To comply with BS7671 of the IET wiring regulations all circuits must have RCD protection.

The regulations also say that all supply equipment, earthing and bonding have to be adequate, but this regulation only applies to additions and alterations. BS7671 is not retrospective when it comes to maintenance. Maintenance is neither an addition nor an alteration: you are just replacing a broken accessory or light fitting with another. In other words, you can do maintenance jobs like this and not be required to upgrade the installation to the current standard.

Isolating the power can be done as shown in a DIY setting, but for apprentices, they should be taught how to prove dead and lock off the consumer unit.

One of a few reasons why it might have happened: apprentices, probably best not to stick your dinner knife in the little slot to see what it does when you get bored.

Can't knock you on the information, but if you are watching this as you know nothing about electrics and about to attempt to do it, should they still be attempting to do it?

Amateur here. Good basics, I thought. Some comments/issues .. I find it easier to bend/route the wires in the box to suit the terminal positions in the socket BEFORE inserting the ends and screwing tight. You dont really deal with the common problem of the wires in the box being too short to reach terminal positions in a new socket that differ from those in the old socket. None of the testing (I think!) proves that continuity of the ring circuit has been retained. Twisting conductors together lessens the risk, but am i right - twisting conductors together is out of fashion?

No wonder sparkies charge so much. 3 min job turned into a 20 minute video. My dad taught me how to do this about 30 years ago while I was still at school. How times have changed. Kids can't even change their own clothes without falling over. Just wait until they are a little older and the WiFi goes down, then what!!

Sparkies charge for their labour and time. What we do is dependant on saving lives. When did you see a Brickie or any other trade testing their work and filling out a certificate to say that they are responsible for thier work. The cert is a leagle document once signed. You are taking ownership of your work and signing it off as safe and that it is not a danger. If anything goes wrong and someone gets a shock, or god forbid looses their lives, then this can be used against you in a court of law and you will be found guilty of Manslaughter.

I would never remove the Earth/CPC connection first. If you do this and some idiot turns the circuit back on, then you have no CPC protection. Also please use a lock off kit. It could mean the difference between you going home to your Family at the end of your shirft, or spending a half day at the Undertakers. Insulation tape just does not cut it.

  • @tomkatgastraining

I explain the lock off kit and I also explain I am the only one in the centre at the time so I didn’t need to do the tape or the sign you only need to lock off if you think it could be turned on when you are working on it. If you are the only one there and the door to the consumer unit is locked then do you still need to lock it off ?

Why didn’t he notice that the fused connection unit to the right of the socket was wired from the two way fuse box under the work top with the cables coming through the back of the socket back box and then through the side into the fused connection unit? Witch is probably putting undue pressure on the socket conductors, Also why didn’t the fuse in the fuse box blow? And why didn’t the RCD in the main CU trip? . So there is a fault on the circuit with four all he knows is still there as he has failed to carry out any proper testing. And why is a rewireble fuse box being fed from a 17th edition Consumer unit . Pretty sure that doesn’t comply with BS7671 18th edition wiring regulations . But what do I know I’am just a humble electrician with over thirty years experience and my opinion means nothing 😂

  • @tomkatgastraining

Sorry mate you are wrong on all accounts the fuse spur next to it isn’t fed from the socket also it did trip the main RCD that’s how we new it had happened and you need to get your facts correct before you go putting a load of tosh in a comment.

Oh tomkat Gas training That explains it, your not a qualified electrician you have done one of those short courses . If you you want to be a electrician then you will need to do a minimum of four years at college and two years on sight to gain experience and then at least another five years onsite training . Then you will be an electrician. What course did you do ? A two day or a five week ? Impossible to train as an electrician in such a short time. It takes years

@@tomkatgastraining nice job mate, if people watch the video and listen properly and read the texts I think you have covered it 👍 baisically if in doubt consult a qualified electrician. I understand Sean Dempsey saying, anybody can change a light fitting, socket etc but I would still get a sparks to test as there is no way of knowing the Zs and cpc continuity, and am not sure if I’m right but isn’t a MWC needed for everything that is touched electrical even down to a repair 🤔 I maybe wrong. Keep the vids coming mate 👍👍🙌🏻🙌🏻

@UCVnUkxWD71765Co4-RlF-ww yea I understand what you mean mate, just out of interest is a minor works certificate a legal requirement, I know about notifiable works eg consumerunit ,new circuit etc and understand that you must be registered with a cps napit stroma etc to self certify or if not registered you can pay building control. But what I don’t get is the amount of diyers sticking fancy metal light fittings up and god knows what else, and obviously they cant test or fill in a MWC schedule of testing or identify earthing arrangement TN-S TT etc,,as long as it works 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ Well if that’s the case surely everything they are doing is illegal 🤔

First off all your statement overlayed on the video is wrong Anyone can change a socket light switch and ceiling rose , it is not notefireble , you do not have to notify building control, and it is not a criminal offence. Point two you are not legal required to be registered with any of the competent person scams. But if you don’t have the confidence and or competence then you should get a qualified electrician to do the work. As he/ she will check and test the hole installation and make sure it is safe for continued service. I am a qualified electrician with over thirty years experience. And I always advise people to get a qualified electrician and not to attempt it yourself .
