From instant Whitney Houston to something metallic and gritty. The DX is so versitile in it’s programming. Those later experiments completly changed the texture of the sound when you played with the feedback. Those first few experiments with the EP sound, I think it’s really the chorus and the reverb that create that signiture Whitney Houston sound.

This is the first time I've thought as sound building as a possibility for me. Thanks for the walkthrough.

This is the way you should present the synths. Only sound building can show the real power of each synth.

The power of the mix

I sold a faulty DX100 a few years back and never really got into FM, but I think I'm definitely going to be buying the DX Reface to go with my CP. I've looked at second hand DX7s on eBay but, in all honesty, the reface suits me better because of the size and the interface.

At last; someone approaching DX programming with an understanding of dynamic sound, instead of playing with feedback ratios. This, I understand! And your approach will work with all of my 4-Op gear (I.e. TX81Z). Thanks!

I bought a Yamaha TX-81Z that works in the same way of Reface DX with 4 operators. In the TX-81Z the algorithm 5 is the base for Eps. The concepts in this video works in the same way for TX-81z. You can do amazing sounds with these FM units.

How do you program it? I read somewhere you could use software but moving things around too quickly overloads the synth

Is there a way to get rid of the high-pitch whine? The best I've been able to come up with is adding an IIR Butterworth filter into the pipeline to attenuate above some 12KHz or so.

Good video. Shows programming FM isn't that scary. A pity they didn't put more performance knobs and sliders on it to take it far enough beyond my DX27+stompboxes that I'd buy one.

@@TommyPlesky no, you only have four operators. If you combine enough sine waves, you can create any sound. You might need 20 or even 100 to approach sounds like a real piano. This only has 4.

It would be nice if you slowed down a little for us beginners. You move too quickly and don’t explain what you are doing a lot of the time in this video and it’s frustrating trying to follow your steps. Thanks though for taking the time to make videos like this.

The Sega Genesis used a Yamaha fm sound chip similar to the ones used in the DX7

Yes that's both possible you connect the two keyboards with a midi cable. You can play the DX with the kross or the Kross with the DX. And yes this saves patches in memory.
