Fantastic - I never knew a thing about centrepin reels (only ever fly-fished), so this was a splendid introduction

Centrepins 101, never seen anyone running a pin over here in Norway, but have been keen to learn it for myself. This is just what the doctor ordered. Thank you for making and putting this film up. :-)

I once saw an angler in his thirties, using a spinning rod fitted with a centrepin reel and he was casting a lure for Yellowtail bait. This was up in Noosaville next to the fisheries boat shed. I stood there watching in fascination as he would flick the rod tip and flick the bottom of the reel’s rim with the other hand. He was landing fish after fish and never got an overrun or tangle! 😅 Something I will never forget.

As a fly angler I’ve been tempted to give grayling trotting a go for quite a while but didn’t really understand how to use the centre pin reel. Thank you so much for this very informative video.

Absolutely superb video this. I bought an old vintage "The Gemina" centre pin at the bootfair a while back and I've never used it. Mainly because there are few rivers near me to fish that are free but I'm planning to join a club I've just discovered which has a stretch of the Waveney that's only half an hour away. Having never used one before this video has been just what I needed. So Thankyou so much for taking the time to create this tutorial. Much appreciated.

I used to have a 5.1/2" handle-less, extra wide Leeds reel that would spin for ages with one bat. The beauty of Leeds reels is there's plenty of room for your fingers between the rim and the seat. After reading an article by the great angler Dave Thomas I had mine set up with the line coming off the top which I found gave greater trotting control and sticking you fingers in one of the holes soon became second nature when playing a fish. Sadly I let it go when my trotting days ended.

Very informative thanks. I am new to fishing and when I receive my first Centerpin and rod I will give this a try. STill 2 1/2 weeks until I go on my first trip, can't wait!

Another good one is a bucket or very large cup of water. Works great for me. I use it for loading my baitcasters (I only have Bass fishing experience in South Korea), float fishing, trotting etc.. all very new to me. Can't wait to give it a go.

The tip about covering the knot with a piece of tape is so perfect, why didn't I think of that? My line has been catching on the knot I tied it on with and has been occasionally impeding the cast, many thanks for your help, tight lines 👍

I'm also new to centerpin reel fishing. I have a Speedos which spins a about half a dozen times. Maybe there's a drag screw which I can adjust, which I wouldn't have known about before seeing this great video. Many thanks. Ray

For 30 years I put the line on backwards ( off the top) but recently have experimented with the line coming off the bottom. I've not noticed any difference in terms of tangles so, as it's easier winding quickly somehow this way, I've continued with it. Nice video. 🙂

I must admit I have found centrepin reel fishing so enjoyable it's been a long time since I used one as a kid! .Tench fishing this year has been a real pleasure with one. But for me a line guard is essential.

I am just getting used to a centrepin this year, for trotting for grayling, dace and chub. I have caught a grayling and a small chub, plus a few small roach and rudd in a stillwater. I bought a second-hand centrepin, and it seem OK. The only problem is that I loaded the line so that it emerges at the top, near the handle (a mistake) and as there is no line guard, I tend to get tangles around the reel seat. Do you know if it is possible to buy a line guard on its own? The reel has holes where I presume the line guard could be fitted.

Thanks for such a detailed video. I still need to perfect how to fight larger fish, having lost the first Steelhead trout that I hooked trotting with my centerpin a few months back, but doubt that I could have presented my bait to it with a conventional setup. I will go back to using it in the coming months and may try it sooner on smaller coarse fish.

Great to watch and very informative, must admit I have been using pins for years and prefer using a pin as opposed to a bearing pin.. really enjoyed the video. one thing that is bugging me though, one of the places looks very recognisable to me... is that pickwells ( if so I fish it as a syndicate at the moment )

I purchased one last year or two. However it wasn't quite as good as expected in that it doesn't spin quite as freely as I thought it would. Lovely reel though still usable. I have since moved over to lure fishing which I enjoy as one can rove freely. One day will do a relaxing day centre pinning

Brilliant vid once again. Which type pin would be ok for low double figure carp average 8-12lb. As I've heard it's a great way to play them on a pin compared to the normal reel. Thanks

The black reel I use in the film is a 4.5in Wildriver Centrepin which would be fine for the Carp you mention. Although most any similar centrepin would should do, hope this helps.

Thanks for the really informative video. I have a 20+ year old Young Purist II (y2041cl) and it has the small dial on one of the spokes to slow the pay off. How does this actually work to slow down the spin? Is something rubbing on the pin inside the reel? Would I need to replace whatever the 'brake disc' is?

The micro adjuster gently alters the drag to slow the free spin, but I can't imagine you would ever need to replace it. Hope this helps, best of luck.

When you have a fish on, do you have drag or is it continuing reeling in??

The river shown in the first few seconds is the HDAS stretch of the Ouse above the weir.

Great video, what rod is best paired with a true pin reel, would say for example a rod with larger rings make casting easier ?

I use my centrepin's for float fishing, so I use a standard 13 ft float rod (small rings). Hope this helps, best of luck.

Is it fine to put a centre pin on to my rod rest and leave with a bite alarm. as was fishing yesterday caught about 30 Rud. and there was a guy using a centre pin and it made me feel like i want one due to how simple it was.

The black reel is a Madfish Wild River, the true pin is a Greys Bewick reel.

I wonder why the don't build more center pins with a turning link in the food, for better casting.

What is the black and blue reel you are using?.

Running the line from the bottom of the reel at a steep angle up to the first rod ring makes no sense to me as this will surely create friction. Take the line over the top of the reel and the line passes through the rings whilst barely touching them resulting in next to no friction which is surely the point of a free running centrepin. Also, this allows the user to 'bat' the bottom of the drum away from the body with a great deal of vigor when reeling in line at speed. This is surely much easier than batting the drum towards the body if the line is coming from the bottom of the reel. Also, there seems to be a fetish in centrepin circles about the need to learn the Wallis cast. It really isn't a requirement.

Do these reels work for conventional fishing?

Joshua, these reels are the epitome of "Conventional Fishing" Moreover nothing else (like the fixed spool) was freely available before the 1950's, & even then "Pins" were the "Mainstay" for the "Working Class" angler!!

The late Dave Thomas was a big advocate of having the line come off the top of the reel which is the way I used mine for years back in the 70's and early 80's."Thumbing" the line off is much easier once you get used to it and batting to retrieve is much faster. My tip for anyone looking to buy a centerpin reel. Get one with a longish stem so you can hold the rod on the reel seat directly above the reel which makes it easier to trot left to right.

you can make bait look natural to fish so catch more it is not as easy to fish like this. but will have a better catch rate on rivers it is not a lazy anglers first choice so it depends on what type of angler you are .

Maybe cud describe as a purists style. Sure, lots of modern reels do same job.and cast further. The simplicity of a centrepin is great u are in contact as it's just a simple spinning drum controlled mostly by the thumb for drag.

why not just cast it regularly holding the reel still, throwing and letting go? why you have to pull the loop?
