It’s a shame 2 out of the 3 were foul hooked. This is why they banned lure fishing for cats on my local waters because people were deliberately cranking the baits along the bottom to foul hook them 😞

Yeah. I do think there’s a good chance both of those were hooked in the mouth/pad to start with though. I’ve had it happen to me where I’ve seen a fish hooked in the mouth at the start of the fight and by the end it’s transferred it to its flank/fin. I think with lure fishing with barbless singles, hook holds will be a little sketchy. So bound to pop a few off and with the length of the fish there’s a lot of body to then foul hook as the hook leaves the mouth.

I totally get your point. And I think any lure/Pred angler worth their salt would say how much they despise the widespread destruction MEM et al cause on our canals. But, this option does at the very least give these fish a home without them being destroyed. It’s not ideal at all, but in my mind it is a slightly better option. Plus the fact, Tony, who runs Houchins, really is one of the nice guys in angling. And I’m more than happy to support him.
