Best way of avoiding taxi scam it not taking a taxi... Istanbul has a huge taxi problem and it is becoming more serious every year. Personally, I am not taking taxi, instead of that I am just walking, taking public trasnaportation or rent a car. Other cities in Turkey don't have that problem. In Ankara especially taxi drivers are very helpful and kind.

In my knowledge, in Istanbul, credit cards are still not accepted at public transportation. Hope it will change soon!

1. You can buy it only in turkey. There are istanbulcard machines all around. 2. Multiple people can use 1 card.

Thank you for this very informative explanation. I have a question: which button should we use to navigate to purchasing a 10-pass card on the screen of the biletmatik machine? I see there is a button to buy a 1 Pass Card in the video at @2:40 but I wonder how we can get to buying a 10-pass card? If you have some guidance on this, it will be very much appreciated.

Some machines have that 10 pass card and some dont. Still, i advise getting an istanbul card. It is only 2$ and it pays off in the long-term.

When I buy Istanbulkart, can I insert lets say 100tl, so 50tl is for card, and another 50tl is for top up, no need to scan card again?

There are two machines: 1. The old machines (shorter than newer ones) can't give change back. These machines automatically top up 50TL if you give 100TL. 2. The new machines (they are taller and blue colored) can give change back. The machine asks you if you wanna top up or if you want change back.

You can use one card for multiple people. However, when you use it for multiple people, you cant take advantage from reduced prices in the 2nd or 3rd public transport in 2 hours. Top up doesnt have expired time.

Yes you can! However, there is max 500TL usage limit per card. Under that usage, you can do whatever you want.

Yellow taxi is the cheapest. Usually it costs 400-600TL from airport to city center

hi. i have some questions regarding istanbulkart use: 1- does all the rides cost the same if i use bus/metro or ferry? regardless of the distance? 2- consequently a trip to the princes' island by ferry will cost the same if i start from besiktas or from eminomu? 3- i have read on a website that transferring from an island to another is free, is this info right? 4- i can't access the iett website to get informations about the ferries schedule. is there another site where i can find the schedules? TIA

1. Depends on the distance. It is not same in all transportation methods. 2. Yes, it costs the same from besiktas or eminonu 3. No it is not free. You need to use your card again to take the ferry. 4. Hello, Thanks for uploading this very informative video. I read some comment online that Istanbul kart as of June 1st 2023 has New rules for tourists. Every ride on the Marmaray is now 21.9 TL. However far you go. Buses and trams 9.9 TL and no refunds for tourists or cheaper fares within a time limit. Can you verify if this is indeed the case? We are a family of 5 travelling to Istanbul in August, and if fares are not discounted on subsequent rides anymore than it would be pointless getting a card for each of us.

I have recently have come back from my trip to Istanbul and I can confirm that this is the case. No discounts for tourists. Also there is a limit to how much you can load onto the card. After 500 TL, you are unable to load anymore, you are forced to purchase a new IstanbulKart for 70 TL.

How many times do I have to touch when I get on/ off from the 1st transfer (tram) to the 2nd transfer like Metro?

It doesn't have an expiration date. You can use it as long as there is sufficient fund inside for transportation. You can top up at any station.

why you didn't use the prepaid pass Card... which gives access to public transportation for 1 or 3 kullanimlik pass or more ?! I don't know if those are per ride or per day pass?

They are per-ride pass. Istanbulcard is the most convenient and budget option.

Yes, you can. However, in istanbul there are some transfer points where you need to change the metro. At these places, you need to use your card to pay again. If you use same card, discount applies to only one person.

If there is a balance remaining , is it refunded?

It might be refunded at IETT service points, but it might take so much time. My suggestion would be to minimize the balance before leaving Turkey and selling the card to a friend or someoneelse.

How much years it is valid?

It doesnt have a validity date. It is valid until the municipality decides to change the whole systeö.

To be honest, I am not sure. The card design change but the chips probably didnt change. If you need to buy a new one, it is only 50 TL (2 USD). So, dont worry much, new card is quite cheap if the old one doesnt work :)

You can use the machine's in the metro to top up money and check your balance. They dont ask for ID numbers.

No, 50 TL is the card fee only. You need to top up on top of this amount.

Get one card and put around 200-300TL. Use it for yourself and for your son. Take the havaist bus to aksaray, then take tram to sultanahmet.

You buy the card for 50TL. It comes with 0 balance. Then, you need to top up to have money inside the card. If you are gonna change lots of transportation and if you are gonna stay for a long time, I would advise getting separate card for each family member.

It is up to you. Note that when you use one card, you can't get advantage from lower prices when you do transit. You will decide when you try it first day to buy more card or not
