    It's funny how people can be so serious about a ball of algae. I kind of want one now, but lol. It's a funny hobby.

    Update! I bought a palm-sized marimo in Spring 2016. Its tank came with lots of small organisms (similar to Daphnia or triops, not exactly sure what they are, though). It and the organisms are still alive, and it probably grew a little, too. Its shape isn't even round anymore because it seems to be about ready to split or bud. Yay, marimos can sustain other life as well as make baby marimos! :D

    Paul Sampugnaro It's more or less a similar fad, in that it's pretty ridiculous, and the "pets" are easy to maintain. I guess one difference is that marimos are alive, and can actually grow as well as feed other organisms, unlike Sally the pet rock. XD

    What? I have one and if you do that, it will die. It’s a plant and needs to be taken care of. You have to dechlorinate water in your tank , let it sit over night, and the next day you have to put your marimo in. Then there’s daily maintenance. You have to fill a small glass of water, dechlorinate it, let it sit over night. The next day you scoop out the old water in the tank and put the new water in. Then for monthly cleaning. (Full water change) you have to get a large pitcher or something and fill with water and dechlorinate it and let it sit overnight and the next day, you scoop out the marimo with the tank water and dump out the rest of the water and put the new water with the pitcher in them put you marimo in. All of the water is tap from the refrigerator

    Marimo is actually a type of cladophora, which is an algae. This rare algae grows and tangles itself so in time they turn round like a ball. They look like a ball of moss so people called them "moss balls" or "lake balls."

    Hi! I'm glad you find my videos helpful! No matter what the size of the Marimo is, they all should have enough water to cover them completely so they won't dry out. Marimos live under water and sometimes they float when there is enough oxygen they produce from the light. When they sink back down they should be completely covered by water. :)

    Hi! I get my glass jars/vases just about anywhere I can find them! They are available at my Etsy shop. There is a link to my shop at the end of the description in this video. OR, you can always clean out any food jars you like and put your Marimo in it! :)

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    Stephanie!!! How are you and your Marimo doing? When you pour water over the rocks you are pushing air down creating those bubbles, but they will go away in a bit. When the room is bright enough you will also find your Marimo floating, creating air bubbles all around. You can keep the jar closed, but if you have a metal lid, keep check on it periodically. Lid can rust or breed mold. Clean the lid when you change water for Marimo each time.

    Yes, you can squeeze the Marimo outside of water then put it back in the tank. OR, you can put it back in the water to allow it to absorb more water so you can squeeze again and again. Repeating the squeezing process would help to get the brown, dirty things to leave the Marimo.

    Hi there! Yeah, I carry Marimos in my shop, there is a link on my channel that takes you there if you're interested. Turning them over once every 2 weeks or so is fine. No need to turn them too often. :) If you like to read the care on Marimos click on the link in my channel that reads "My Website" on the right column. There is a page called "Plant Care" with all the details. Let me know if you have any questions! :)

    The oldest Marimo was announced to be approx. 200 years old! Marimos are very slow growing, but they basically keep getting bigger until it splits apart and make more Marimos. It is a form of algae, not moss. People call it a moss ball only because it looks like moss. Some petshops do carry them, but they sometimes are not very pretty/healthy due to lack of attention. They don't get turned or cleaned.

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    I do the same for my plants! I keep my buckets of water in the sun for a couple of days for chlorine to evaporate. You sure can do that for the Marimo too, but make sure the water had cooled after it's been in the sun. Don't want your Marimo to bathe in warm water.

    Hi, sometimes they can have a light fishy scent if you put your nose on it, but they usually don't have a strong smell, especially if you clean it well, it would smell like a plant again. The fishy smell may come from fish tanks since Marimos act as a sponge and they obsorb the particles in the water so they might have taken on the smell because of this.

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    They can be put under a lamp, but don't keep the lamp on for a whole day if it's really close to the Marimo. Too much direct light shining on it can cause a green film in the water or wrapping the Marimo. In that case you need to reduce light and give it a bath to rub off the film.

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    Indirect sunlight is diffused/filtered light such as a shaded area: under a tree, or through a window. Usually the north or east facing window is the cooler side, meaning sunlight is less intense. In another words, indirect light means you don't get the direct sunlight in contact with your plant, but the location is bright.

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    There are also petshops that carry another kind of algae ball -- they wrap java moss around a ping pong ball. Another kind I've seen is the synthetic one made to mimic a Marimo.

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    That's true -- although calling it a moss ball seems to sound more attractive? Reason it's called a moss ball is because it looks like one, but it is in fact not moss at all. It's a form of algae (seaweed).

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    Hello! Marimos will stay on the bottom if the surrounding is not bright enough. They can stay floating for a full day or sometimes 2 or more days depending on how much light they have taken in, and how much air bubbles they created for oxygen. I have one of mine in a bright room with large windows all around, and Marimo floats for days sometimes.

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland12 жыл бұрын

    HAhaa I know what you mean, but just can't explain why they are so addicting. Though it's algae, but they are a rare type that only grow in certain lakes in the world.

  • @wendiland

    Hi Grey, The thread is one of the methods some people use to hold the Marimo pieces together until it grows enough hair to hold itself together. This will take a very long time and by then the thread should dissolve (depending on thread used).

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland10 жыл бұрын

    Hi! Tap water may be fine depending where you live. Some cities or places add chlorine and other chemicals in the water and these things can harm the Marimo since they naturally live in fresh water lakes that's chlorine and chemical free! In my case, I use filtered tap water to be safe.

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    If you see a small lump that's growing out of the Marimo, that's the baby!! If it gets big enough and sometimes the mother gets tossed around and the baby will separate from her. Otherwise, you can pull the lump apart and watch it very slowly grow bigger!

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland12 жыл бұрын

    Hi, squeezing the Marimo will not kill it. If you squeeze too hard it can break it, but they will not die. They are not as fragile as they seem to be. I showed how to squeeze to clean the Marimo later in the video. :)

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    Hi! You are right, baby Marimos are fragile for baths. Should let the "hairs" grow more intact as it gets bigger. Just gently rub surface of the babies will do. They are usually not very dirty also.

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    Squeeze it as if you were squeezing a sponge to get soap out when you are done washing dishes. Use a little strength with your fingers not the entire palm of your hand so you have enough preasure, but it's not too strong that you would harm the Marimo. When you are bathing the Marimo, you'll get an idea how much strength it can stand. Hope that helps!

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    Does the water stay cool in the location your Marimo is at? Sometimes algae tends to breed more when water gets a little warm. Pour some water in the jar with the Marimo in it and shake the jar in a circular motion. It should help get rid of some of the algae filaments that's latching on the Marimo. After doing so, rub the Marimo all around under clean water, trying to remove as much of those algae as possible.

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    hello! Marimos can float for a few days sometimes depending on how much light they get. They can float and sink for days. If there's no windows you can put Marimo under a fluorescent light, but make sure water always stays cool. Too much direct light can cause green film to form.

    Hi! Marimo is a live algae that grows very slowly and tangles itself in a shape of a ball. It's considered an aquatic plant/algae that lives in fresh water. I have a video about what it is if you are interested in learning more about it. :)

    Hi there! Some of my customers told me their Marimos from these places had worms swimming out of them. A large place like that usually lack proper care for them so just be careful. Marimos I sell are bathed and shaped on a regular basis to keep them healthy. If you get them from PetSmart, you should probably quarantine them before placing with others just in case. Enjoy your Marimo & Happy New Year! :)

    If the brownish spots do not come off after bathing, it's usually a bad part so you can cut them off! Light give that area a strim just like you would if you saw some unhealthy leaves on a plant. No need to use salt water. Good luck! :)

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    Hi! Just change the water as you normally would with a filtered tank. No need to change it as frequent as you would with a jar/tank without filteration system. Just take the Marimo out and clean it by hand sometimes like you said! :)

    A real Marimo has velvet like texture., it feels like a sponge, you can squeeze it and put it in water it will float back up. When the surrounding gets bright enough the Marimo will float and create air bubbles all around. Does your Marimo do any of these things? Good luck! :D

    Hi! It should be fine changing the water everyday, but there is no need to. You can change it once a week, or twice a week, but changing everyday is just more work for you? Marimos live in fresh water lakes originally so they would not like salt fish tanks if that's what you're thinking about. Hope this helps!

    Direct sunlight is sun rays shining at a high, top angle. It is the more intense light, hotter location such as west facing window or out in the open during the warmest time of the day. If your Marimo is by a west facing window, move it further away from it. Strong sunlight heats up small tanks fast.

    Hi! Marimos are pretty expensive because they are super, super slow growing! Their average growth rate is just 5 mm per year! Though they are slow growing, but they can pretty much grow and live forever...There's Marimos people find in the wild that's about 200 years old! I carry the younger ones at my shop (not 200 year old ones). There is a link that takes you there in the description right under the video. Thank you for watching & See you soon! :)

  • @wendiland

    It's possible, I just remembered they looked like worms when my customers sent me photos. This can probably happen when you don't change the water often. Some petstores/fish shops don't change the water in tanks very frequently. Anyhow, Have fun making those babies. If you want more Marimos in the future, I also carry them at my store. Come back for questioins as needed! :D

  • @wendiland

    Hello! It depends how fully grown is your Marimo. Sometimes if the strains are not grown intact enough, the Marimo can be very loose (fragile), strong movements can make it full apart. In this case you can roll up the pieces to make more Marimos. They will take a pretty long time to adhere so be very patient. :)

    Hi Koda! I thought I had answered this question before, but I don't see a reply thread on here...Whoops! You can add an ice cube or two in it to cool the water or just completely give it new water. Either way is fine, the Marimo shouldn't be shocked by the rapid temperature change.

    Do you have any promo codes for your website right now? It would be greatly appreciated because I’m considering getting a marimo.

    I'm glad you asked. Marimos are fresh water algae. They naturally live in freshwater lakes. I'm sorry. :(

    Hi, The glass is available for purchase through the Etsy link on my channel. As to your question about the glass distributor -- since I do this for a living, disclosing any information about this would be detrimental to my business. Hope you can understand. Thanks.

    Where did you get that glass? I love it! I've had my marimos for about 8 months and they have lived in a 1.5 gallon fish tank but for two that are s a lot of space so I want to get something smaller.

    Thanks for posting your Marimo vids, Wendi! Very informative. I work at a large pet retailer & always try to inform folks about the benefits of including a "moss ball" in their aquariums and fish bowls. I have not tried to sell the Marimos as pets, though--Why not? Better than a pet rock. :-)

    I just got one yesterday! I’m not aloud to have ANY pets and I had to talk to my mom about this for a Marimo moss ball. I’ve been waiting for FOUR months to get one! I’m so happy lol. I put it in a small tank of about 8 by 4 by 5 inches alone. It’s about 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter😊 looks pretty “lonely” though so I hope to get another. Probably a smaller one though😘❤️

    Hello! I just ordered an extra large Marimo from you on Etsy. When it arrives can I put it in water straightaway or do I have to let the water stand or anything like that? Sorry if this is a silly question.

    Hi! No you don't have to as long as you trust your source. I've had customers that bought theirs at pet stores and had worms came out of them. :)

    Hi there! Filtered water is tap water that's been filtered, or any bottled water so there's no chlorine in it to harm the Marimo. I think your Japanese teach would love that. It may bring some nice warm memories of his home. :)

    Oh! As for lighting -- make sure you keep it in weak sunlight or indirect sunlight. Marimo may like some morning sun, but not afternoon sun as it's the most intense.

    Hi! Yes, you can keep it in an emtpy food jar as long as it's clear. Glass or plastic is ok. If you want to keep the metal jar lid on, make sure to wipe the lid and opening of jar dry to prevent molding. Make sure to clean the lid very well each time you change water. Your English is just fine! :D

    Hi! I know I already answered your question on Etsy, but I'll write it here also for others. :) Filtered tap water should still have a little bit of minerals left over for the Marimo. Depending on where you live -- tap water in some places are high in chlorine and fluoride which does harm to it. Sun gives engery and nutrients for it to grow also. Best to keep your Marimo in filtered tap water or bottled water.

    Yes you can keep them with Betta. They are known to be good companions with Marimos. My Betta loves tucking between his Marimos. :)

    Hi there! You can break the Marimo apart, and the pieces will slowly grow back in the ball shape. They do grow super, super slow so you would have to be very patient. :) Their average growth rate is just 5 mm per year! Thanks for watching!

    Hi wendy, love the marimo videos! Just wondering what your opinion is on the marimos which washed up from the sea on a beach in sydney, Australia? Ive done some research and apparently they are actually quite fond of salt water and originated in the sea before receeding to lakes in japan. Its a mystery how so many ended up in australian waters though!

  • @wendiland
    @wendiland11 жыл бұрын

    Hi, do you use tap water? There is usually chlorine in it like you said, and that can cause harm to the Marimo. Try using filtered tap water, drinking water. Bathe the Marimo in filtered water before putting it back in its home. This will ensure that you get most, if not all, of the tap water out of the furry thing. good luck!

    Can I ask a question? I see a lot of marimo "terrariums" for sale on Etsy. A lot of them have an extremely small opening on the vase, so you can't reach in to take out the marimo. How do you change the water in this situation? I would be afraid as you tip the vase to empty the water, all your sand and shells would squish your marimo! How does this work? Or should you only use a vase that you can reach into to grab out your marimo? Thanks for your help!
