I love my captive bred Yellow Tang from Biota. She's teeny even after a year which is a-okay with me. She has white areas around her eyes which I am told is part of captive bred issues with Tangs. She certainly eats well so it isn't a nutrition issue I don't think.

Good video - especially the recommendation to use quarantine. You mentioned lymphocystis, so it would be good to note that this disease is caused by a virus that commonly infects fish. The virus generally sits dormant in the fish so you can never really know if a fish has it, unless the virus becomes active. The white skin lesions, which I would describe as nodular-like waxy like bumps, are brought on by stress - which can come from a variety of reason: change of environment, poor water quality (or a sudden change, such as in pH), poor diet, aggressive tank mates, or another infectious agent. Since it’s a virus there is no treatment for it. The best way to deal with it is too remove stressors, which in my experience results in the lesions fading away.

I have two Blue Hippo Tangs. Yes, there is a little chasing, but they don't fight. They are in a 125 with lots of Live Rock. They were added at the same time. One is dominant, but there are no issues. I wonder if they are male/female and how to tell them apart. No plans on breeding, but I just wonder if that lessens (or eliminates) fighting.

One tang thats forgetten in this vid is the Convict Tang. Those are amazing fish but are known to be notoriously difficult to feed since theyre pretty stubborn along with the Moorish Idol which are cousins of tangs. I plan on having a 200 gallon FOWLR tank with lots of fish with minimum amounts of rock and I dream of having sailfins, clown tangs and some other tangs I want to put in there along with juvenile angels and other fish. How many tangs can I keep in a 200 gallon?

Thanks for the video Hilary. I’ve always been afraid to own Tangs because I’ve always heard they are prone to disease. Is there any tang that could thrive in a 70 gallon system (50 in display)? And is it true that tangs love to graze all day? Do I need to give them nori to munch on every day? Thanks and a great first video!

  • @WaterLoggedLife

Thank you for watching! Tangs can be prone to some things, head and lateral line especially, but with good care its something that can be managed. As far as tank of 50g, you could probably get away with a Bristletooth tang or a Kole tang especially when they are younger, but I would always recommend going for a larger display if you can. Yes tangs love to graze, you can give them nori each day, or if you have algae in the tank they will graze on that. In this video the back wall of the tank looks bad, but I won't clean it because my tang is always back there picking at it.

I'm just going to give it to you straight. If you want to own Tangs successfully. You need a Quarantine Tank where you can dose copper for the fish. Tangs are prone to have the ich parasite on them coming from the local fish store. So when you buy a tang asssume it has ich. Ich will straight up make you quit the hobby. So get Quarantine Tank and treat the fish for ich for at least two weeks. Then do I 60% water change in your Quarantine and remove the copper. Let the fish remain I am your Quarantine Tank for a month without Copper and see if the ich parasite is still alive. If you don't after a month without copper go ahead and put the fish in your main tank. However if those little white spots show up treat the fish with Copper again.

Try feeding a variety of foods. Hikari makes a seaweed pellet that most tangs love called Seaweed Extreme. While tangs are herbovores, many times, they'll also eat meaty frozen foods like mysis. www.bulkreefsupply.com/seaweed-extreme-hikari.html
