How To Build Full Length Front Porch With Low Roof Pitch And Higher Ceiling - New Construction

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

www.homebuildingandrepairs.co... Visit our website today to learn more about porch construction, home design and building repairs. In this video I will provide viewers with one way to design and build a full length porch from one side of the house to the other with a low sloping roof and a ceiling that attaches to the porch beams instead of sitting on top. Information in this video might require structural modifications, building permits or structural engineers approval before building.

    I watched your videos and was able to build my backyard patio cover by myself. Only had help with roofing. 50X16 4X6 Posts. 24X24 footings 2X8 Rafters 2X8 facia 4X10 beams 10 feet apart 3/4 plywood. After that I built 2 more for a customer. Thank you for taking the time to teach and make awsome videos.

    I built something similar two years ago. I wish I’d seen this beforehand. I simply slid my rafters into the attic and fastened them into the truss. The weight of the roof is on the top plate (and beam of course). But, I do like this design. Thanks for sharing!

    I want to build a full length porch. The builder of the home said that the trusses are "engineered" and nothing can be added or messed with the trusses. Is this true? Is there a way to add a porch despite engineered trusses? Thank you.

    Great video!! I am following these instructions to add a room to my home instead of a patio. I have a tile roof, the wave like tile. Any idea how I could tile this, specifically where the house roof pitch changes to the addition roof pitch? Any help or guidance is appreciated! Awesome job on this. - Dave.

    Usually water proof membranes will be installed first, then tile over that to prevent leaking on low slope roofs.

    @@gregvancom sounds reasonable, I'm a fan of pressure blocks ,up here in bc we pretty much got all our practices from California, such as a California corner,were you bump out the corner post the exact thickness of the sheathing of the attached wall,saving time and hassle of trying to get sheathing overlap. Most engineers won't let you do it now, unless you put some straps on it,say every foot. Thanks for the posts.

    Do you have a video that shows how to figure out the angles for where the roofs meet and the pitch changes on the gable subfascia? I'm building a house that has a main roof pitch of 6/12 and the porch roof is a 3/12 and when I attach the subfascia to the lookouts on the gable where they meet is there a formula or some other way to figure the angle that needs to be so they connect nice? Do I put a plumb 6/12 to a 90 degree square cut for the 3/12 or square cut the 6/12 and put a plumb 3/12 or how would you recommend making that connection? Hopefully I'm explaining it well for you. Thanks

    You explained it correctly and I don't have any videos on that yet, but did put your suggestion on my list. I usually attach one, like the top and then hold the other up using some bracing to support lower fascia and then mark the intersecting lines.

    Looking to do something similar to this to my front porch this summer. I’m concerned with the ability of the trusses to support the extra weight of all that lumber where they tie in to the existing roof. I always thought they were only designed to handle their snow load plus a safety percentage. Would they support all this extra lumber and their normal or heavy snow load?

    You would need to contact the truss manufacture or an engineer for more information. I will be providing a few more ideas to reduce the weight put on existing roof framing in future videos.

    I am actually trying to incorporate a full length porch like this into my design, but the hurdle for me is the minimum pitch requirement. What is the pitch of the roof over the porch in your design? And is your main roof 12/12?

  • @gregvancom

    @gregvancom

    If I didn't mention it, it's because other designs could have different pitches. I think my design has a 10:12 for main roof and 1:12 over porch.

    You can install shingles if allowed in your area or other roofing materials for low slope roofs. I've seen these porch roofs with tile and water proofing materials under the tile.

    @@gregvancom Thanks for your reply. I have another question - If this is new construction, is there a reason why the roof trusses supporting the roof over the house were not just continued on to also cover the porch area? I am guessing it has to do with the fact that the lateral load on the beam/posts would be too much? Or maybe it's aesthetics due to a difference in slope on both sides of an A frame roof?

    What about ventilation for your house roof? That blocking stops it

  • @gregvancom

    @gregvancom

    Sometime you can install roof dormer vents instead of blocking. If you run into a situation where you double blocked a section of the attic, then you might need to drill some holes to allow air to circulate.

    I don't have any engineer calculations on the wind, but the porch roof could go higher and extend further with more bracing and structural supports.
