How to Build an Owl House and Attract Them | DIY

How to attract owls | Where to place it | Owls help us and how we can help them | Why have owls around | What you should be careful of | Information about the owls in general | How to make an owl box | Why I built an owl house
In CM: 25-30 deep/25-30 wide/50-60 high/12,5-13 hole/10-15 sawdust in bottom (not fine dust)
In Inches: 11" deep/ 11" wide/ 21,5" high / 4,92 -5" hole / 5" sawdust in bottom.
Attraction: Place it in a tree 5 meters up. They like leaf forests but also a mix of leafs/and needletrees. There should be some open patches around. And last but not least there has to be rodents to hunt.
Why: Owls are great hunters of mice and rats and you don't have to worry about using your energy. Be lazy build a owl house :)
Careful: Of placing it within 20-30 meters of a house or where people walk. It will attack if people get to close when there are babies to protect.
Info not in film: I read that with a owl present in the area the rodents are 30% less up and about. This is the best rat and mouse repellent to have around. In combination with a cat or two to do the ground work you should be well covered.
I Big Thanks to Martin Mecnarwski!!

*_Thumbnail owl picture: Martin Mecnarowski (se description for link)_* 27. February 2021 Update: 08:30 PM : First I heard a Tawny Owl 10 meters from my house. Then I stuck my face outside and saw a owl shaped bird fly... How Awesome isn't that!! 🙏 Now I am hoping for guests. The noise it made was a bit eeerie... but I'm superstocked! MORE OWL INFO HERE! 😄 *_Attracting an owl_* First you need the right sized box for your owl. Sometimes there are owl sighting webpage for your area (there is one in Norway) - There should be owls nearby. You need to place it in an area where there are plentifull of mice or rats (Fav food). Close to the forests edge with leafy or a mix with needle trees are prefered. If you can check all the above then chances are in your favour. According to the "Owl rules" in my area, they find new accomodation when readying for the new crew of offspring. I expect that to happen around march 2021 and will make an update video at the end of April 2021. I will also make another owl house, placed atleast 200meters (600ft) away from the first one (territorial disputes) to increase my chances of attracting them. This place is packed with rats (I NEED AN OWL NOW😂) and my cat can't eat all the mice around. I have caught mice in the 20's in my traps. I have to try to keep the numbers down, it's a mouseyear in Norway, and my house has got some mouse entrances that I have not found yet. If you put up an owl house, check it and you only find a mouse in it.. It is a owl male trying to attract a female. Thanks for watching and I hope to see you in late April 2021 for the follow up :) *Have a great day!*

Yeah that's a great idea! I love it when business includes animals/nature as part of their model. I've read some wineries also use falcons to scare away some birds that eat grapes too... Go ECO! :)

I need a barred owl house! My problem is getting it up into a tree! Have a barred who lives in our woods. Comes early evening/night and hangs out by my bird feeders. She scoops up the mice that come to eat the seed on the ground. Great reduction in mice in the house this winter! I want to show my gratitude. I would install a hot tub in her house too. She deserves it!!!

You don't need to climb a tree to install an owl box. Just erect a post 15ft.-20ft high with the owl house on top. Make it so you can tilt the post up and back down again so you can clean the box out after every season. That's what I'm doing now.

Hello my friend, To dig half a log of trees to make a nest, you can use the saw saw. In 1: bring out the saw blade under table of a few milimeters. In 2: Passing the half log by attacking by is center with an angle of 45 °. In 3: Increase the blade height each pass by a few milimeters. No more time to realize but a magnificent finished rendering, it is a helping hand and a good metric to catch, watch out for the hands. Well to you Alain de Belgique.

Haha! I first thought that your thumbnail showed a Ural Owl, usually one of the most fiercely protective owls, particularly when their young are fledging, and for some time thereafter. If you want these as neighbors/guests, keep their "hotels" far from your residence and travel routes. They are known as "Slaguggla" (attacking owl) in neighboring Sweden for very good reasons. The photo actually shows Martin Mecnarowski's Free License photo of a Tawny Owl edited into a photo of your owl hotel. Even these can be dangerously protective; photographer Julian Hosking lost an eye to a Tawny Owl. Owls usually attack to defend nests and fledgelings in complete silence, though Great Horned Owls often utter warning/anger calls between flying strikes. Many people who are completely unaware that owl nests/babies are nearby are suddenly struck by taloned feet in the darkness.

Wow! You have the eyes of an owl :) I have mostly made 120 views videos and did not think about crediting, that was wrong. I added a line in the description for M. Mecnarowski and thank you for pointing it out. I want to help the flying creatures around and hope the goal justifies the means. And thanks too for contributing with great information about Slaguggla and the Kattugle (like we Norwegian calls the Tawny Owl).

Woodtube, Loved the video after watching several by the barn owl trust in the UK. Going to build one on my property here on the Calfkiller River in Tennessee. Also, love the pair of the pants you have on with the padded knees! I live in Tennessee, USA. Do you know where I can find them in the internet and do I have to live in Norway? Thanks, Tom in Sparta, TN

Hi Tom! The pants are 15 years old now, so they can take a beating. I found some similar on Amazon so it shouldn't be to hard for you to get it. I leave a link at the end here. Let me know if the link don't work. Thanks for watching and best of luck with the Owls! and do remember to buy the pads also, they usually don't come with it.. I have a wood problem , could you please advise ? How can I make a side porch with a wooden floor into a workable aviary ? The problem is the poop . I want to keep the floor because I like wood and second any man made floor requires a level surface . It is a old house and you can roll a marble on the floor downward . How can I deal with bird poop and wood ? Thank you .

@@MartinWoodStudios .. We have an owl, maybe a couple of owls that come around and gather up squirrels off of our bird feeders.. I probably don't have as much property as you do. They only have a few acres, But it is all wooded. I have given it over to nature and birds mostly.. I'm going to give the owls a try I find them very fascinating.. as my father once told me "you'll never hear the word yes if you're afraid of the word no". and " you'll never succeed if you don't try" .. thank you for the video.

@@Subcoolschool It's a true blessing giving nature back. Last year we planted a lot of flowers to feed the bumblebees and the others that love those kind of things. No such things as weeds, insects love it! and this year it's blossoming all over the place. Wise words from your father - I have tried and failed a lot of times and still I try and fail. The trick is to never give up :) Owls are super cool and hopefully next year we will get new neighboors

Try building a barn owl shelter. After reading more about owls I think they are the better hunter of rats. Yes, they will kill and eat rats. Introducing Weasels could be considered too if that is a possibility for you.
