There are some folks out there who live day to day and so cut off from the rest of the world they have no idea what was, has or is in current events. That's simple living to some, but having a home, growing your own food / medicines and just everyday life is hard work. I remember when mom only went to the store for flour (25lb bag of Robin Hood), sugar and yeast. Of course there were some other items like canning lids, sewing thread, dress material. Her and my grandmother did it all. We went barefoot in summer, saved up for a new pair of shoes for school and winter time wore rubber goulashes over them for protection against the foul weather. We have too much nowadays. Kids no longer look forward to saving up for things, it's all instant gratification. I miss those days dearly, gone are the old folks who tried to teach us and now we're left with only a few memories. Appreciate what you have. If you have plenty, share and give till it hurts. Is good to be humble.

Shawn you remind me so much of my dad he did so much, stayed busy all the time and loved to build and restore things, fewer and fewer like him and you each generation and I blame that on society, we have let our core values and work ethics slip. I thank you for showing people there is another way and I hope this inspires them to follow in your foot steps.

A good item to have for 18th Century Reenactors. Had one of these made at Fishkill Supply Depot in Fishkill, NY. I am with the 5TH NY Regiment who has used it a few times. LOL! You even used the bare feet with building, good for you. Using logs inside the mold is a good idea.

I remember in the past on my grandmother's homestead she would do a "bread bake" to take advantage of the fuel necessary to heat the oven. She would make several loaves plus about 1/2 loaf extra dough. She used the extra as a timer. When the oven was ready, she raked out the fire, shoved the loaves in then the extra dough was used as a gasket around the door. When the dough of the gasket was done, so were all the loaves. We kids used to grab the gasket dough and munch on it. It was a bit cindery, but we loved it.
