How to Change a Knitting Pattern to a New Gauge | Switch Needle Size + Yarn Weight

Finally! A video explaining how to convert a pattern using a simple tool that will quickly become one of your favorite things to use. I've created a handy worksheet and guide that will help you translate a pattern from one gauge to another gauge. For example, if you knit a cowl with super bulky weight yarn on 12mm needles, you can easily translate the pattern to worsted weight yarn on 5mm needles just by inputting a few simple numbers into the worksheet. Whether you're a knitwear designer or just a knitting pattern lover, this tool will become your saving grace. I also explain in the guide how to convert patterns to different sizes using the same gauge.

Thank you so much! Went straight to Esty and purchased the tool. I have the free version you offered in comments for a video on changing gauge for raglan sweaters that I seen back in the summer and that was LIFECHANGING for my knitting experience. So happy to have a tool that is even more usable and easy to understand. You ROCK!

Hi Ashley, love your work. Around 7:47 in the video, you refer to circumference as length which stumped me. When measuring stitches (right to left or around) it's usually referred to as width. Length is usually rows from top to bottom. I originally started watching your Top Down Raglan in Any Needle Size video, and abandoned it, when you kept referring to the length of the collar, I was thinking maybe you meant the length of the yolk, but then 22 inches was too long for the yolk. After watching this video I finally discovered that you refer to width as length, and also to the length as length, now that I've figured out your knitting lingo I will go back and start again. Hopefully this post will help anyone else who is some what confused. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos.

Yep, length of the cast on stitch amount on your needles… Apologize if it was confusing. When I use the converter tool, I talk about stitch count to inches so that should clarify. I make mistakes sometimes!

Hi Ashley. And thanks for this tool, I think. I can’t wrap my head around why I need to do two gauge swatches. Why wouldn’t I just use the patterns stated gauge and my gauge with the alternate yarn?

However i really want to try and do the math on my own and i fidnt see a formula to rows to inches and vise versa inches to rows. Just purchased. Thank you! I am assuming you could use this same process if you don't "make gauge" with a pattern even though you are using a yarn and needles that a pattern is called for? Still a newbie knitter here so still trying to figure all of this out. 😊

I would always recommend doing a swatch for something that needs to be more exact in fit as everyones working tension is different. I know I’m a tight knitter whereas someone else might have looser tension which will all affect the gauge. For something like a cowl where if it’s a couple cm off it’s not going to make much difference but if it’s a sweater it could change the fit. Hope that helps! Happy knitting 😊

If your gauge is way off, you could convert the pattern to your new gauge.... insert pattern gauge for gauge 1 and your gauge for gauge 2!

  • @AshleyLillisKnits

Awesome! You need to think about it in terms of measurements…. Figure how how wide the decreases are or figure out what the shoulder width is once you’re supposed to be done with the decreases and convert that width to your new stitch count!

I appreciate the attempt but I find this incredibly confusing. First of all what is a stitch multiple? I understand about needing an odd or even number of stitches but not why you said to add two stitches when you were talking about the hat. Secondly it would be nice if there was a place on your chart where it showed what needle size you were starting with and what needle size you were going to in the new gauge just for us beginners to keep it straight. And I don't know if there's a way to explain this more simply but maybe for an experienced knitter this is easy but not for a less experienced knitter. Also if the yarn labeling gives the gauge why couldn't you just convert using the gauge charts from each type of yarn rather than having to do a swatch for each?

  • @AshleyLillisKnits

Thanks for your input - as you can imagine, it’s hard to please everyone! I’m sorry you don’t find it helpful…. Many others do! Swatching at least to your desired gauge is very important so your work turns out how it’s intended. If your gauge is way off, it won’t fit!

Maybe you could put out a version for knitting for dummies? Lol! Also would really appreciate it though if you could answer my question about adding two stitches to the stitch multiples for the hat question so I could at least understand that and why you were saying that? Thank you for your help with this.
