын

    ...In the time between your reply, I wrote the following for you (so I'll leave it here for others that may ask) - Pull off the rubber cover (if it's still there) on the bleeder valve, then attach a length (say 1 or 2 metres long) of transparent plastic hose so you can SEE the brake fluid and bubbles passing through it, to the nipple on the bleeder. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal up and down 3-4 times, then hold the pedal down fairly hard. Open the bleeder (best using a flare nut spanner) and let fluid flow out through the air line into a waste container...Repeat this process a few times on each brake line, until no bubbles pass through, just clean brake fluid. The normal order of bleeding the brakes, is the furthest away (brake line length) first - so typically bleed the brakes in the following order: Rear Left, Rear Right, Front Right, Front Left. 🍻👍

    Are your pads worn down to bare metal? Perhaps the pistons in the calipers are seized. In any case, if it's really bad you'll have to fix it, then either replace rotors or have both left and right pairs skimmed, although sounds like it's too damaged for that. Gidday, you need to disassemble the whole caliper slide, lightly sand the bolts to get any surface rust off (which is why the other bolt is binding), clean them off then re-grease them with a high melting point grease; that will let them slide as intended, and prevent sticking 😉🍻👍🙂

    Ah, ok - sounds like it's ceased in there with RUST! - Try soaking the whole CEASED part (NOT the entire caliper; as you don't want to get penetrating oil into it, which would mean stripping down the whole thing to clean it) in RP7 or WD40 overnight (at least), then clean it all up and grease as I mentioned.

    Gidday mate - sorry for delay: Maximum wheel nut torque 135Nm (99 ft lb). Wheels should be tightened in criss-cross star shaped pattern, repeat to ensure tightness. Other specs I have at the 10 minute mark, but have now included them in the description. Hope that helps?

    @@ianmontgomery7534 Yeah I know, and cheers. It's just the mechanical term that's always been used. They're the rotating part of the brakes, hence the term rotors.👍
