Without knowing it, I have always been hip flexor dominant. Thanks for helping me to see it.

Great video! I have recently realized that I have been overworking my hip flexors on my ab workouts and a few other exercises which unfortunately lead to an injury. I'm definitely going to try this variation.

Adam, I totally agree with you all on this. I tend to swing a little and use momentum when doing (weighted) knee raises. However, would you agree that even though there's a swing in my knee raises and I'm using some momentum, I can still build my abs when I bring my knees up high enough (so I still get that critical abs contraction at the top end of the swing)? That's how I feel about it. When people who have never trained abs before start training them, they might not be able to perform even a single knee raise. I think using a little momentum (especially) in the beginner's phase is not entirely wrong. However, I also agree that slow and controlled (abs) movement can create even greater results.

Jeremia Refos sure ... although I generally tend to teach no momentum and control until I feel my client has a complete understanding of what we're trying to accomplish from this movement . We also want to avoid encouraging a bad recruitment pattern. More than 80% of the clients I trained in my career were hip flexor dominant. SO , swinging the legs ballistically may still work their abs but it's not advantageous.

Pro tip Adam: put a pad on that lower bar, like the one you put on the squat bar to protect your neck and shoulders. It will protect your lower back from digging into that bar, less pain; more gain.
