How to buy a private island | Sam Beckbessinger | TEDxCapeTown

If you have ever wanted to find out how you can save enough money to buy a private island or anything else you want, Sam can show you how. Sam Beckbessinger is a writer, user-experience designer and entrepreneur who is on a quest to help the emerging middle class understand how to take charge of their finances. Author of ‘Manage Your Money Like a F*cking Grown Up’, she is also a co-founder of Lettuce, an app that wants to make managing your money as simple as making toast. She also lectures extensively on personal finances and designing for behaviour change, and writes for television. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

So at 68 yo. I come from an era when this was not a thing. I'd like to now press the reboot button to get things right the second to time around. I've learned a few things to add to this . 1. One must learn early in life the difference between earning money and making money ie entrepreneurs make money employees earn money. 2 entrepreneurs are taxed on taxable profits .. (t.o less expenses ) . Employees pay tax... period. 3. For sucessful entrepreneurs the service /product is the end goal. The money follows as a consequence. 4. There is good debt and bad debt. 5. Ideally one should play with other people's many. To close .. Entrepreneurship is a skill, a life choice and a passion. It's the milk in the bottle. Compound interest is the cream. But as Steve Jobs so famously said at the end of his life ..personal relationships are infinitely more important than making money. So in the end it is more enjoyable to be broke in the company of loved ones than owning an island.

Great talk! Also, best book I ever read on how money works in our lives, and how we unwittingly opt out of our big, bold audacious dreams by spending our money on things we think we need.

I liked the 480 times to choose what to do with your money. 65 is better than never, I guess.

Good luck finding a bank that will give you a 6% interest rate. Something else that should be considered is inflation for the 40 year timeframe in developing that savings account, there's no guarantee that island or any comparable island will be that price in 40 years. I'm not arguing with the point of this TED Talk, I actually enjoyed it and agree compound interest is a "magical thing", it drives the separation of wealth that makes the rich richer and since money is a 0 sum game makes the poor poorer. Einstein had a quote about compound interest, but you'll need more than the understanding of it to earn from it, you need initial capital.
