Here's a quick explainer video for you about how to buy very short-dated US Treasurys, known as T-bills, directly from the US Treasury using the TreasuryDirect website.
As you know if you’re a regular viewer on this channel,I’ve been making a lot of noise recently now that T-bills are offering yields around 5%.
That’s a very big development, as investors who are concerned about today’s financial markets now have somewhere safe to park their capital, keep it relatively liquid, AND get paid a decent return on it.
That hasn’t been the case for a long time.
1 year T-bill yields have been at record lows for much of the past decade, down near 0% for many years. The last time they were this high was 2006.
And with the inflation rate, as measured by CPI, falling - it may not be very long before T-bills offer a positive real return when adjusted for inflation. Again, that hasn’t been the case for a very long time.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had investors tell me “I’m too spooked by the turbulence of today’s uncertain markets. If I could just find a safe place to get a 4 to 5% return on my money for the time being, I’d be thrilled.”
Well, that’s now possible given where short term yields are.

We give you strategies for financial security, practical answers to questions like “how to grow my investments?”, and effective solutions for wealth building tailored to 'regular' investors just like you.
There’s no doubt that it's a very challenging time right now for the average investor. Above and beyond the recent economic impacts of COVID, the new era of record low interest rates, runaway US debt and US deficits, and trillions of dollars in monetary and fiscal stimulus stimulus has changed the rules of investing by dangerously distorting the Dow index, the S&P 500, and nearly all other asset prices. Can prices keep rising, or is there a painful reckoning ahead?
Let us help you prepare your portfolio just in case the future brings one or more of the following: inflation, deflation, a bull market, a bear market, a market correction, a stock market crash, a real estate bubble, a real estate crash, an economic boom, a recession, a depression, or another global financial crisis.

Save a particular amount for investing if you want to receive dividends, personally I have my interest set on key sectors based on performance and projected growth and that is where I put all my money. I actually bought my third house from my portfolio ranging from the renewable energy, tech alongside crypto .

Wow, very intriguing! Currently, I am looking for investment ideas or recommendations. Earlier this year, I hesitated and did not take any action till now. However, I am motivated to try something new because I am quite open to other investing opportunities. I want to retire in my forties or fifties. I sincerely hope I can achieve what you've accomplished so far.

Yes to learning about buying and selling T-bills through brokerage accounts!
Thank you so much, Adam. I'm a 30 year old electrician with minimal knowledge in the finance world. Through your channel I'm learning so much about my options so I can eventually have an intelligent conversation with an advisor and do something productive with my savings. Such good information, please keep it coming!

This was the most concise explanation I have seen. I sent it to some folks that wanted to put some savings into 1 year bank CDs.
I would be interested in a future video explaining how to invest in the longer term Treasury notes and bonds. Thank you!
Most certainly would like to see more of these related videos. It’s great to see videos of substance instead of vague speculation.
Thank you for this video. Please do another one for buying and selling T bills from your brokerage account .

I have been purchasing t bills for a while, but it is good to hear the review from the expert.
It’s way easier through Fidelity. You can put an order in and buy at auction. Or you can buy on the secondary market, for a slight discount, but lots of options for structuring ladders. And if you want or need to sell, it is easy to do. If you want to sell from Treasury Direct, you have to transfer the T bill to a broker.
Thank you Adam. Please do more videos addressing all the areas you mentioned in this video asking if there was interest. Thank you for helping us regular folks.

I tell them that you present a broad range of relevant topics in a sound and sober, non-hyped-up way. Your guests are varied and interesting. Always appreciated. Thanks.
Adam what you do better than the other macro channels is give individual investors precisely what they need! Great video!
Thanks Adam for another fine tutorial on keeping our money engaged risk free towards a substantial offset of inflation. Keep up the great work !!
I've used Treasury Direct for a long time. I have just recently started buying T-bills again after a 15 year hiatus. I like the 4 week T-bill making 4.5% for only tying up my money for a month. If I want more I will just roll it into another 4 week t bill when it matures and keep doing it over and over at each maturity date.

Adam, this was awesome. It is a simple process but we always want to make sure that we are doing the right thing when it comes to our money or should I say currency. Thank you.
Thank you for this tutorial. Many times things seem a lot more difficult than they are, and this tutorial is very effective in breaking down the simplicity of it!
Thank you for your explanation! For a short video, it is easy to understand and very helpful for brand new investors.
I was googling how to do this over the weekend after watching the last couple of episodes if wealthion…..thanks adam
Thank you, Adam. Nice quick video. T-Bills make sense right now, but as time goes by, longer duration may become more interesting, so bond ladder tutorial would be very useful. I would suggest few topics of interest (1) Bond ladders, i-bonds, T-bills etc. for short-term expense funds and emergency funds (2) Risk/benefits of different paper gold options and difference with physical gold (3) retirement tax optimization (RMD, SS, healthcare, etc) and withdrawal strategies (4) Estate planning, LLC/PLC, C-corp for investment activities. BTW, I watch all your videos, they are excellent and very impressed by both the pairs at RIA and New Harbor as they make lot more sense than all others on financial media.
Appreciate all your channel offers, especially when you educate your audience. Would love to see more content like this. Will continue to watch all the guest Rock Stars your have on your show :D))
Thank you for explaining in simple terms and with clarity. Much appreciated!

I've had money in T-bills but my friends say it's not safe and the government could default and I'd lose my money. I say if the government defaults, the money in my T-bill account is the least of our problems. How safe are T-bills?

Thank you for posting this explainer video. Decided to try it today, and was very straightforward albeit clunky once I was logged in to the system. Had a few unanswered questions, but they will be resolved in the coming months after doing a trial run. Thank you again.
This is great to send to both my parents and adult children..... Thank you.
Thank you so much. I didn't have a clear understanding of the discount/interest and how that worked.
Extremely Helpful! Thanks Adam! Please continue to do more of these 101 videos, can you do one on purchasing Treasury Bonds, or is that the same thing as T Bills?
Thanks for posting this. I would rather see Americans invest in the American government's financial future and security, rather than foreign governments. Americans should own America and the US government should only be indebted to its citizens. I started doing this recently and I don't plan to stop.
Thank you for this information. Very helpful.

Yes of course we want to know about notes and bonds as well. This great and exactly what I needed because I was about to do this through my broker and the way he explained it was going to involve some counterparty risk. Let's face it. If the Treasury goes broke, we are all dead meat no matter where our money is. So this is great!
Thank you….. I was just on the government site 4/5 years ago. No clue but now I understand. Keep teaching us.
Yes keep doing video like this please 👍🏿. I’m not Financial education, but trying to grasp all information I can.
More of these please!!! Sent to my family super easy how to😊
Thanks so much, this kind of tutorial is fantastic. Getting a basically guaranteed 5% yield is very attractive for those of us who find the current crazy market too risky to invest in. Some people object, "But what if the government defaults?" Well, if we reach that point, we've all got bigger problems than not getting the interest back on our loans... Wealthion continues to put out lots of great content.
Great video Adam. I would love to see a video on Bonds as well. Thank you for all you do for us investors. Though your channel I have learned so much. Thank you sir!

Deadly stuff thanks Adam, just what I wanted to find out more about as it is daunting to someone new to this. I would definitely appreciate the explanation on t bills through a brokerage account.
Adam Taggart is a genuine good guy. It is so difficult to find financial advice online that you can trust. Adam delivers. In my opinion, investing in T-Bills whether it is through Treasury Direct or a broker is the only sensible thing to do with your money for now.

@@Wealthion I'm a little confused on the Auction Query page about the Price per $100 column @11.10. If you purchased $100 at a 4% yield wouldn't you be charged $96 or is my math off somewhere? My first purchase goes through on 3/21 so maybe I'll have my answer then.

The annual yield was around 4.5%, but the maturity in his example is only 4 weeks. That comes out to around 0.35% of the face value of the (4-week) T-bill. That's 4 weeks in a ~52-week year. In the video, the longer duration bills get "cheaper" (meaning, the amount you earn from that individual T-bill is more because the government needs to borrow your money for longer).

Thanks for your show re ‘Buy T-Bills direct from the treasury’. More info in this area (Bonds and Notes as well as anything in the PersonalFinance area) is a great help to those of us ‘semi-literates’ trying to educate ourselves after a woefully lacking public education.
Such a great concise and easy to understand video! Did it! Thank you!
ONE MISTAKE IN VIDEO: You do NOT have to put your order in the afternoon before the auction. Treasury auctions are at 11:00 am and you can order that same morning before the auction starts. I have done this many times. Also worth noting, you do not have to have funds in your account (at Treasury OR bank) on the day of the auction. Funds must only be there on the issue date.
Thank you- great information. Very useful explanation, concise, simple and actionable.
Thanks for the video Adam! One question that I have is what if you want to make multiple purchases? For example, multiple auctions with different durations on the same date, do you select the first auction type, amount, and confirm - then will it go back to the start page for selection and repeat? Am preparing for an upcoming auction (first time purchase) and was wondering...
Been using TD for 8 years to avoid a broker being the custodian of our asset. If you buy longer term maturities and need to liquidate, it can take 45-60 days now versus 2 weeks back a few years ago. Say you have a 10 or 30 year bond that you want to liquidate, you can have it sent to your broker and in our case TD Ameritrade ( now Schwab) can do that sale for damn near nothing in 1-2 days once they hold the bond. P.S.: You cannot purchase a zero coupon bond through T D
Thank you, very well explained
