Man, that 36” Sony is insane. I helped a friend move his 36” Sony out of his 3rd floor apartment many years ago. Unfortunately he took it to Best Buy to have it recycled when he first upgraded to an LCD. I found out a few months after he got rid of it and was mortified

I have a KV-32XBR400 weighing in at around 200 pounds, your TV is roughly 250 pounds insane! When I first purchased it, I still live with my parents and my bedroom was on the second floor. My dad and I broke our backs bringing it up to my room and I told myself I’d never do that again. Eventually it stopped working and recycled the TV, but then one day I saw a craigslist ad for a free Nintendo Wii. Found out that to take the Wii I had to take a few other items, or no deal. Well, one of the other items was a Sony TV, the exact same model I bought back in 1999. I was so happy that I got a working exact replacement to the broken Sony TV, still works great today.

The old wooden console sets have always been my favorite. Reminds me of my grandparents' house. They used the same 25" Zenith for decades, and it belonged to my great grandma before that. I still remember the mess of different adapters my grandpa had rigged up so they could connect their satellite box to it.

What a cozy and badass room, I wish I could dedicate a whole room just for my games and CRTs but I can't so I only have 3 CRTs throughout the house, still I'm pretty content with them, I have a SD Sony VVEGA manufactured in October of 2008 one of the last made with less than a 100hrs of use, it was from my grandparents (I guard it with my life), and one of those Widescreen Sonys which is what I use all the time to play stuff including modern games and I also have a 38" LG FLATRON which was our family TV made in 2002 and is massive and awesome, what I do have a ton nowadays is CRT PC monitors which I love collecting and since they don't take too much space I can have many, they offer very high resolutions and refresh rates and great picture quality that still blows LCDs out of the water, the only thing coming close to them is my new 4K OLED monitor but for old 3D games nothing beats them, PC games look awesome and console games through an emulator running them at 4K internal resolution makes them look like modern games, it sucks to think that someday these CRTs are going to die, nothing can truly replace them but at least we still have the chance to enjoy them.

this is such an amazing vibe. i was born in 2000 so by the time i was a bit older and started really getting into technology and playing video games and stuff, i didn't really use CRT's that long before flat screens became a thing so i don't really have any nostalgia for them. but i would absolutely love to be in a room like this and sit back and play some older consoles on a CRT

I was born 2000 so I feel you on that. By the time I was around 13 or so it was all flat screens at my parents. I just assumed that I thought PS2 looked better back in the day because of nostalgia. Then I hooked up a crt at my grandma's house and wow it actually looked good. So I took the tv home with me lol.

I had a 27 inch Wega from around 2002 or 2003, growing up. I think the weight on it was 160 or 180 lbs, difficult to remember exactly, but they are heavy. All CRT TVs have some heft but the Sonys in particular were built different, no joke moving those around.

  • @mndlessdrwer
    @mndlessdrwer Жыл бұрын

you are 100% correct in thinking that old game consoles are best played on CRTs. And there's a good reason for that: the game assets were designed expressly to take advantage of some of the characteristics and deficiencies of CRT technology in order to produce an image that has more detail or could be made on a console that couldn't otherwise produce such effects if it had to be rendered properly. Translucency and certain lighting effects being made with dithering is one example while sub-pixel rendering is another. Basically, sprites and low polygon models tend to look better on a CRT due to natural anti-aliasing combined with the way that colors tend to smear slightly between phosphor groups as the electron beam sweeps past. There have been videos and articles about it where they show what the console is outputting compared to how it looks on a CRT and the difference is startling. It's why the old 16 and 32-bit games look like trash compared to how you remember them looking on a CRT. It's also why a lot of gamers who really love that particular generation of console but also have newer consoles capable of outputting 720p/1080i will just have two CRTs (or more) in their collection so they can take more advantage of how the art assets were designed to take advantage of standard definition CRT displays. Honestly, given that CRTs are a finite resource and a consumable one, if you've got the space then there's no shame in hoarding as many good examples as you can find while they're still available and not horrendously expensive. Most people nowadays just don't understand their appeal, and that's a good thing for retro game enthusiasts. I still want to buy a 720p/1080i model to use with my GTX960 with a DVI to component cable for gaming. There's just an aesthetic to how CRTs render images that appeals to me. It's less like looking at a moving picture and more like looking through a window. Unfortunately, I have no space.

If only they made CRT's for like 5 more years... Like the shallow-depth sets Samsung were pioneering in the mid 00's. Imagine multiscan 240p to 1080p 16:9 sets, with 1920 actual TVL resolution, going all the way up to 2160i... Just imagine if these were common place, up to sizes of say 45"... What a dream.... Little do people know, it's not just the motion, multiple resolution support amd contrast that make these the ultimate, but it's also their unsurpassed light quality (CRI) of 90+. Reference is CRI 100 (sunlight). Plasma was 70+, LCD 50+, QD/OLED 40+, microLED 30+.... It just keeps getting worse because of energy efficiency pressures and woder colour gamut rubbish. Artificial light will always look harsh and unnatural. Garbage in garbage out. To this day CRT still produces the most natural light and colour and only future upmap-dithering can possibly mitigate this perceptibly. My guess is that display manufacturer shot callers made the decision to kill off their CRT production just as the tech was becoming more feasible for true HD widescreen, because they knew it would kill the market adoption of disgusting LCD's where obscenely increased profit margins were to be had. My thoughts

the only next choice is a high end PLASMA TV they also use phosphorus like CRT you can get them for like 100$ now days but if you are looknig into decent LCD tv i suggest the CCFL type with SPVA panels.(i suggest a sony ) these came out around 2008 2009 ish.. the Coloring rendering is pretty decent.. at 82+% the SPVA is the king of LCDS just don't get the HCFL those have poor color rendering

  • @lovemadeinjapan

    11 күн бұрын

@@theantiveganchannel3596 Yes, for example a Bravia 40W5500. Great CCFL TV. Plasma's are even cheaper. I have 2, one was 30€, the other one 0€. Just make sure it is a Panasonic. LG's are really bad. My Panasonic plasma's are really amazing, even more stunning than the 40W5500, but the LCD is suitable for computer use (browsing and such), on a plasma you get nuts of the flicker, which is just like a CRT: if you run a plasma on 24p for a movie, and leave it like that, then browsing is a nightmare. On 60Hz it is doable, but an LCD has the edge here, with sample-and-hold, and a backlight running at like 10000Hz.

Your Toshiba 30HF83C is a nice one. It's made by Toshiba and not Orion, and has a high quality Japanese Toshiba Microfilter tube. It should be lag-free at 1080i, have some lag at 480p though. The previous model years 1999-2002 Toshiba HD CRTs do lag-free 480p as well as 1080i. Keep an eye out for Toshiba's large size 32" and 35-36" standard def models from the 90s-early 2000s as well. They are very good tubes.

@@J.Wick. they didnt slap it on anything sony sold the rights to use their technology to other manufacturers you should look up what makes a tube a trinitron tv its not just some label sony MASTERED crt's no one could make one as good they figured it out and patented the technology. if a tv said trinitron it was using sony technology.

Having seen both, the D series and the Trinis are really competitive with each other. Would love to have seen them brand new, as the phosphors on every crt are at least a little worn by this point.

I'm surprised about your 13-inch childhood Hitachi not being better. My father's 13 inch Hitachi from 1978 was a good looking TV, at least from what I recall. I wish I could find a unit like that TV. I broke it when I tried to move it. If it had been any other TV, I wouldn't have lost sleep over it, but this TV was special. He even had a headphone jack installed :(

I definitely love it but in comparison to my other crts the picture just can't stand a chance against them. It's a great nostalgic crt but doesn't see much use. I'll never get rid of it tho, just means too much to me. I certainly hope your able to find a crt from your childhood one. Nothing beats that trip down memory lane

Bad ass tv collection 📺 That 1980s Wood grain Hitachi tv with Friday the 13th pt 3 in the background reminds me of a Zenith tv my mom had in her room back in the mid to late 1990s. Man do I miss that thing. It was wood grain, heavy and gave the bedroom a cozy vibe! I recently picked up a few crts and am starting a small collection. 1st is a super tiny Panasonic Roadshow with built in vcr. 2nd is a 1994, 27” Sony trinitron (which is getting worked on as of now) and the most recent one is a 1990, 20” Sony Trinitron. I love the black tube crt’s. I’m not really a fan of the silver/gray flat screen tvs. I did grow up with both but prefer the black tube ones more! Happy hunting 🕵🏻‍♂️📺

Spoilt for choice! Like the decor too, vibing. Having got one myself, I would recommend you try getting a Loewe Planus (or Aconda) with the VGA port (if its not installed, there are aftermarket 3rd party versions available to install). In Europe/Aus, the tv is "limited" to 480p, but i have read that in North America they are 1080i. (not sure if that is so via VGA) Nonetheless, i have my Planus connected to my Nintendo Switch and PC via its VGA port and they look amazing! You get an aliasing free image, rich colour and its 60hz lag free; yes via the VGA port they bypass the processing and spit out a 60hz image! (these sets are 100hz models). Pairing the device with a scaler (im using the Crestron HD-scaler) to connect my HDMI devices to the TV with no noticable lag. Playing Zelda TotK start to finish, and looking forward to Super Mario RPG remake! Also, watching any widescreen content, especially sports via your streaming subscription is just amazing.

Without watching the video I would say my preferred CRT form factor is the traditional 4:3 cylindrical Trinitron. Better than the "fishbowl", but not flat enough to feel too 2000s for 5th gen gaming and older but still looks great with 6th gen. I get the praise that the flat sets tend to get but it's not for me when it comes to playing SNES/N64 and such. The magic just isn't quite there. The fishbowl TV I find it to be a good experience for light gun games and is my favourite type of TV to use for light gun games (at the larger sizes).

if you're going to poke around inside of a CRT, just remember to get an appropriate tool or combination of tools to adequately short the high voltage anode plug on the tube so you can discharge it. Also avoid touching any of the large capacitors until you can confirm that it has a resistor in the circuit to bleed them off. Capacitors can sometimes hold a charge for a lot longer than you'd expect, though a lot of more modern sets include bleed resistors in their circuits so the capacitors can be drained after a few minutes to hours of being unplugged. If you intend to do any adjustments while it's powered on, like it would need to be for any of the focus and alignment ring adjustments or any of the intensity and keystone adjustments using the pots on the control board, then you're just going to have to accept the risk and try to avoid touching anything while you're grounded. You could also use plastic tools to help mitigate risk to yourself. There's a surprising amount of resources on youtube about basic CRT servicing.
