How to Buy A Sawmill 😬😬😬 Lessons Learned Frontier Sawmills
How to buy a sawmill? What sawmill do I need? Watch this before buying a sawmill! That is a question which should go through each potential sawyer's mind. If you are like me, I have always wanted a sawmill from as far back as I can remember. The idea of cutting my own timber creating unique works of art out of the lumber I cut has always fascinated me. This was my driving force behind my purchase, but let us face it, sawmills are not cheap! On top of that, there are hundreds of different variations of sawmills with so many brands, that it is hard to keep up. I made this video in hopes of helping you achieve your dreams of owning a sawmill. Good Luck in your Journey.

Very informative video Tony. You answered a lot of questions i had. I'm gonna retire in a couple of years and hopefully I'll have me a sawmill. I'll be 62 years old but still have little Vigor in me. Wish me luck. As I've said before, your never too old to learn something new.

We have to learn to work smarter using equipment to make up for lack of physical ability. That is my plan. I will stop dreaming about what can be done when I am dead. And, maybe not then!

I really appreciate your comment. Tony
I just purchased a frontier Os23. Been watching your vids and enjoy them. I have 5 acres of really old timber to thin out and build some structures. I've been using a chainsaw mill but I'm 69 and it needs to go to the scrap metal pile. Have tractors and equipment to help. I'm sure I'll go thru a steep learning curve so I bought plenty of new bands with my order. Hope the mill gets here before the rains hit. I'm from Oregon so have many different variety of trees, but ceder is my fav. I'll be building a saw shed right off. Thanks for all your help and taking the time to video your journey.

We are cranking up the sawmill for some real use over the next two weeks. We are cutting the siding, roof purlins, and many other parts to our new barn. Big fun.
Really liked your delivery on what to look for when thinking of buying a mill. I am planning to moving North (Northern New England) for retirement. I currently drop a lot of trees for clients (side work, other wise I am on a PC 10 hrs. a day) and either take the wood for firewood keep & sell it or if its a trash tree it gets dumped. But, I have been thinking of getting into milling especially if I am moving North into the woods and retire into a new business of milling wood for special cutting for lumber used for timber framing, Post and Beam, Bar tops, table tops, wide panel flooring. You have provided some info I had not thought off regarding the mill. So thank you very much!

Go bigger! LOL. I have had good service out of the sawmill, but it could be bigger. I have had to turn down logs. The mill is just not big enough.
Thoroughly enjoy your channel. It’s super informative. I just recently purchased a tractor and a sawmill for my property. Can’t wait to try them both out. You also do videos with Hank Hamilton. He’s got a great channel as well. Thanks for all you do!

One thing to consider when placing the mill is to put the sawshed or mill just below a hill, so you have gravity on your side when rolling logs onto the mill

I have done two videos so far. I am releasing another one soon. Would buy the track extension with the sawmill because in my case I had to pay extra shipping when I bought it later. It is very hard to cut 8 ft boards as it comes from the factory. Very tight. With the extension it will do 8 and 10 ft boards with no issue.

will it handle seasoned yelloe pine and oak?
@TonysTractorAdventure

Yes it will. Yellow pine has sticky sap, so you will need to run soap in the water. Oak is easier to cut than pine. No sap.

Me and a friend just bought a frontier os31 on Monday should be here 4-6 weeks they said I am curious about the trailer and extensions I ordered the trailer and I am highly considering a trailer extension and track extension as well what is your experience on that from what I’ve read and heard the trailer is not that good I have also heard it tends to bend the track over long distance hauling with the sawmill with the extensions our mill is not going to be hauled very much on the road mostly wooded areas how long have you had your frontier and are you satisfied with it have you had any serious problems and was customer service good for you The lady we talk to was awesome when purchasing
@TonysTractorAdventure
3 жыл бұрын
I am very satisfied with my OS23. I have not had any issues at all other than the ones I cause. I popped a rivet on the door latch. Easy enough fix. As for the trailer, I bought the tractor extension and built my own trailer out of 22 ft long tube, so I can't answer the trailer part.

I will say this, the one guy on KZread saying the holes were miss drilled put his mill together backwards. He was just not man enough to say he did it wrong, and only the people who own one understands he is wrong. A mill will be one of the most complicated things most people assemble. From what I see, Frontier is well built.

Do they all shake side to side while cutting as this one does? Or just the cheapies? This looks similar to the chinese made woodland mills

I have not owned them all. It is a violent act of ripping a log into. It does flex side to side. I was surprised when I received it and it said, made in China.

How much did your sawmill cost?
@TonysTractorAdventure

Kenneth, I am not sure how much they cost now. Frontier Sawmills list their price on their website.
Why don't you do a Humbolt undercut? That puts the waste of the undercut on the stump and not on your log.

@bobwilkinson1217

@@TonysTractorAdventure On a big butt log you lose some board feet on the log. Put the undercut on the stump and your butt log will be flush on the butt end after it falls. We do that in the Northwest -- Oregon and Washington.
