Gurdjieff said something like: "take the knowledge (wisdom ) of both the East and the West and then make your search" for reality by living in the inclusive question that incorporates both the East and West wisdom.

great guest and I recommend you try his teachers, like Joseph Goldstein (who has many recording on youtube). I also strongly recommend you continue retreats (not the same as you did) and make the push for stream entry which will make things clear.

do you think the dense population and poverty induced or helped develop a way to take it through meditation? otherwise there would be more violence? my nosey apt is unbearable especially if attempting meditation

It seems to me the "preachiness" is always suspect and surely questionable in that it can be seen to come out of conditioning of the mind of the people involved. Perhaps the person who 'originated' the teaching did not suffer from this kind of mind state that tries to "push the river". Those involved in teaching what the "master" taught are rarely as free as the "master" and are often caught up in the fear and hope level of mind. So they can't help but bring these mainly unconscious motivators or unwholesome motivators to the way they try to pass on the teaching. Underneath the preachiness is aversion (fear of the teaching not spreading and I will not feel as unsuccessful or even a failure in passing on my master's teaching) and/or attraction (the hope that it will spread and my self worth is measured by how well it is spread or passed on. To the extent that one is freed from the idea of being a separate self and so finds that it is less and less subject to reacting in an unbalanced way in the face of "that which is difficult to bear" aka "dukkha" whether apparently outside circumstances or apparently inner circumstance, to that extent you may pass on something that is real/genuine and not of illusion/delusion of the mind.
