    I have an affinity for fishing rivers too, but have never used a centrepin. I totally get the idea with the spool letting off line almost in unison with the river, but with ever changing weather I just feel casting and general management would be that much harder. Great video though. The 2 minutes explained everything perfect 👍

    I do agree with you, but if you are fishing salmon/steelhead in Pacific Northwest, the centerpin takes your game to the next level. I couldn’t stop catching using a center to float eggs while the rest of anglers got no bite using same bait but spinnings and bait caster. It indeed makes difference.

    That second method to cast will put a lot of line twist on your mainline. You'll notice it when your line starts wrapping around itself and more annoyingly your rod tip. Wading waist deep and having your line wrap around your rod tip is a huge drag. Microswilves only help mitigate a little bit when your doing very long drifts. If you're doing a short drift (fishing a pool) that line twist will linger around for a while

    Hi Italo. Just a word of caution regarding the second method of casting where the line unwinds from the side of the reel. This method will result in line twist and a resulting bird's nest of line tangle in very short order. A similar principle applies when winding line onto a spinning reel. The line has to come off the spool the same way (direction) it is being wound onto the reel or line twist will result.

    Thanks for the observation. I have been fishing a center pin for about 25 yrs and have not had that issue using all three stiles of casting. Perhaps any line twist has been absorbed by the small swivel I use to connect my leader to the main line....God bless you.

    Casting with the line coming off the face of the real is the only way I’ve been able to cast a center pan I’ve been fishing with a pen for over 10 years and I can’t do it any other way

    I think it would only occur more often using mono as it holds more memory. And less likely to occur with light braid.

    Started fishing with CPs as a kid in early 90s. Unless you are casting a feeder, the distance with CP is laughable compared to any spinner reel. Cheap and dirty CPs are good for vertical jigging, icefishing, catfishing from a boat. Haven’t tried to cast really big pile lures, maybe there a CP can work just as good as baitcaster, but I seriously doubt it won’t eat off 1/3 of the distance to prevent backlash.

    That last cast helped me gain tremendous distance in spots where I need to cast far and where I'd normally would need a spinning reel, not anymore! It's almost like casting a shooting head on a fly rod, any specific name for it? Thank you for the informative video.

    Hi Joshua, I use my center pin for river drift-fishing but also for shore/boat carp fishing and with downriggers for Great Great Lakes & West Coast salmon & trout fishing and also for boat drifting/jigging in Florida's Gulf waters. As you probably know, center pin outfits are not designed for casting and retrieving lures (a spinning or baitcasting outfit works best for that), but for everything else, works great. I have landed saltwater fish up to 70 lb on mine...God bless you.

  • @ItaloLabignan

    I fish many small Great Lakes tributaries that have good runs of stocked steelhead in both the fall and spring. Many are less then 30' wide and deeper runs and pools average 4-8' deep. To drift-fish them my go-to rod is an 11' 2-piece and matching 4.5" diameter centerpin reel. I would encourage you to check-out the Luhr Jensen Legacy line of steelhead rods. The right one for smaller streams is on page 9, www.luhrjensen.ca/legacyfishingrods (LJ30FD11M2). If you go to page 10 of their catalog you will see the matching centerpin reel. This would be a very versatile outfit for you to use in smaller and also medium-size streams. I even to a set to British Columbia and had a blast hooking Coho & Pink Salmon...God bless you.

    Hi Margaret, yes. When I fish BC coastal rivers I run 20 lb.test Sufix832 monofilament and I load the spool with it. The 20lb. test helps control bigger steelhead and salmon (upwards of 20 lb., or more), in situations where I can't chase the fish quickly due to challenging slippery bolder and current...God bless you.

    Why use a center pin, other then some u romanticized beliefs? I really want to know.

  • @ItaloLabignan

    @ItaloLabignan

    6 жыл бұрын

    Actually, in my case nothing to do with "romanticized belief". Most center pin reels are 4 or 5" in diameter. This means line will have less of a chance to "coil" in colder weather and will shoot through the guides of a long 11 1/2 -13' steelhead rod more efficiently. The main benefit to fishing a center pin is it's ability to release line off the reel at current-speed when drifting and trying to present a bait to fish holding down-current. Most center pins are equipped with a "rim-spool" which enables anglers to have precise "drag-control" when fighting fish by using one or more fingers, or the palm of their hand (palming). Even though most center pins are 1:1 gear ratio, the 4-5" spool diameter makes for quick line pick-up to re-cast and produces high-torque when applying pressure by reeling on a fighting fish....God bless you.
