How to Calculate Molar Mass (Molecular Weight)
Finding molar mass (also called molecular weight, molecular mass, and gram formula mass) is an essential skill in chemistry. All my content organized at www.Breslyn.org (and get all my free chem video guides)!
There are three steps to finding the molar mass for a compound:
Steps 1 - Find the atomic mass of each element.
Step 2 - Multiple the atomic mass of each element by its subscript. No subscript means it is “1”.
Step 3 - Add up all masses and add units (grams/mole or g/mol).
---
Supporting videos (complete explanations):
HCl: • Molar Mass / Molecular...
O2: • Molar Mass / Molecular...
Ca(NO3)2: • Molar Mass / Molecular...
Al2(SO4)3: • Molar Mass / Molecular...
MgSO4 - 7H2O: • Molar Mass / Molecular...
---
A few things to consider when finding the molar mass for:
- make sure you have the correct chemical formula.
- always include the units for molecular weight (grams/mole).
- make sure you do the math right - follow the order of operations.

Being able to find the molar mass for a compound is extremely important , especially for mole to gram conversions.

Hydrogen is 1.008 not 1.01 on the periodic table
@wbreslyn
5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the periodic table you are using. Many have H as 1.00794 and would consider 1.008 in correct. The periodic table I use rounds to two decimal places. It's always best to use the table your teacher or employer recommends! --- Dr. B
@mistermoonjelly
4 жыл бұрын
When you round up 1.008 you'll have 1.01. The periodic table my PreAP Chem class had 1.01 and my AP periodic table hand out had 1.008. I'm assuming they're both correct.
Concise and clear. Top notch! The world is a better place because you are on it! Thank you!
