How To Buy T-Bills Direct From the US Treasury | Adam Taggart

SCHEDULE YOUR FREE PORTFOLIO REVIEW with Wealthion's endorsed financial advisors at www.wealthion.com
Here's a quick explainer video for you about how to buy very short-dated US Treasurys, known as T-bills, directly from the US Treasury using the TreasuryDirect website.
As you know if you’re a regular viewer on this channel,I’ve been making a lot of noise recently now that T-bills are offering yields around 5%.
That’s a very big development, as investors who are concerned about today’s financial markets now have somewhere safe to park their capital, keep it relatively liquid, AND get paid a decent return on it.
That hasn’t been the case for a long time.
1 year T-bill yields have been at record lows for much of the past decade, down near 0% for many years. The last time they were this high was 2006.
And with the inflation rate, as measured by CPI, falling - it may not be very long before T-bills offer a positive real return when adjusted for inflation. Again, that hasn’t been the case for a very long time.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had investors tell me “I’m too spooked by the turbulence of today’s uncertain markets. If I could just find a safe place to get a 4 to 5% return on my money for the time being, I’d be thrilled.”
Well, that’s now possible given where short term yields are.

We offer exceptional interviews and explainer videos that dive deep into the trends driving today's markets, the economy, and your own net worth. We give you strategies for financial security, practical answers to questions like “how to grow my investments?”, and effective solutions for wealth building tailored to 'regular' investors just like you.
There’s no doubt that it's a very challenging time right now for the average investor. Above and beyond the recent economic impacts of COVID, the new era of record low interest rates, runaway US debt and US deficits, and trillions of dollars in monetary and fiscal stimulus stimulus has changed the rules of investing by dangerously distorting the Dow index, the S&P 500, and nearly all other asset prices. Can prices keep rising, or is there a painful reckoning ahead?
Let us help you prepare your portfolio just in case the future brings one or more of the following: inflation, deflation, a bull market, a bear market, a market correction, a stock market crash, a real estate bubble, a real estate crash, an economic boom, a recession, a depression, or another global financial crisis.

It’s way easier through Fidelity. You can put an order in and buy at auction. Or you can buy on the secondary market, for a slight discount, but lots of options for structuring ladders. And if you want or need to sell, it is easy to do. If you want to sell from Treasury Direct, you have to transfer the T bill to a broker.

If I want more I will just roll it into another 4 week t bill when it matures and keep doing it over and over at each maturity date.

Thank you, Adam. Nice quick video. T-Bills make sense right now, but as time goes by, longer duration may become more interesting, so bond ladder tutorial would be very useful. I would suggest few topics of interest (1) Bond ladders, i-bonds, T-bills etc. for short-term expense funds and emergency funds (2) Risk/benefits of different paper gold options and difference with physical gold (3) retirement tax optimization (RMD, SS, healthcare, etc) and withdrawal strategies (4) Estate planning, LLC/PLC, C-corp for investment activities. BTW, I watch all your videos, they are excellent and very impressed by both the pairs at RIA and New Harbor as they make lot more sense than all others on financial media.

The annual yield was around 4.5%, but the maturity in his example is only 4 weeks. That comes out to around 0.35% of the face value of the (4-week) T-bill. That's 4 weeks in a ~52-week year. In the video, the longer duration bills get "cheaper" (meaning, the amount you earn from that individual T-bill is more because the government needs to borrow your money for longer).

ONE MISTAKE IN VIDEO: You do NOT have to put your order in the afternoon before the auction. Treasury auctions are at 11:00 am and you can order that same morning before the auction starts. I have done this many times. Also worth noting, you do not have to have funds in your account (at Treasury OR bank) on the day of the auction. Funds must only be there on the issue date.

Been using TD for 8 years to avoid a broker being the custodian of our asset. If you buy longer term maturities and need to liquidate, it can take 45-60 days now versus 2 weeks back a few years ago. Say you have a 10 or 30 year bond that you want to liquidate, you can have it sent to your broker and in our case TD Ameritrade ( now Schwab) can do that sale for damn near nothing in 1-2 days once they hold the bond. P.S.: You cannot purchase a zero coupon bond through T D
