Tightening it after you bump it in requires spinning the chuck again to see if the chuck jaws threw it back out of center when you tightened them.. indicating is the “last” thing you do

Bumping a piece requires a rotating chuck. You can see where its off and better center said piece. Plus a 4(+) Jaw Chuck works better, more precise. But, for a Quick Non-esential job.....this works

The best way is bolt a brass rod in the tool post and run it against the work piece. Works everytime.

I found out you could also tap the work piece by the far left end if it wobbles at that point since you are only centering the work where the dial touches so in theory it is only concentric at the indicated point .

To save clearing all the chips off the lathe so they don't get stuck to a magnetic base, try this simple method - kzread.info/dash/bejne/nX9q17imiJydmbQ.html

Dial indicators are sensitive instruments and should be protected from such blows/impacts. I were taught to at least lift the pointer off the workpiece before striking it.

That’s right! I use two bearings attached to the tool post. Slowly spin material and slowly walk in the cross slide up against the material and watch the material 0 out! “ no impact needed!’
