How to Build Your Own Fishing Rod

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There are many reasons to build your own rod, the most obvious of which is that you can craft one to your exact specifications. Gone are the days of “you can get any color you want, as long as it’s black,” with blanks coming in a dizzying array of colors. Most manufacturers sell their rods in blank-only form, so you don’t need to abandon your beloved tapers to go the custom route. With the judicious application of a triangular file, you can cut the blank down to your preferred length. There’s nothing like catching a fish on a rod you’ve built.

This was a great video. I like that it had really good up-close shots in the video with good angles etc. Each step in the process put in text on the screen. But there was one con in my opinion, and this is just my opinion. No hate at all. I learn best ( and I’m sure tons of others do also ) by hearing someone talk. Talking out the steps etc. like I said great video but I would have liked for the music to had not been there and the person talking out the process and the steps. Just my opinion. Like I said no hate what so ever. I’ve been wanting to get into custom Rod making. I make custom Bass jigs, jig heads, and soft plastics already. I would enjoy nothing more than to make my own custom Rod and catch my PB on it. Then maybe make some to sale as a hobby. Great video though. If you make another maybe no music or less music. I hope this doesn’t offend you in anyway. Anyways amazing work and killer Rod! Tight Lines! 🎣🎣👍🏻👍🏻

You got me thinking Fernando. So I checked out a couple of my bought rods to see how they are spaced. Stiff 6.5ft rod for casting lures with a baitcaster reel. Spacing From the tip- 10cm, 11, 12, 14, 14, 15.5, 22.5, 38cm to reel. The eye closest to the reel is still quite small as it is intended for use with a baitcaster. Light flexible 7ft rod that I use with a spinning reel for bait fishing. Spacing From the tip - 9.5cm, 11, 13, 16.5, 20, 25, 30, 50cm to the front of the reel. The eye closes to the reel is about 2.5cm diameter as it is used with a spinning reel. These numbers look a tittle arbitrary however they seems to a logarithmic or hyperbolic progression going on. I think you need to get your blank, see how it bends, maybe trace it out out and then sketch some lines out to see how the line needs to run to keep a fairly natural bend in the rod.

  • @strayedcat1966

Placement of guides is extremely important! With the reel for this rod mounted in the reel seat, hold the rod butt with a rod holder in a vice. Then pull the rod by the tip guide to distinguish where it curves, mark the blank where the bends are and you feel the guides should be. Now tape the guides (temporarily) on your marks and put the line through them. This will let you see how the line will flow. Attach a weight to load/tension the line/rod in an arc so you visualize how the guides are aligned. You want to keep the line as parallel to the rod as possible without large angled gaps. The larger the angle between guides causes more contact (friction) and could actually cause your rod to break, especially when high sticking or setting the hook. You can move (re-tape) the guides as necessary. More guides are needed on the rod where it bends most. The first stripper guide should be placed in such a way that the line as it rotates off the spool (when casting) is not too close (causing wind knots) or too far (causing line/rod slap). Also the stripper guide needs to be sized appropriately for the spool size, so as not to cause excessive resistance but still control the flow. The second and third guides also must calm the line rotation and placed accordingly to do so. (It would be most helpful to take a video of this in order to observe it closely.) The guides should not be just placed so they look good or evenly spaced, but actually where they are needed, only. You want as few as possible to keep weight down and the rod balanced. A fast action rod will need more guides closer together at the top where it bends most, versus a medium action rod where the guides would be spaced farther apart, but still keeping the line parallel along the arc. Fore grips and butt grips are also important as well and are a personal matter as how the rod will be utilized and can help to balance the rod with reel mounted so it is comfortable in use. Finding the strong spline or spine is also important and aligning the reel seat appropriately for spinning or casting rod accordingly. If a rod is assembled off spline it will not cast accurately and will twist (torque) when fighting a fish. It is especially realized with heavier rods, fighting large strong fish. This description is for spinning rods. Casting or conventional rods are a different ball game and guides need to be placed in order to prevent the line from contacting the blank under load, and still kept parallel as possible. Hopefully this helps and is comprehensible. I was taught by a master many years ago. Rod building is truly an art as well as a science. Almost all production rods are not built properly or correctly as it is just too time consuming and assemblers are not knowledgeable.

If you want a custom rod from a custom builder it will likely cost around $500 so if you are buying from a custom rod builder then yes, it will be cheaper. If you aren't looking for custom, a high end rod from st croix will likely be a bit cheaper. When building your own rod, you are generally looking at about $275-$300 if you are using quality materials.

Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup kzread.infoUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

Probably not that much. The cheapest blank I found was a 5' fiberglass blank at $18. Add about $5 for the rod guide, $5 for the epoxy, $2 for the guide thread and $10 for a reel seat. Now add the cost of purchasing a reel and fishing line. Not to mention the few hundred you need to buy the proper rod-building equipment (dryer and tools)...unless you plan to MacGyver the crap out of the tools and machinery you'll need.
