How to catch Small Eye Ray

Спорт

In this film I meet up with Mike and Graham for a session targetting the small eye ray. Armed with my AFAW Match Pro's and the Penn fathom II 12 SD's. Hot brews on tap and somewhere out of the wind always makes thing that little more luxurious. Sandeel is the bait of the day and I have 3 packs and 1lb of squid
The rigs on the day were the up and over using a 3’ body and 5’ hook snood. 6oz SKM grip leads were used to hold in the strong tidal pull.
The clothing i wear in this film is my favourite in comparison to anything else i have tried/worn and is available from…

    I did consider if it was even viable to try but time on the beach is rarely wasted and it was a good tide to try. Amazing the difference between 2 days and the amount of activity. The day before with a southerly the rod tips were busy all session, the next day with the easterly it was very quiet but we all caught something.

    Cant wait ton try 3 - way snood with crimps you just taught me in a video. Its hard finding all the right gear to match my line. Just ordered crimps & tool. Hope I get a fish on it...learning about fish scratching. So much exciting stuff to take in 😁 wish my father taught me all this. Not a sport for ladies was always his outlook 😢 No wonder Guys love fishing so much...its SO EXCITING.

    Best way to cover the bases and try for a fish. You can also try 3 different baits on the 3 snoods. Once you find out what they prefer you can then focus on that. 🎣👍🏻

    Brilliant video mate, was wondering how far you cast it? (obviously venue dictated) but as a general rule of thumb i've always been told if going for rays to whack it out as far as you can, recently that doesn't seem to be working haha.

  • @seaangling

    @seaangling

    4 ай бұрын

    Rays are a personal favourite of mine and I spend a lot of time chasing them. Distance certainly plays a part at Chesil when targeting blondes but close in and in the gulley can be very good at Southbourne. State of tide can play its part along with conditions etc. as a rule of thumb if I do not know the venue or have any previous experience to rely on I will fish one rod close and one at distance. You can then adjust both if you hit a sweet spot. If you visit a mark regularly and “know” how it fishes you can go straight to it. Hope that helps. When trying for distance I seem to average 120ish yards with a baited rig so I’m not a big distance caster. You can improve your distance by going smaller baits and streamlined rigs, this works well when using single sand eel.

    I still have those for heavier fishing as the extra line capacity helps with larger diameter mono. I have been using the 12’s for clean ground and 14lb mainline. The CS’s for heavier use and 20lb mainline. I may step that up to 30lb for Scotland. Nice to have the choice between the 2 pairs.

    Hi Martin, I tried the AFAW 6&B as they were popular and seemed to match my requirements. I liked them enough to want to upgrade and bought the Match Pro mk2’s.
