You really saved me with this video. I was doing exactly this and the instructions that came with the switch seemed really confusing to me. I followed your instructions step by step and now I have an extra outlet and a pilot light to know when the attic lights are on. Thank you so much 👍🏼

This is the one! Like anther person commented, I needed an outlet in my attic. The combination switch/outlet was by far the easiest option to add an outlet. Your video gave me the confidence that I needed to install it myself. Thank you.

Thanks for making this video. I was able to complete my task. Beginner mistakes I made. 1. I bought a Leviton 20 Amp combo switch assuming they were all the same screw configuration. Besides the screws being in a different spot, I had to use the loop over the screw technique rather than what you were able to do. I found it to be a real time consumer. 2. There were already 3 #12 common wires in the red screw nut and rather than do what you said and cut them all back and screw all 4 fresh cuts together I tried to just add my pig tail to the existing three. It didn't work and I finally did as you instructed and it did work. Comments: That Volt Claw tool was indispensable. I never new it existed until you showed me. I never new about the line and load wires or how and why to test them. Thanks to you I now know

Great, informal video. I'm somewhat of an ADHD handyman. Jack of all trades, because I grew up in a household where we couldn't afford licensed contractors. Electricity is the only thing I've never messed with, for what I consider to be obvious reasons. Now that I'm in my own home, I plan on (overly cautiously) re-doing the wiring. The house isn't grounded, and every outlet is (was, I replaced a few upon moving in) the original 2 prong fixture. Some of which, are so brittle to the touch that they crumble if you remove the screws. I've noticed Wago connectors are a bit of a "hot topic" amongst electricians and diyers. Old timers claim they're fire hazards, new timers claim they're safe and the old timers just don't want to be out of work, diyers just use them... cause they make logical sense. My question is, are there any known codes preventing them from being used? Everyone always gives the speech about "checking your local code" but that's such a specific thing to have to look for. I've never heard Wago connectors being involved in any code, for or against.

Wagos are UL tested and National Code acceptable. Your local inspector can be queried to see if they will pas HIS inspection. They’ve been used for decades in Europe and over ten years here in US. KZread videos show then holding up to over currents and over 25 pounds of holding force and I’ve never see evidence of failure.

@thatonneguy Genuine Wago brand connectors are fine, but beware of knockoff equivalents sold at Home Depot and other stores. The knockoff equivalent brands are not so good. I dealt with a knockoff brand, and it was junk! It looks like your home was built before 1962, as the NEC made grounding mandatory in all rooms afterwards. I live in a 1955 built home. My grounded boxes are in the bathroom, a laundry room converted to a bedroom, my kitchen wall that has the sink on it, my outdoor lights and switches, and my detached garage. You can run a test in your bathroom, kitchen and a laundry room if you have one inside the house, plus the garage, to see if you have grounded boxes, if the receptacles are 2 prong types. You'll need to use an adapter to the type of tester shown, to see if the boxes are bonded to the breaker panel by back wiring done to the box. Some pre 1953 homes have 2 prong outlets in the bathroom. If your house has a 2 prong receptacle in the bathroom, remove the outlet's cover plate screw, plug in the 3 prong adapter, and secure it with the plate screw. Plug in your tester to see if it shows correct wiring. On a 2 prong with the 3 prong adapter secured down, if it shows correct wiring, your box has a ground wire behind it in the wall. Do the same in a kitchen with outlets near the sink, laundry room and garage. If your wires are still in good condition, you can run a 12 gauge green solid ground wire to metal boxes, and use a grounding clip to secure the ground wire to the box, then run the wire to either a grounded box and attach the other end to the box, by a grounding clip or grounding screws.

Very good demo! I have 2 receptacles with one for a 3way off on 12:21 circuit on top. The bottom has a regular receptacle. Your idea would be good here. To make it easier for a new owner to understand what is going on.

Since typically you'd want to add an outlet off a switch in the bathroom you'll need to use the GFI type of comination switch/outlet. They run a bit more but of course it will make your DIY code (and much safer).

If you are tempted to install one into a switch box wired from 2011 on where the neutral wires are in the box such as this, these combo switches are available with a GFCI built into them. If the light circuit is not protected with an AFCI/GFCI breaker, you will want a combo built with the GFCI on it. These combo switch outlets come in both 15 and 20 amp models with a GFCI built into them. As you can see, this one is a 15 amp non protected half switch with basic features only. Pre 2011 light circuits use 1 cable from the fixture, making the white wire a hot traveler wire at a light switch box, not a neutral wire. Those switch boxes will require some rewiring to allow for a combo switch and receptacle.

Adding a ReVent 80 CFM exhaust fan to my bathroom. Current configuration has a switchplate with a switch to control the bathroom light and directly next to it a 110 standard dual outlet. If I add the switch shown here in this video, what kind of wire do i add to the box to run up to the celing exhaust fan and connect to the lightswitch shown in your video? Can you make a video showing how to do that? Or direct me to one if you have made one already? Thanks!

11:54 (near end of video) is where you mention that this would work only IF there is a neutral present. This should almost be mentioned right away so people will know right up front if this solution will work for them or if the need to check with another video, or call an electrician to add an outlet. There is a change the switch could be at the end of the line and the neutral in the box is used as the load side of the switch (hopefully makes with some black tape, I've seen them nor marked) and the black wire serving as the load side of the loop. This also may not work if the box was the end of a 3-way circuit (even if there is an unused freestanding neutral) because if the lack of a constantly 'on' hot wire.

@@FixThisHouse thank you for letting me know. Being able to watch KZread videos is a luxury for me, so I can't always respond in a timely matter. Had to unexpectedly rip up a master bathroom floor because the tile was coming up in a few places and discovered it really wasn't laid correctly, and the toilet flange was not raised to be level or flush with the tile (so there was leakage to the floor below) so to not delay the inevitable, I just decided to rip the whole thing out and replace tile with waterproof laminate. At least whomever put the tile down used cement board on top of the OSB instead on thinset directly on OSB (which was my fear). I think I have an unlevel floor as the OSB has a 1/4" gap in one section that contributed to the tile failure, now debating if a floor leveling compound would be useful for a gap that narrow. I should do videos but I think the platform would drop me from too many cuss words

Pay an electrician $120 plus to replace something ‘most’ DIYers can do. 2. Take the risk and do it yourself after shutting the circuit down.

this doesn’t work in older homes where they bring the power for the light to the ceiling, and do a “switch leg drop” to switch on and off the light. If you aren’t aware, a switch leg drop is where they do one run of romex wire down to the light switch box and use the black as the feed and white as the hot to the light. (usually the white wire will be marked black but some people are lazy.) obviously wouldn’t work because there is no neutral wire at the box. most modern homes should run the feed into the light switch box and then up to the light like this though.

Where would I get piggy back wire without buying an entire roll?

One last thing:. A viewer in this situation should consider aesthetics. "How badly do I need this outlet RIGHT HERE" in consideration that it will he higher than every other outlet in the room - around 48" off the floor versus around 12" off the floor. (Not as big a concern in a garage, workshop, or utility room where those outlets are often higher) and now I have a light switch that operates horizontally versus every other one operating vertically. I had customers that didn't so much mind doing a little fishing behind sheetrock for a new outlet just to maintain the "look" around the house

I would hope your viewers do not find themselves in this situation very often to where they would have to add a new outlet to an existing switch box. I'd think the requirements for at outlet here would be so unique. I.E. in a garage where a horizontal freezer is right beside the door (then the question if a freezer would work on a 15-amp circuit as many if not most light feeds in a residential home are on 15-amp circuits, at least, ones I worked in, but there are some homes like mine where the wires for the lights are 20-amo, and I can only assume it was because the house originally had a small 60-amp sub panel in the garage with 24 1/2" breaker capacity and they would have run out of spaces in the panel, so by using a larger wire (#12 for lights instead of #14) they were able to feed more lights off the same breaker.

Would have been good to note straight away that this won't work on older homes where there are only 2 wires in the switch box (no neutral, neutral is at the light).

Maybe you should have mentioned that this won't work if your switch is at the end of run.

He did mention that. He say that it will only work if you have a neutral wire in the box.
