How to Build/Modify RTA Cabinets! Ep. 13

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey Gang. Today's video is pretty straight forward, we're building all of our RTA cabinets so that way when drywall goes up, we can throw these bad boys up and put them where we want immediately. Building cabinets is pretty relaxing, put some music or a podcast on, and get to building! Thanks for watching, we'll see ya in the next one!

Hey gang, if you're looking for this brand of RTA cabinets, contact quavana.com to see if they can assist you. They are located in Houston and are our regional distributor. We order our cabinets from Triple Eight Stone in Baton Rouge (225-223-0855) on Airline Highway near Sherwood Forest. Thanks.

Hi Paul, first and foremost, thanks very much for sharing your skills and tips. I've been following you for months now. I called Quavana trying to see if I can buy RTA for my Dallas house. I was told I can only order from their catalog on their website, any custom stuff can not be done. Is this the same story with your Baton Rouge dealer Triple Eight Stone? Thanks much

Those aren't drywall screws, well, I hope they're not. Drywall screws are designed to snap off. They are not designed to handle weight as a fastener. I would swap them out if you suspect they are just drywall screws and use some stronger ones where they need to support weight.

The guys at work were saying they spent 30K for cabinets!!! My insurance gave me 30K less than any contractor wanted ! So I used there and did my kitchen for $2800!!!! THEY ARE AWESOME!!! Great video as usual!!

Craftsmanship ? Did I miss the part where he built the cabinets? I know the part using a table saw, track saw, tape measure, a cut list, plan, design? I am a custom cabinet builder so I get a little tense when nice guys with nice sons kind of act like they are cabinet builders? By the way machined dove tails made on a huge machine where an employee feeds the board pushes a button and Bam u got half bling , or thru DT? The plywood is MDF fill that’s the dark streak! And never ever use Sheetrock screws on a cabinet ? Why ? Not acceptable won’t pass your inspection if caught ? No sheer strength! Sorry cheap knock off foreign cabinets that he is making a huge profit on ! Looks great ? I replace them and the cheap hinges all the time! A little misleading! Look back where he says “I like the tight fit” the camera slides to the other side briefly and there is a huge gap!

Good call on those glide installs on the drawer. My home that I moved into had those screwed into the sides and not the bottom and they all (100% of drawers) had those screws fail (strip out/split) within 2 years of moving in. I reinstalled by screwing into the bottom and haven't had a problem since.

Except that he needs to show 100% respect. When his Dad tries to show him something, he tells him to 'focus on the camera'. He wouldn't have tried to correct him if he didn't think there was a problem. Also when the son tries to prove to commenters about his awesome screw gun talent, he bounces it off the cabinet twice, that could have been a disaster at a different time. These videos aren't to show how COOL you think you are. They are just educational and really good too. So respect your Dad and there is a difference between COCKINESS and CONFIDENCE

Thanks so much for the great tutorial. The logical flow and precision of the vid is excellent. I noticed the 3" offset at the door opening. Many people would just put a 30" cabinet on a 30 or 31" wall. The offset makes a nice aesthetic. When I use a full overlay cabinet I usually put a 1" filler at the wall. It's not necessary but I Iike the look. There are so many times a standard depth cabinet just doesn't work. I've never seen the process, a big help for brave souls willing to do the mod. Thanks again. Excellent.

Great job! On cabinets with water pipe (under sink), I prefer to use a bead of clear silicone caulk (tub & tile) around all the inside joints of the finished bottom of the cabinets. (Then after I leave, any future leaks won't be able to get into the end grain and ruin the wood.) Also do it on every inside & outside joint if it's an area with a lot of bugs... the wood can't move if there's humidity changes, but it completely seals the cabinets from water, bugs, dust, etc. (Like to put Borax under all lowers too... making sure there's no good place for bugs to live.)

  • @myopinion69420

This is exactly what I did when I did my kitchen. also used silicon to 'seal' the holes in the back and the cut-out for both the cooktop and sink (on a budget, so used a laminate benchtop) Also liked the idea of the cabinet under the sink being easier to clean, as I put in a pull out trash can under the sink. this way I don't have to worry about getting it to wet when cleaning it out.

I just bought RTA from RTA Wood Cabinets, based in NJ. The cabinets I ordered came out of Denver. I spent 41 yrs at UPS, these arrived packed in great shape on a pallet. The heaviest were on the bottom, there were corner guards and shrink wrapped super tight. They are solid wood, soft close doors, dove tails etc. I did a 10x10 foot kitchen for $3200 and that included shipping. The drawer bottoms are 3/8 thick ply, it will hold anything without breaking.

@@Big_Kool They were super easy. No woodworking experience required. The side pieces have a dove tail cut on them, they just slide into the dove tailed groove on the back of the face frames. Everything else is drilled and cut for you. There are grooves (dadoes) cut for the backs etc. I used glue in the slots, and extra long screws other than what they provided. I also put 45 degree blocks in each corner to strengthen them. I also used 18 gauge finish nails, or you could clamp them after gluing. Either way you can literally build a cabinet in 20 minutes. The drawers are the easiest ever, super simple yet effective.

You should be using a drill with a clutch. The 12 volt Milwaukee 2402-20 is the best tool for the job for several reasons. The biggest of which is that the clutch setting and drill driver setting are independent of each other. Every other manufacturer has the clutch setting and drill setting on the same adjustment ring. With the Milwaukee, you set your clutch for the job and then you can switch between drill and driver without changing your clutch setting.

That is a good design with nice anti-sag shelves... The wife and I are renovating a small house we rent out that pretty much got destroyed by the last tenants, just decided today to just rip the cupboards out as what was left that didn't need attention wasn't worth $30. It is always less work just ripping crapping out rather than trying to clean and fix around it, isn't it. Also saw some premade stuff at local retailers... will investigate more after seeing this.

Most cabinet shops don't use any glue when they assemble those cabinets. Even with drawers, they just hammer dovetails together and use finish nail gun. This was true for all cabinet suppliers I have used in the past. It probably is not as good, but seems to hold just fine.

One little "extra" that I always added in a kitchen remodel was a piece of white Formica or sheet vinyl flooring covering the inside bottom of the sink cabinet. If you look at a sink cabinet floor after 5-10 years, it is always a mess from the water and cleaning products that get on it. It's a cheap and easy fix for that. I would caulk the full perimeter with clear silicone. I used to do remodeling, but now I'm retired and I just watch you work. - Looking forward.

Back in 2017 I rebuilt my kitchen after a water leak ruined the cheap particle board contractor cabinets around the sink. I used RTA cabinets from Lilly Ann Cabinets. They came from Asia and had the clips. I wish I had seen this video first... Like the Quavana, the Lilly Ann cabinets were made form nice plywood and solids and had dovetailed drawers. No more particle board sponge to get wet and mold.

This particular joinery is designed to be glued but I am with you on adding glue! A small bead of construction adhesive along the shear panel (back panel) on ikea/particle board furniture really adds a lot of rigidity!

Hey Paul, I currently have a big ridgid r4512 tablesaw and was thinking of downsizing to the sawstop jobsite saw because I don’t need the big saw. I was wondering, how accurate do you consider that saw to be? Is the fence finicky to get aligned for every cut like the old jobsite saws?

Compliments! You are a heck of a teacher and a meticulous craftsman. Plus, you are really good with your boy. I'm always too hard on my son when he works with us. I think I figure he should know through osmosis, because he's always been around. Maybe I should slow down and explain things to him better. Thanks for that example.

I use 23 gauge nails to hold the dovetails together instead of glue. Much faster and they never come apart. They also make little metal brackets with 2 screws that work great on some drawers. I can assemble and install a small to medium kitchen in a day or two with me and 1 or 2 guys

If you are looking for a secure method of drilling holes for your shelving supports you might get a piece of scrap wood cut to the desired thickness so that it acts like a depth stop for the bit. Leave it on the bit as you drill each hole. No risk of blow through.

Awesome video. I know there are now guys out there who will not be afraid when they hear that the great price for the cabinets is because they have to assemble them their selves. Only one critique. When you put the drawer bottoms in, put at least a few little spots of glue in the Dados, just to keep the bottoms from rattling. Can't stand rattily drawers. Nice job Brother.

The only change I would make is instead of using the drywall screws go ahead and use stainless screws like Craig screws or one of the other stainless kind because they're way stronger. Especially for attaching face frames. If you use a number eight screw, I think that's what they are anyway, those are the best for face frames. Just need to hang them both level then screw together. Screw all bases together before installs. Usually like 2 in screws On uppers glue is sufficient, maybe 18 gauge nails also. For attaching to the walls, everyone should use stainless pan-head screws which are stout. They are probably simpson strong tie brand, star bit, 3" to 3.5" into the studs. Also there are shelf pin plunge bits at home depot or rockler for like 5 bucks to 20 bucks and it plunges to the set depth. Its got a spring on it.
