KNITTING ALTERATIONS: how to calculate your gauge & change pattern measurements for a perfect fit
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
It's a maths lesson for knitters! Altering knitting patterns can be so satisfying when you're able to change up a knitting pattern to get a perfect fit. Once you've decided on how & where you want to alter your pattern, the next step is to calculate your gauge so that you can work out how to make changes. This video tutorial takes a step-by-step approach through the simple calculations required to start making knitting alterations. This tutorial provides examples of how to use these calculations to change the width or length of a sweater at key places. It also demonstrates how to work out the width or length of a sweater when detailed measurements aren't provided in the pattern schematic.

The whole time I watched this video, I just kept thinking "that's it??" Not to discount the work that goes into alterations, but I think of all those hours spent searching for the perfect pattern looks-wise that's also in my size (hello, other plus size folks) and agonizing over finding one that worked right. So much time I could have spent sitting with a pattern I truly liked and working out how to make it fit me, rather than waiting for someone else to have matched my exact wants and needs in a pattern. Thank you, *thank you* for sharing this, I feel like I have been freed to make adjustments and changes as I need them and truly get the garments I want.

Yes! I totally agree, spending time getting to know how best to alter garments for your body becomes so empowering, and then you can still enjoy the pattern for what it has to offer. I'm so glad that this tutorial has helped you!
Thank you for the basics for altering and changing gauge. Sorely needed and I will have to go over and over again. A god send.

That’s what I would like to know too. I am currently trying to downsize a pattern 2 sizes & the maths is doing my head in! 😂
How would you measure the gauge for mittens that use two colours?
Aaargh... don't forget to wash your gauge swatch/tension square!! It can make a BIG difference!!
Why not just calculate how many stitches and rows in a centimètre or an inch, after doing a swatch. . Then transfer these onto your own measurements.
The plant blocking your paper isn’t helpful. Great instructions though.
