This was a very timely video for me. I'm just at the beginning of my cargo bike journey, and this video gave me a lot to consider. I don't have a dedicated cargo bike shop in town, but there are a few great bike shops in town. Originally, I had been looking at some of the direct-to-consumer bikes, but as I consider maintenance and test-riding, I'm reconsidering that.

Always sage advice. Thank you for keeping it real. Good cargo bikes are game changing, and it's worthwhile, as with all things in life, to buy something built to last.

Finally a decent video to point everyone to that asks me for advice on which cargo bike to buy. Really appreciate you highlighting the certification consideration as even major suppliers are not cerified still (looking at you Shimano). Thank you!

All solid advice! In addition to looking at the warranty and certifications on DTC cargo bikes, I advise people to buy a model that can be assembled and checked by an authorized dealer who will also service the bike's warranty if needed. I'm personally not willing to take a total "DIY" approach to something that will be carrying precious cargo.

True. Mail order carries a lot of risk. No certification is a definite no.

What do I need?... What do I want🤫... Ok, my little Quickhaul does almost everything I need whether groceries, hardware runs, fishing or just a ride to some favourite cafes.

I swap characters often too, but the UL certification you mean is 2271 for batteries. Cargo e-bikes are truly wonderful, though mine has been down for a week since the valve stem broke off the tread tube while topping up its pressure after I got a small nail through it. Took the opportunity to give the rear wheel, brake caliper and cogs a good cleaning. I should get the Tannus Armour kit today.

there's this trend in europe where there's cheapo cargo bikes from china or like those more popular fat bikes that could dub as a cargo bike, all 2 yrs warranty because it's required by law. only really good brands provide lifelong frame warranty for example or something longer than 2 yrs. you really explained nicely how the purpose of your bike is going to alter your choice. i wish i had thought about this a little bit better. i don't have a cargo bike, i do have a fat bike. but i think with all of the things i've done to it to turn it into a cargo bike, i might as well have bought one lol

It may benefit you to have them in a trailer but the Tern HSD and Quick Haul both have a dog carrier system. I think the rad wagon does too! How well trained are they?

Bicycles, ebikes, electric cargo bicycles, robo taxis and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel. Reduced transportation costs and fossil fuels free transportation. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing SAFE, PROTECTED BIKE LANES and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school, ride for health or ride for fun. Children should be able to ride a bicycle to school without having to dodge cars and trucks. Separated and protected bike lanes are required. It will also make the roads safer for automobile drivers. Transportation planners and elected officials need to encourage people to walk, bike and take public transportation. Healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. In the future cities will be redesigned for people not cars. Crazy big parking lots will be transformed with solar canopies generating free energy from the sun.

Heavily biased against DTC bikes. There are many of us who are using these ‘cheap’ bikes that don’t rely on proprietary Bosch systems. The oldest members in our Facebook group have been using theirs for the last 4-5 years. So it is absolutely not true that DTC bikes are only meant to last 1-2 years. I swear there’s so much elitism amongst the Bosch user base. Not everyone wants to be locked in to your system.

No Bosch elitism here. Just want safe products that folks are prepared when they buy. Thrilled to hear someone has had their bike for so long! Would love to hear more about it as it’s not common without a lot of DIY or shop time. I’ve worked on hundreds of cargo bikes and ensuring folks are getting safe and reliable products is the goal here. If another system is available in the US with good customer service and replacement parts, I’m all ears. Hopefully some from Europe will take note of our growth and setup shop here.

this is true for some people. but if you do buy into a system, Bosch is probably the least problematic. some people dont mind spending a lot of money and just having the bike shop take care of everything. this can be finacially justified when replacing a car. my personal view is you should either get a premium bike with a bosch system, or get a decent non electric bike and install a conversion kit. the other DTC offerings, especially budget, have too many problems and are difficult to repair. and good luck finding parts

Alright, back off. Bosch make a quality product. The cheaper ones are cheap for a reason. They pump out the cheap rubbish.

@@cgi2173 people also need to consider the value of the item after a few years. the cheap ebike that you pay 2k for will be almost worthless after a few years when it breaks. the premium bosch system bike might be devalued a grand or so but probably provided a better ride and less problems. so the true costs are probably pretty similar, but just a higher initial investment for the bosch. and not ending up in a landfill is a also huge plus
