@Stoney Lonsome that's why I use light wire ewgs they don't rip a huge hole in the fish's mouth andthey wont spit them as easily when you give them slack. Only problem is ewgs aren't as strong as a straight shank so occasionally a biggun will bend me out.

  • @DWadeH94

@Stoney Lonsome that's why I use ewg it usually finds purchase in the top of the mouth in the thick part. If I was using a straight worm hook I'd probably go for a little heavier. I just prefer the light wire mainly bc it doesn't weigh as much and I can get a slowly fall.

I love to catch Gar, and there such a beautiful fish. I raised 4 in an aquarium, and they would let me pet and hold them in the water. When I let them go in the river, they hung around me for about an hour before slowly swimming off to investigate their new home. It's like they knew they were supposed to be there, but we're scared to leave.

In Texas, South of Houston I have seen alligator gar similar sizes than those in small bayous just a few feet wide and no more than 2-3 feet deep. Those gar were a pain in the butt when they’re on the trotline. Of course I haven’t used a trotline since I was a kid over 30 years ago. I actually never thought about fishing for gar before. Looks like fun.

I would imagine like bass gar have pecking orders. So the best spots go to the biggest baddest. Maybe the ones that seem low on energy get the lesser areas. With it being as hot as it is the better spots have more oxygen this time of year. So the stronger fish possibly get more oxygen. Just a thought.

Love catching these fish. We have alot of spotted and shortnose in my area along with a few alligator gar. I catch mine on roostertails and rap shads but have to let them have it for a bit before setting the hook too. Going to try a rope lure this week for a few to see how it works on some of the bigger ones that are a tough crowd for bites. Im using heavy line so they wont likely get off with rope stuck in their mouths and I've gotten pretty good about getting them in without alot of pressure. Where im fishing is on the river and ive seen some spotted and shoetnose that get to near 60 inches long and there is a female alligator gar in the pool that is around 7 ft. Ill try for her later on this summer with cut carp but she'll have to be caught on my heavy setups. Appreciate the videos and information on this method as well.
