Recently built my first pedal kit, a big muff clone, and saw a lot of people saying a common mod is to change the clipping diodes for LEDs to take out some harshness. Thought I'd take a quick look at what the deal is with clipping diodes and came across this video, ended up watching a bunch of your videos over the past few days and honestly I feel like this channel is going to be invaluable as I learn more about building pedals. Thanks for all the hard work and free education, really appreciate it!

That's a pretty sad school if you didn't get a better education over the course of dozens of hours than you did with a short YT video 😂. I'm not disparaging the video, it's very well done. But that sounds like either hyperbole, or a massive waste of money on a school that should maybe be investigated lol

Hungary here, I just put my first Distortion+ together, Germanium diodes were not available at the time of the build, so I made them with silicons, and I love it, it has some sort of a gutteral gnarly voice, almost like fuzzyness. Possibly I just fucked the circuit up, but I love it

Watching from Long Island, NY. This is cool stuff. I’ve been wanting to get into pedal building for a while. Finally have my degree, lots of guitars, pedals, and test equipment. Subscribed. The germanium diodes, which I think you said turn on at really low voltages, would clip more (more square shaped and shorter) and further reduce output signal. My favorite clipping is whatever is in the Friedman BE-OD, which is probably op-amp power rails... I don’t remember seeing any diodes in there. There was a Metalzone mod that had me replace silicon diodes (1N4001’s I think) with red led’s. I liked the silicons better.

  • @blahblah4767

    @blahblah4767

    2 жыл бұрын

FYI, the BE-OD actually uses cascaded gain stages, where the first stage is a soft clipping stage with red LED's. The second stage is a soft clipping stage with silicon diodes, and the third is a hard clipping stage with red LED's again.

Now that you've explained them and I've listened, I think no diodes are my favorite. Just adjust the level and tone. Silicon was way too compressed. I guess they all have their place in a mix, but just listening to one alone I'd prefer the clarity of Op Amps only.

Hi, Jason! All diodes actually sounded fine. Would be nice to hear a tonal comparison where clipping amount is equal for all diodes. As we theoretically know at which voltage they clip, I think it is possible to calibrate input level for approx. equal amount of clipping. A test for different diodes (lets say silicons) to hear how much they sound different would be interesting too! I never done these tests myself, but tried different diodes to check how they affect the tone in a given pedal. Thank you for the interesting content!

Amazing, I just finished my basic Electra and I´m reading about "what do what" with the signal to start mods. I´m another class of engineer but I like electronics a lot. Thank you, now I can see more clearly the signal wave form and how it changes with some mods I want to do.

@@FuzzlordEffects Ok my Rangemaster is done!!!!!, PNP AC127... ...I started to build it in 2006 and I was so young and have no idea about electronics, over the years and most latelly I´ve been studing everything possible about electronics and transistors (how to set the bias over all) and well... ...my Rangemaster sounds great believe me (of course I´ve intalled a Bias control)... ...love it. Here in Venezuela little parts are impossible so buy (too, too expensive...) so I had to do a deep search in old devices.. ...if you could see how it looks horrible but beautiful, I didn´t sleep last night finishing the case...... ..I really love it... ...stange and beautiful, looks like a military device ;) ...As I say in other site, here in venezuela now is better to buy food tan a pot or a trimmer.. ..my engliish is not that good, sorry Saludos Fuzzlord

Every pedal that I have "made" up until now has used silicon diodes (for no other reason than the schematics/instructions told me to). I think tonally, I like the LED the best (although all fuzz rules). I have learned/understood more from this 16 min video than reading electronics books for the last year. The use of the oscilloscope really helped (can't wait to be able to afford one)! I love that you make and sell pedals, but are also cool enough to share your knowledge. Thanks a million, from Halifax, Nova Scotia!

Watching from Grand Rapids, MI. I normally prefer OpAmp clipping or silicone diodes, depending on the sound I am going for. I really enjoyed this breakdown of the diodes and how you explained them technically and in layman’s terms. I had always heard LEDs are less compressed but it was nice to hear (and see with the oscilloscope) why this happens.

Originally from Greece, currently living in Sweden . I have built a Green russian muff clone and experimented with various clipping options. My favourite is a combination of silicon and LED diodes (red). I wanna try out jfet clipping too. From what you demonstrated no clipping sounds best cause its the most "open" and loudest option. Thanks for the video , well explained !

Really nice video! Can you tell us why you specify the color of the diodes? And do you use current limiting resistors in this application? Thanks!

Boulder City Nevada here. Firstly, thank you for the cool video. Secondly, silicon is in the mud. Red LEDs, nice with some tremolo me thinks. Power clipping, where's the fun in that? Overall summary: Way mucho awesome! Good on you!

Thanks Jason - these videos are great! Watching from Marysville, WA. In this particular demo, I think I prefer no diodes. But having the options is so important for different guitars, amps, signal chain, etc. I'm trying to get my head around wiring a bypass switch (3P3T?) with an indicator LED, and would love to watch you explain that in detail. I think you showed/explained some of that in a recent pedal building video, in the last week or two - but my comprehension isn't quite there yet.

I just recently build me a parentheses Fuzz with 3 Clipping options and i am torn between Silicon Cleeping because of the, what i learned now, the lowest tipping point which makes it more "round" i guess overall and no diodes on the other side because it feels the most like a nice Amp distortion with nice Dynamics. Cheers! Nice Video as always!

Preferred the red LED clipping diodes the most for sure - the short sustain... gives more control of reverb etc. Would love to hear the glass germaniums, and maybe a mix of the of the diodes together, through buffered/op amp circuit clean before clipping possibly. Thanks for the video :)! very informative

I found your channel the other day and it's been a huge help getting me to understand pedal circuits. I wish I had known this during my EE Classes, I would have paid attention! Can you do a video that talks about (or even shows on the oscilloscope) the difference between a fuzz pedal and a distortion pedal? There seems to be a lot of confusion/overlap and I would love to know the differences from a component and output perspective.
