Ive learned that if you are the type of person who needs perfect geometry and gets bugged by even the slightest bend or crooked line, a CRT is probably not for you and to just get an LCD and upscaler. I do appreciate CRTs though along with their flaws and enjoy them regardless. Thanks for this video!

So true, I learned to just accept that part of gaming. Having to adjust the TV for each system every time I play them. I just got a new BVM that shows so good. It has 3 save file options. So it is super easy to switch though adjustments with a simple touch of a button. Makes life so easy. Thanks for the visit. Hope to see you in the future.

General reminder that aside from the geometry/tilt/etc, some of the brightness/contrast/color options may be best changed in the normal settings manual rather than the service manual -- I would only change these in service if the standard menu is not producing the desired results.

I set all My service settings as required with the normal menu settings all square to be able to work with a strong base template, and then do simple adjustments accordingly without needing to go back into the service menu.

I've wanted to calibrate my Sony Trinitron for years but any time I got in the service menu I left bc I know I have no understanding really about any of the specifics here, and I figured I'd fuck up my already really good image , but I was just able to adjust the few things you spoke about and it looks a good bit better now. I really like how you explain shit, it's easy to understand you don't go into unnecessary technical speak about all the little details and gave me the confidence to finally make my screen a lil crisper , I've been wanting to do this since like 2018 lol , my friend had a random 250 pound Sony KV 36FS16 in his old basement he was gonna trash and I was like HOLY SHIT DUDE THATS A FUCKING GODLIKE CRT I NEED IT, lol. But I live on the 3rd floor of my apartment complex and it us 3 guys 2 hours to get it in my room lol

If you mess with your values and you can't remember what it originals you can just master reset everything and it all goes back to stock. It's not that dangerous to play with service menus, just make sure to master reset if you screw any values up.

Thank you, it is really hard to do. You got to get the angle just right plus the lighting. I turned lights on, off, moved my camera up down. Tilted it until bam! Then I did a few test videos about 1 min long to see if everything looked right. Then pray the hole time as I record it stays in focus with correct white balance.

Great video man! Looks like you got the JVC set for 240p and the Sony set for 224p. That’s a dope setup. I got my Sony Trinitron (KV-32FS100) calibrated to 2560x224p so I can use switch res with integer scaling so everything that’s 224p displays perfect without overscan. And I have a Panasonic GAOO setup for 240p for MVC2 (PS3) as well. Awesome setup bro!!

This was great. I set up my TV by using Final Fantasy III for the Famicom since the edges line up perfectly along the edge and there's some good straight lines as well. The color was fine so I never had to touch that luckily. I'm going to use this test mine again though.

I messed with my TV, stupidly without writing down the numbers, and well this video helped a bit. I managed to get it looking decent. Not really to an ideal standard, but I think thats impossible without opening the TV, as ive found that the entire image is tilted, so no matter what I do the right corner will be lower than the left corner.

So glade you got it working again. The tilt is the yolk that's off. You have to open it then re tape it down after adjusting it. I will look for a video showing how.

If I wanted the cleanest image possible id probably get a PVM. But hey maybe someday ill get my TV looking as good as can be, opening it up, maybe doing a component mod if possible.

@@Yipper64 just remember that with each console the picture will change look. You will get it to look good but it's difficult to get perfect. So don't be discouraged or scared if you can't.

First thanks for the video. I've been doing a fair amount of 240P Test Suite tweaking and research in the past few months. 25:03 For setting the proper cut I have found going to the "Color Bars" where it shows the same pattern here but a transitional from black (cut) to full color (drv) from left to right to be most beneficial to setting cut values as you want each color to transition from black to starting to show color at the same time. Otherwise your darker greys will have a tint of the color(s) that transition to color too early. Now what I'm trying to search for is at one level is correct for this to come out of black (cut) into color. You'll see at the top from left to right numbers to letters and right now I have 0 set to black, the bar between 0 and 1 starts to feed into some color. Right now on our 20" WEGA using component from a Wii 240P we are trying to fix some faint vertical raster-like lines on a black screen and I think it's because maybe our cut isn't happening soon enough? Thanks again.

Any ideas how to fix the convergence or Yoke on a KV -36FS100? Basically all of the corners are blurry at the moment

33:28 Here's a tip for your particular set, use the overscan feature of the 240p suite and increase the value until you see a thin line on all 4 sides then go to the TROT option and change the value to rotate your screen until it looks even, it looks like you need to give it a touch counter clockwise.

@@JoeRetroWorld Maybe despite having the option on the menu the electronic circuit to make it rotate is not there. It's not too hard to fix that though, you open set loosen the yoke screw rotate it by hand and retighten the screw.

Correction on the first lag test: You don’t check the LCD by pushing the button to stop it, otherwise both screens will show the same result as the LCD display catches up with the CRT. The correct way to do it is to take a PICTURE with your phone of both screens in frame at the same time. In the pic it’ll show how many frames BEHIND the LCD is relative to the CRT. 👍🏽

Been using this video as a reference, slowly trying to tune my Sony crt, didn't see this mentioned unless i missed it, if you change any values in the service menu, you have to press mute then enter (not sure if you absolutely have to press enter) to save the changes. If you don't so this, once you unplug or lose power to the crt, when you turn it back on the settings will return to the original values.

in sega satturnN and psx In Samsung TVs, if you lower the contrast enough, you raise the brightness somewhat to compensate for the decrease in contrast and lower the definition to the top, the pixels and saw teeth disappear;)

Also RDRV GDRV and BDRV means Red Drive, Green Drive and Blue Drive :P RGB Drive adjusts the white level while RGB Cut off adjust the black level

From what I know, the service menu only adjust vertical line and linearity with one solid line across the screen. Now if one side is blurry or off. It could be the yolk that loosened and fell off-line.

Is there any way I can check which hertz number is my CRT TV? I have both 50hz/60hz but it would be helpful to know which flickers less when recorded

If on the back There's the label saying 120V 60Hz or 220 50 Hz you know. If it manages both then the Hz displayed on screen depends on the source signal.

When I turn on the Sony next to it. The Sony tv automatically degausses itself when turned on. It's so strong that any CRT TV around it will affect the magnetic field from it. There is nothing wrong with the jvc or the setup. Everything runs good. Let me know if this helps out.

Can you please help me. I want to use 240 test suite on my Trinitron using a PS3 or PS2 with component cables. Problem is, test suite isn't made for PS2/PS3. Any help would be a massive help. I have Digital Video Essentials but it's a mess of a software.

Three questions I either missed or were not answered... 1) I’ll be using it primarily to straighten out the image/geometry on a Sony Trinitron KV-36FS210. If I use it with a SNES on component (say input #3) and get the settings where I like them, will those settings remain if I use a Genesis on the same component input (input #3)? Or will I need to calibrate using the Genesis as well even though I’m on the same input I used to calibrate with SNES? 2) After getting the geometry straight on component input #3 with the SNES, will those settings carry over to component input #4, or will I have to calibrate component input #4 with the SNES separately? 3) This is probably answered with number 1 above, but just to make sure… if I download the 240p software, burn it to a disc and use a Sega CD or Dreamcast on component input #3, will the calibration settings remain for any other consoles I use on the same input, or do I have to calibrate each different console on the same input?

Hello, each system sends out a different signal even though they are all component signals. The voltage of a PS3 is higher and stronger then your Super Nintendo. So when you calibrate your set using the 240p test suit with a Sega Genesis like me. It will be totally different when calibrating your TV with a Super Nintendo 240p test suit. So you will have to adjust the screen each and every time you switch consoles. My PS2 using Factory component cables always needs horizontal adjustment yet my Super Nintendo using HD Retrovision component cables fit the screen perfectly. This is frustrating at times for people like us that play multiple systems.

On the grid pattern, should the row of red squares be fully within the screen?

The red area is your overscan area for most games. You can leave the settings showing all of the red squares or just half to guarantee that you see all of the game screen and not the overscan parts of the game. The over scan parts look blue or black with digital blinking lights or dots. It doesn't effect game play and it won't damage your TV.

Do you (or anyone else here in the comments) have any idea what adjustment I would need to make in order to fix an issue where the "pixels" during the grid test are much narrower in the center of the screen than they are towards the edges? In particular, the dots in the center of each square are more like small lines than square dots.

I explain what that is in the video. That would be the vertical Linearity settings. The abbreviations start with a V. VPOS is vertical position. I can't remember the rest but it's in the video. You just have to watch it all.

I explain clearly in the first 5 minutes that you need to write down all the settings before changing anything. No one ever does this, then they come back later saying they didn't do this. Can I help them please. That's why I say you can damage it by changing the settings. Please view the whole video so you can understand what you are doing. Let me know if you have any other questions. This is using third party software via the device you have hooked up to the TV. Are these settings saved on the chip in the TV, or are these settings saved to the device that's plugged into it?

The settings are saved in your tv.

I don't like that the test suite runs on a console. Do you know of an alternative to run on an ESP32 with RCA board or such, or any other Arduino. It is a pain to drag consoles around with TV pickups, the M5 Stack on the other hand can be put in your pocket.

I don't know what any of those things are. I will Google them. Quick question: Can those devices run emulators? If so, a simple emulator with the test suit would work as long as it sends out the proper output signal like composite, svideo or component. Maybe a mister or raspberry pi will work.

Some of the settings can change electrical ratings burning components from over voltage. So it is best to learn as much as possible. Then change only what you completely understand after you write down everything. Google your TV Model and look for a manual you can read up on.

I've got a 13" Symphonic CRT/VCR it's model number is SC3813. I've got the original remote. I'm wondering how to get into the service menu? Not sure where to look either for more info lol currently it seems to clip off the top and bottom a bit. I'm thinking I can just play with the vertical position / zoom or something. Never done this stuff before though so not sure. Thanks!

@@JoeRetroWorld Thanks and sorry for the delay. I tracked down the service manual and bought it to get the code to enter service mode. It is super limited though and seems like I can only adjust the horizontal placement with the remote. All the other settings that sound like what I might want seem to require opening the tv up and making adjustments to stuff on the circuit board? Unless I'm reading this manual incorrectly I think this might be a total bust unfortunately :/

Pretty sure that wega has a yoke adjustment in the service. I think it's Called notc or noc. Something like that

It's not really a yoke adjustment in the service. It uses magnet's to "tilt correct" but functions the same as a yoke adjustment for small corrections

Hello, the other day I bought a 29-inch Sony wega trinitron, I'm happy with the image but I notice that it could be seen much better, I have the game cube and the psx connected by rgb cable and they look good but it doesn't quite convince me, apart from this tv I have a 21-inch so and trinitron and I have the feeling that it looks much better, more vivid colors, sharper and more alive in general, a friend told me the other day that he does not recommend that they be wega , says that the trinitron alone are better, what is the truth in this? You think it is better that it is not wega, the TV is 50 hz since I am from Europe Spain, I say it because it is not 100hz since I do not like anything for retro video games, I do not see that it has any image failure, it is I just think that it should look better than the 21 trinitron in quality and it is not like that, another thing is that the scan lines are more noticeable that if I take it for granted, a cordial greeting from Spain Barcelona

I have a smaller 20" Trinitron that looks better then the 27" in color. Smaller sets don't come with the problems bigger ones do. Some wega Trinitron sets only the 100 hrz sets are bad for gaming. A regular 50hrz is perfect for gaming. They don't produce any lag. The 100 hrs sets upscale the picture image to 480i or 480p when you put in a 240p signal. This makes for bad gaming on a game cube or psx. Also if you are using cheap cables this will affect the picture quality. Try getting some HD retrovision cables or something similar to quality. Have you tried adjusting the color in the service menu like I showed in this video?

You can change a setting that will distort the picture where you can't see the picture no more. You won't be able to get the picture back.

@@steliosemmanouilidis5050 oh, so sorry about that. Some of the settings in the service menu can make the picture unwatchable by either having vertical position or horizontal position off. The color pallet can be permanently changed making red look orange or even having it not show at all. So I tell people to not change anything if you don't know what it does. Know do you understand? I hope I explained it good.

Great way to encourage folks to do adjustments and general crt repairs: "I'm not opening my tv because you can and will die if you touch the wrong part". Jesus. Instead of spreading straight up fear just point which parts you shouldn't touch. Don't persuade them of not doing things anyone can do with a little caution.

When it comes to safety, you have a responsibility to inform the public. That is why they need to know if they touch the wrong spot, bam! You don't become a fireman or cop not knowing you can die from the job. When you know the dangers of a job or task that you are about to start. You can avoid those dangers and complete the task safely. Knowledge is key.

Man i would have paid you to come calibrate my sony 36xbr800...i use my unit just to watch vhs/dvds...do you live in nyc?

So sorry, I am in Dallas, Tx. So what do you use? DVD/Bluray player, console (Playstation 2-5 or similar)? That XBR is top of the line, you are lucky. I want a bigger CRT TV like a 32 or 36 like yours. So no gaming for you on it?

@@JoeRetroWorld ...no gaming except my atari heavysixer from time to time but mostly flicks...i got a Samsung bluray on it that i view dvds and i got a Panasonic ag7650 which i view my vhs...🤘. Got the crt on craigslist with stand for 50 bucks...in excellent working and cosmetic condition...with remote ..manual.. jacks..etc. The complete works. The lady never used it much since she bought it brand new when first released. I guess i got lucky...😁🤙... she paid close to 3500 plus tax with the original tv stand...well that is what she told me and i definitely believe it...shit weighs a fuckin' ton..

That's a trip on the back story, it's the same scenario when someone finds that sweet car. You have to be a rich person living in NY with something taking up so much space, lol. That beautiful 175 lb beast has to take up a whole corner.

@@JoeRetroWorld ...hahaha...i am not rich that's a good one mate..i am just a bloke with a girlfriend and an american bull terrier pooch who owns a 3 bedroom apt coop in the big 🍎 and got an average full time job...i renovated a bedroom into an entertainment man cave...just woke up one day and said ..you know what i will make this room my go to...for odd nostalgia crap which i grew up on and had fond memories. ...😁👌. Yes i am using component for best pic possible...plus i got my laserdisc pioneer hooked up on it to watch a few laserdisc flicks i acquire in the goodwill...🤙

@@monsieurmike2072 nice...laserdisc is awesome. The first time I seen the quality of it I was blown away. Even now it shows just as good as some DVD'S.
