How to Build a Torsion Box Workbench - Part 1 | I Can Do That!
Фильм және анимация
There have been a variety of work surfaces in the I Can Do That shop - from sawhorses and plywood, to elaborate benches. In this episode (and the next, it's a two-parter), we've finally answered the need. Our I Can Do That workbench is built simply, sturdily and affordable. We used plywood and home center materials with basic but useful storage options, a face vise, and bench dogs. And we even make it mobile!
✔️ Purchase the expanded construction plans for the workbench and you'll get a step-by-step guide that walks you through the entire build www.popularwoodworking.com/pr...

wonderful presentation. You guys are fun to watch and I learned as well. Thank you.
I bought this for my friend for his birthday as we just moved into a new house and he finally has room for a workshop. The bench was very easy to set up kzread.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh They center support is a little difficult to snap in and out of place at first but at least then we know the bench is secure. It was a pleasant surprise when we saw it came with clamps. I apparently missed that in the description. My friend loves the versatility of the bench. Great starter bench for his workshop and easily transportable all over our property. I wish the bench was a little taller but the other features of the bench more than make up for that.
I picked up some good ideas for the bench I’m designing for my workshop. The dowels for added strength will definitely be incorporated into my build. Thanks.
Very good! Looks very strong! I like the hard wood inserts, very smart! Thank you.
Not a bad looking bench. Substantial.
Vary nice design, with an easy to fallow walk through. Thank you for making this video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
👏👏👏👏👏👏esto es recomediante!
I randomly had this video pop up in my feed. I was surprised to see the familiar face from the Cincinnati Woodcraft store. I talk to John the time and never knew his name. I've been a regular customer there for so long that it would be way too awkward for me to ask his name now. So thanks for that. Oh, also, nice video and thanks for the tips.

Brian Knab great salesmen have their names embroidered on their polos or shop coats. Who would you refer people to? You know that guy at Woodcraft, the tall guy with glasses...
You should consider feeding material on a miter saw from left to right, if you are right handed and right to left, if you are left handed. Also, instead of marking your tool with a sharpie use a stop block with a clamp. The stop block clamp method is safer and consistent, no need to fidget with the material on your mark. Once that is set you can cut dowels of the same size as much as you need.
This seems like more work than a mortise and tenon. I suppose it is easier to get a strong joint this way as people are more accustomed to using hardware to join wood.
I like how you left the guard on the saw. So many leave it off saying that it's so we can see better (like we don't know already) and then tell us to use all safety measures:/. Friend lost half a finger last year, no guard. Lucky. I lost 3 about 40 years ago so careful since
Nice
Great video. If anyone wants to make those lag bolt holes you guys made in the legs to look significantly cleaner, e.g., no visual wood fiber tears, use a 3/4" forstner bit instead of a spade bit when you drill out the recessed space for your lag bolt heads. :-)
Wow that saw sounded like it was bogging down on the dados.
We've got the biggest Sjorbergs workbench in our shop on those casters. They're great. Now I'm spoiled and refuse to have a workbench without them.

We should race our benches at some point...Ohio vs. West Virginia!
Use a backer board when cutting dowels on a miter saw
21:00 Its much easier to just know the measurement of your circular saw offset and subtract that from your needed material length. Then you don't need to try to hold your saw and the straight edge simultaneously. you can just clamp your straight edge to your pencil line.
It looks like you were holding the dowels on the right side of the blade using your left hand. That puts your left arm in the path of the blade in the event of a kickback, a very real possibility cutting those large dowels.
You two have IMPECCABLE chemistry!
a ruler for the back has glue on back lays flat on the metal
"I couldn't do that crappy of a job" building a bench! Just kidding! 😄 Im thinking about building that style legs for my friends first bench! The top will be random orientated local Maine hardwood glue up that I had milled up last year. Yellow birch, oak, maple oh my... Thank guys great job
first time i have seen a torson box made that way diferent
Do u have a link to Part 2 please...Can't find it
I am enjoying this video. I do have a question which I hope you answer. Why didn’t you glue the hardwood dowels into the stretchers?
@JayBates

No benefit of doing so. The hardware prevents them from moving.

The unglued dowel is replaceable. If, for example, the bench is dismantled and reassembled (e.g. for relocation to a new workshop), any damage to the screw hole is really easy to remedy by using a new piece of dowel.

Funny ... considering it’s sponsored by Titebond.
Would love to see more inexpensive options. I’m a beginner in the world of woodworking, and as such I’m still adding tools. I can’t spend close to $100 for casters. It would be great if you’d show options from big name home stores or Amazon.

I agree this is maybe beginners level design but by all means not weekend warriors budget. Your * I can Bench * is like buying car for $500 and put rims & tires that are worth $5k... makes no sense... if using more reasonable priced accessories, it would be great weekend warriors bench 👍👍👍

Great design and I like the dowel joints. Anybody got a table saw that accepts dado blades and a stack of dado blades I could borrow?
Hey guys, I can't find the next video for this workbench
That Bosch appears to be really underpowered. Not only with the dado stack, but even trimming that 2x4. Really glad I didn’t buy that saw. Lol. Great video.
I have a workbench with a torsion top and would love to hear some ideas on how to work without dogholes. I have a vise at the end which is fine for my smaller tasks but for longer work pieces I'm always trying to come up with creative clamping. My bench also has drawers in the center that go all the way down to the lower stringer, blocking my ability to use holdfasts.

Pat, I'm giving away some of part 2, but in building our torsion top we ran two center supports the length of the top (good for torsion control an solidity) and placed them so that our dog hole row could be drilled through one of the supports. Voila, a "solid" top.

Hi Pat: I suggest you watch this video. Seimsen is not only entertainly wry in his humor, but the video is very thought provoking. There are many ways, with common clamps and some jigs/fixtures to hold your work. kzread.info/dash/bejne/q6qc0I-Jccmrh5c.html

Is that standard HD "whitewood?" Or did you use Douglas Fir?
So, only one of you wore ear protection even though you are both roughly the same distance from the circular saw. Does sound only affect the saw operator? ;-)

Maybe he does not use power tools that often while the guy that used it in the video does all the time. One of use is not going to cause damage daily or even once a week will cause damage or usage for an extended period such as for an hour. The user has to make that decision and if they are ok with the risk then it is their decision.
Why didn’t you glue the dowels
31:10. 3 sides?
I had a set of the threaded spade bits and put them away. They grab way to hard and with a hand held drill can injure your wrist easily. An idea that wasn't necessary.
@EOTG_AK
5 жыл бұрын
Those spade bits are for contractors where it is all about speed and 1/16ths don't matter. Hard to believe these guys don't have a proper set of Forstner bits
@jimk5307
4 жыл бұрын
lujon Yep, really about fast holes through the lumber, not clean holes. For clean holes you use either a forstner or a normal spade bit (no screw thread) so it doesn’t drag the bit through. Not the only thing odd about this production.
I love the awkwardness

Those are lag screws, not bolts.
that is the problem with toy wannabe table saws
You sometimes forget, that you have European watchers, which have no dados available. And not everyone has a routertable. Please think about this. Cheerio.
@stuarts7188

Rob V. - not allowed in Australia either. I use a router for dados and you can make some good jigs.
@alfredneumann4692
6 жыл бұрын
Short add-on answer: In Germany there no offer for dado-blades. The main reason is: The arbors of the tablesaws are to short for mounting dadoblades in it. Yes, you can import dadoblades. But for what? You can't mount it. And if the arbor would be long enough, the dadoblades have the wrong inner diameter. Here we have metric 30mm (in most of the saws) and the dados are in inch. So the bird is eaten by the cat. :-(

You don't need a router table, just a straightedge and a router will work. That's how I did it until I got a dado stack. Still have all my fingers!

Hard to do woodworking without tools.. ;-)
Uh, a "torsion box-like" workbench. Torsion boxes typically have a grid of beams on the inside - I mean just google the term. Really like the tip on the oak dowels to strengthen the lag bolt connection. If you guys are going to hold yourselves out as teaching woodworking, using terms carefully will help your audience.
8:45 Using a ink pen to mark your lumber? REALLY?
Stodoys has very good designs and plans.
Use a frigging impact wrench for the lag bolts. Manual is slow and a total waste of time.
I could do with less chit chat
I started with Woodglut plans.
Woodglut is a good solution for every woodworker.
Where is Chad?
I made it with Woodglut plans!
Seems to me that these guys actually hate each other and only making this video for a job...the awkwardness between the two is almost comical.
I finished part two. Don't watch this. Keep searching. The table top alone would be categorically insufficient for any medium or heavy duty work.
What's the point of the box? There are better easier ways of making it structurally sound, and not waste space or material.
Painful presentational style
Painfully slow.
What aim of this video? You you are doing $100 workbench using tools on few thousands of dollars.

You could easily build this whole thing with a drill and circular saw (or a brace/bits and hand saws if you wanted)....and get pretty far along in building in the amount of time it took to watch this video.
Take those silly guards off your saws. And nobody wears hearing protection. Also, David, I loved your role on punk’d when you were a kid. You were too funny. Ps Chad is hotter than you 2
