Indicator Basics - Using a Test Indicator - Haas Automation, Inc.

Ғылым және технология

This video gives an introduction to using dial test indicators. Whether you're measuring a part setup on your machine, or checking machine geometry as you build a machine tool, indicators are essential tools in the machinist's and machine builders toolbox.
This general information will be quite familiar if you've been taking indicator measurements for a while, but if you have someone in your shop that isn't familiar with using these tools yet this video will be helpful. This video is a version of one we use for training purposes at the factory.

I've never understood why you would want an indicator that needs to be set up at some oddball angle like 12 degrees.

Pretty cool, but you missed one thing. A test indicator is really only intended to "test" the difference between two surfaces, its not intended for taking measurements. the reason being that it will inherently have cosine error, but when you are trying to get two surfaces to match up, that distortion to the measurement scale is irrelevant.

David, Here are just a few instances where a numerical value is an important result of an indicator reading: Checking runout of an end mill mounted in a toolholder. Tramming in a vise on your mill table. Dialing in runout on a round part clamped on your rotary table. Checking an accurately turned or ground bore to ensure it meets a TIR specification. In all of these situations you are typically looking for an actual numerical value to assign to the measurement you’ve made. And many times this value means the part is either in spec or not. Let alone the measurements we make all day long here in the factory during machine alignment. Every one of these measurements has a numerical limit.

Hello can you help me for this question? A dial indicator is used to measure ___________. A. Positive readings only or B. Shaft eccentricity, thank you, cause im confused for my exam reviewer same questions but both A and B are the correct answer, i think there is some correction there. Thank you.

You didn't talk about the effect of gravity when using an indicator horizontally. Not everyone has a coax.

I usually don't comment but there is misinformation about tip angle. First of all dial test indicator's tip must ideally be positioned parallel to surface you test, that where you get the most accurate measurement. Only Interapid and Mahr will give the same measurement up to 12 degrees. Try to do it with Mitutoyo and you will see what I mean. Interapid are great indicators but so overpriced, it's ridiculous. Not everyone can afford to buy them.

Toucan, We specify in the video that the 12 degree alignment information applies to Interapid indicators. The reason we predominantly use Interapid indicators during machine alignment, and through much of the machine shop, is that the ability to position the stylus at 12 degrees off of parallel makes many measurements substantially easier where it would be difficult to hang the indicator off the edge of a surface to attain a parallel orientation.
