How to Change a Knitting Pattern to a New Gauge | Switch Needle Size + Yarn Weight
Finally! A video explaining how to convert a pattern using a simple tool that will quickly become one of your favorite things to use. I've created a handy worksheet and guide that will help you translate a pattern from one gauge to another gauge. For example, if you knit a cowl with super bulky weight yarn on 12mm needles, you can easily translate the pattern to worsted weight yarn on 5mm needles just by inputting a few simple numbers into the worksheet. Whether you're a knitwear designer or just a knitting pattern lover, this tool will become your saving grace. I also explain in the guide how to convert patterns to different sizes using the same gauge.

This is so streamlined! I made a converter recently and made it unnecessarily involved. Thank you. ❤
wow am I glad I found you! As a beginner with sweater knitting, your video tutorials are like having a knitting teacher in my living room. Thank you! You do not miss any little detail explaining the steps

Thank you so much! Went straight to Esty and purchased the tool. I have the free version you offered in comments for a video on changing gauge for raglan sweaters that I seen back in the summer and that was LIFECHANGING for my knitting experience. So happy to have a tool that is even more usable and easy to understand. You ROCK!
This looks great! Your walk-through made perfect sense! Thanks!
As ever, your generosity is amazing - thank you for allowing viewers to replicate this amazing tool.

Hi Ashley! Would this tool also tell me how much yardage I'd need of the new yarn? Thanks so much!

I have spent the best part of a day looking for a simple cardigan pattern for which I could use yarn from my stash. I just purchased your tool, the answer to my plight. Can't wait to use it. I have lots of yarn and no patterns.

This is a very helpful tool. It would be easier for me to follow if you zoomed in to the spreadsheet (because I'm watching on a phone screen) but it appears so helpful, that I will probably buy your tool, depending on the price. (Maybe post that too?). Thanks for the video.😊
OMG you are so funny! "You will have to use your brain a little bit," cracked me right up! Warmed me cockles hearing that this chilly day in Minnesota! You rock lady! X

Hi Ashley, love your work. Around 7:47 in the video, you refer to circumference as length which stumped me. When measuring stitches (right to left or around) it's usually referred to as width. Length is usually rows from top to bottom. I originally started watching your Top Down Raglan in Any Needle Size video, and abandoned it, when you kept referring to the length of the collar, I was thinking maybe you meant the length of the yolk, but then 22 inches was too long for the yolk. After watching this video I finally discovered that you refer to width as length, and also to the length as length, now that I've figured out your knitting lingo I will go back and start again. Hopefully this post will help anyone else who is some what confused. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos.

Yep, length of the cast on stitch amount on your needles… Apologize if it was confusing. When I use the converter tool, I talk about stitch count to inches so that should clarify. I make mistakes sometimes!
Hi Ashley. And thanks for this tool, I think. I can’t wrap my head around why I need to do two gauge swatches. Why wouldn’t I just use the patterns stated gauge and my gauge with the alternate yarn?
@AshleyLillisKnits
Жыл бұрын
You definitely could - I think it’s just helpful to understand designers and their patterns. Some designer’s gauges are waaaay different than mine so having that perspective can help!
Excited to experiment with lots of yarn weights!

yes, EXACTLY! Hope it's helpful :)
Hello, thanks for your tutorial it really helps with how many cast on stitches i need. However i really want to try and do the math on my own and i fidnt see a formula to rows to inches and vise versa inches to rows. If you could please show me the formula so i can manually convert those sections that would be great thanks.
@AshleyLillisKnits

You can purchase the tool to see the formula ❤️
Just purchased. Thank you! I am assuming you could use this same process if you don't "make gauge" with a pattern even though you are using a yarn and needles that a pattern is called for? Still a newbie knitter here so still trying to figure all of this out. 😊

I would always recommend doing a swatch for something that needs to be more exact in fit as everyones working tension is different. I know I’m a tight knitter whereas someone else might have looser tension which will all affect the gauge. For something like a cowl where if it’s a couple cm off it’s not going to make much difference but if it’s a sweater it could change the fit. Hope that helps! Happy knitting 😊

If your gauge is way off, you could convert the pattern to your new gauge.... insert pattern gauge for gauge 1 and your gauge for gauge 2!
😎🤩🥰 😊 Thanks

Can this work in machine knitting too?
In your video you say that this tool is like the cost of one of your patterns but it turns out the price is 2,5 times as much as one of your patterns, did. this change after you published this video, why is it all of the sudden so much more expensive? (Pattern price 7-8 Euro vs Tool price 19-20 Euro)
I purchased. Do you follow the pattern for decreases to shoulder
@AshleyLillisKnits
Жыл бұрын
Awesome! You need to think about it in terms of measurements…. Figure how how wide the decreases are or figure out what the shoulder width is once you’re supposed to be done with the decreases and convert that width to your new stitch count!
I bought this app downloaded it but it doesn’t work I cannot enter any numbers neither stitches nor rows. What’s wrong ?

Hi there! Please reference the PDF guidebook with instructions on how to make your own copy of the file if you’re using the Google Sheet version. The link is the original file, so you just need to create your own copy - then you’ll have full functionality!
Will this work if I don't have excel?

If you have access to Google sheets, you can use that!
I’m starting to listen to this. I began knitting the pattern for the pink zipper with the same wool and same needle size. My gage was right on, ut boy was it big. Just in time for this video…

I purchased the converter. I'm a little disappointed because I wanted something that I could download and use offline and it seems like I have to go to your website to use the gauge calculator. Not practical if I'm traveling or if my internet is down.
I looked on etsy and the price is £17, much more than any of your patterns?
@AshleyLillisKnits

Yes, that is the price and I feel it’s worth it! lots of information and a tool you can use forever… I wrote a big PDF guidebook with lots of valuable tips and tricks after I put this video together!

I understand, it looks like an amazing resource! It's only misleading when in the video you said it was available for a price of a pattern, when it's nearly treble that.

@@monikaadewunmi3426 I understand and so sorry you feel misled. It’s the cost of about two patterns and is a resource that can be used to make many patterns. Obviously, no pressure to purchase! Hope you have a great day!
Why is the tool 20 something euros on Etsy? You said it was the price of one of your patterns 😅
@AshleyLillisKnits

It’s a great tool with a big PDF guidebook and well worth the money! I made the product bigger than I originally intended hence the price, which is $17. My products take a lot of time to create. Thanks!
I appreciate the attempt but I find this incredibly confusing. First of all what is a stitch multiple? I understand about needing an odd or even number of stitches but not why you said to add two stitches when you were talking about the hat. Secondly it would be nice if there was a place on your chart where it showed what needle size you were starting with and what needle size you were going to in the new gauge just for us beginners to keep it straight. And I don't know if there's a way to explain this more simply but maybe for an experienced knitter this is easy but not for a less experienced knitter. Also if the yarn labeling gives the gauge why couldn't you just convert using the gauge charts from each type of yarn rather than having to do a swatch for each?
@AshleyLillisKnits
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input - as you can imagine, it’s hard to please everyone! I’m sorry you don’t find it helpful…. Many others do! Swatching at least to your desired gauge is very important so your work turns out how it’s intended. If your gauge is way off, it won’t fit!

@@AshleyLillisKnits Thank you so much for your reply and hope you don't take it to heart I just was trying very hard to follow but it was too quick for me. Maybe you could put out a version for knitting for dummies? Lol! Also would really appreciate it though if you could answer my question about adding two stitches to the stitch multiples for the hat question so I could at least understand that and why you were saying that? Thank you for your help with this.
Sharing your intelligence, has helped me so much to correctly knit my choice of different patterns for different projects. I thank you so much for making my hobby fun and less frustrating. ❤️🧶🤗🌹
