How to Catch Lobsters Whilst Spearfishing (10 Mins of Catching Crays in 4K)

How to catch Eastern Rock Lobsters in Sydney and NSW. Spearfishing and freediving for crays in Australia.
In this video i show you guys where to find crayfish / lobster. I figured it would be easier for me to just show a heap of footage of catching crays which will give you an idea on how to find green crays in Sydney, NSW Australia.
Has this video helped you to get onto crays?

All fish were of legal size and were speared for consumption, I have a NSW Fishing Licence and abide by catch size limits, daily takes and no fish zones. Over the past 5 years now I have made the commitment to no longer buy fish, so I only eat the fish i catch. Spearfishing is the most sustainable form of fishing on the planet, it is also the most environmentally friendly form of fishing.
The DPI states a combination of 2 Eastern Rock Lobsters or Southern Lobsters per day per person.

    Awesome stuff! If you're after more video ideas I'd love to see one on sharks, just generally. Your opinions/philosophy on them, close calls, anything you've learnt/reckon :) I've only just started spearing in the last few months and had my first run in with a 2m bronzie this morning. I'm curious on how common this is, and how worried I should be about spearing with them around (should I try scare it off, should I not be too worried, should I just get out of the water when i see one? etc). Cheers mate, loving your content and audio is sounding mint now too :)

    I notice some comments on wobs! I’m an old fart, 76, that reluctantly gave up diving and surfing last year. I dived a lot in the early 70’s from Newcastle north. Wobs were fair game then and there was a fish shop in the Newcastle region that would buy wobs from us as they weren’t protected then. The guys missus was an absolute wizard with a knife and could cut dozens of flathead fillets from a wob, and battered up the usual customers never knew the were eating shark!

  • @WetMammal

    @WetMammal

    2 жыл бұрын

    Haha man i think most creatures are fair game if they are sustainable the drama with wobbies would be their vulnerability to over fishing specifically spearfishing. Wonder what their mercury content is too. But i dont doubt they would be delicious eating

  • @patcummins6036

    @patcummins6036

    @@WetMammal We never thought about mercury content in fish until the ‘90s. We knew wobbies would bite if annoyed and not let go! They can also bite their own tail and would fuck up your you beaut 316 stainless spear up by wrapping their tail around it if you were dumb enough to spear them. We used smokies on them! A fellow spearo had hundreds of 303 ex army blanks and we would araldite up where the projectile normally was to make them water tight! The concussion killed them, no need for a projectile. On concussion, I killed a wobbie in a cave up near Forster and the concussion was bloody terrible. Blew the air out of my lungs and buggered my eardrums! Finished the diving for that day and left me with a bugger of a headache! Ah, the stupid shit you do as a young bloke!

    We have some pretty intense current here in SW Victoria. Down here I suggest tying a drop weight on the end of the float line. If you find a cray at the end of your breath leave the drop weight outside the front of the hole. I’ve lost some when the current drags me.

Caught heaps of Crays in the Caribbean but they have a lot of escape routes so only had luck with a snare. Can never move quick enough to catch them by hand. 15:40 so in this clip I can see that you have your gun with you (nice leatherjacket btw), however I thought it was illegal in NSW to have both the gun and torch when diving? Or is it that you can carry them together, as long as you're not using them as the same time?
