HOW TO BUILD A SOLAR BOTTLE BULB 3.0 (UPDATED 2013)
Liter of Light has been going through several refinements to make sure that the solar bottle light is done properly. We are sending this video for people wanting to build.
You can also reach us at info@aliteroflight.org
Some important lessons we learned :
- Use always a sheet metal scissors for cutting round edges to make sure that the hole in the roof is as close to the diameter of the bottle as possible ( you will have to glue the underside!)
- Sand very well the bottle till the shiny part is removed. The glue will not stick on to the plastic
- The top portion where the bottle meets the plastic is where most leaks happen. You must use a tougher glue than just an elastomeric sealant. Use a SikaFlex 11FC glue or an epoxy sealant to make 100 percent sure this is sealed properly.
- Always use PET soda bottles ( 1 L, 1.5 L, 2 L ) to make sure that it does not easily break. DO NOT USE plastic water bottles.
- Use a guide in cutting the roof that assures that the bottle fits snugly though the roof. You will have to seal this from the underside so don't freehand cutting the hole.
-Use a guide plastic bottle filled with cement to open up the cut metal sheet so you will not have to damage the empty plastic bottle.
- Seal the underside of the bottle cap once you placed distilled water and bleach to prevent leaks.
-Place a 1 1/4 inch pipe covering the top and around the plastic bottle cap as this is prone to cracking with the infrared rays of the sun.
Good luck and be safe installing a Liter of Light.

Well done Illac Diaz! Philippines is beautiful country, and I enjoyed traveling there. Glad you are helping people with such a simple and effective solution. Keep up the great work!
Absolutely brilliant- simple and effective way of getting more light into a dwelling that's dark inside. Thank you for sharing this!
Great project and video instructions. One suggestion I'd like to make is that you shouldn't rivet in the valleys of the corrugated metal where the water runs down. The high points(ridges) or sides(slopes) are better positions for all your rivets. Keep up the good work!

- Cebu, Philippines Kudos to Liter of Light! More than the ingenuity ala "Mc-Gyver-style" this brings to fore one of the most basics of human needs - LIGHT - and making it more accessible (i.e. affordable) to a greater number of people (in the Philippines, as well as around the world) who otherwise would have been left in the dark because food will take the highest order of precedence in their household's budget. In the Philippines, LIGHT is primarily sourced from electrical utility companies which in return are generally dependent upon fossil fuels (e.g. coal, crude oil, petroleum, etc.) to power-up their large grids. Energy/Power Per capita spending in the Philippines takes a larger proportion than that of healthcare. I would long for the day that that proportion would shift. For this world is abundant with renewable energy, and replete creative minds. Healthcare (i.e. inclusive of quality and nutritious food; clean and potable water) should take the lion's share of any family's budget. Deplorably, in the Philippines, it is not the case. Energy+Power+Transportation+Communication, collectively, takes the largest proportion combined in our per capita spending. In fact, part of the cost of extracting and distributing water, is attributable still to Power/energy industries. Thus, the indispensability of the Power/energy industry cannot be overemphasized. However, every bit of effort to veer away from our reliance of traditional fossil fuels to produce power and energy will be a welcome treat. To borrow the word of the famous astronaut, it may be a "small step for man, but a giant leap for mankind." When i am done with my studies, I wish to join the cause...
excellent idea!!! hope the whole planet get the information and enjoy FREE natural light

Great idea, Illac Diaz! You never run out of ideas!
For people questioning about who actually invented this and complaining about it, let me tell you something. Yeah sure i agree that this isnt really an “invention” and this method has been known in the developed world (like Japan) for decades before this project first emerged. However, it is really about who had the means and the motivation to implement it widely to help the less fortunate.... and we must give credit to this man for that.

MOHAMMAD KHALID I was thinking that one could use 12v batteries and charge them during the day with a small generator or solar, and wire an led into the cap of the bottle. That way, the bottle could scatter light around the room at night.

Another thought. Could a different shaped bottle be used? Some water bottles have different shapes.
This is a concept that will be adapt sooner or later in houses, buildings, it will be part of a architectural process, simple ideas start from these ideas, and who knows it can be used in underground shelter in the near future, IDEAS ARE LIMITLESS IT JUST HOW YOU USE IT FOR IT'S PURPOSE. THINK BIG!
Great! And am so much interested. Thanks, Sir Illac, for the idea. More power.
thank you so much for sharing this good idea.
2 questions. 1. Can you use this on asbestos-style roof? 2. In a country where the sunshine is not so strong as in Phillipines, what will be the equivalent wattage result? 50 watts equivalent in Phillipines was mentioned in first video. Would there be sufficient light in a European country?
Thank you for this video. I have damaged quite a few iron sheets in trying to get natural light

thanks for this video.. God bless
going to build one they seem awesome and simple.
Nice piece of innovation. But what happens at night? Is there still light?
very nice.. i will post this where and anytime i can,.. thank you

In the next version of this tutorial you should be sure to say centimeters instead of millimeters. I also agree with adding subtitles.
if im not mistaken that yellow handle tin snip is for straight cuts but can also be be used for curves....if you want the one for real curves its the one with red or green handle cant remember which is for right and left cut
Do you have an instructional video on how to make the one with a circuit using solar cell and a diode? I need the list of materials for the circuit and the circuit diagram. Please help me!
does the bleach and distilled water mixed into a bottle create light that bright or do we have to add some chemicals into the bottle to get that brightness??
How about the UV exposure when using that lamp?

Hacksaw will give a cleaner cut and less chance of leakage or jagged cuts.. Files and wet/dry sandpaper are good for taking off burrs and making a better surface to bond new light with existing roof.

Hello guys.I am writing from Cameroon.Good job.can the light be use at night or only if there s moon light
wow its amazing
What a mm for them? Because it looks like 2 cm each. But my guess its the concepts im interested in.
May I ask Sir, how many months or yrs to use this bottle bulb?
This is so awesome !!!
Has anyone made this before? And if you did, does it work? I have a science project to do and want to do this udea but I need conformation to see if it actually works.
Tyvm... great share!
Can I use bleaching powder?
PLEASE CLARIFY WHAT WE NEED TO GENERATE LIGHT
I like the idea. If I can go green, I'd rather. But here is my question. If the bleach is only good for a few years and you have epoxied everything down. What do you do 3 years from now when the bleach has dissipated? Knock more holes into the roof? A way to loosen the glue? Thank You MB

You just put some bleach into the bottle after it dissipates I guess.
great video. Is there a video on how to wire one to a switch ?
I think it's important to acknowledge the inventor of this wonderful invention - he should be nominated for the Nobel Prize given the impact he has had on so many people. A humble and inspirational man: Alfredo Moser: Bottle light inventor proud to be poor bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23536914
Does it require constant sunlight ?
Isn't it cheaper to just get translucent roof to let the light in? Aside from the recycled bottle, the materials needed to complete this project seem expensive -- specific cutter, baterry operated drill, glue/gun?5

Wonderful idea. Tremendous help for the poor. You can also choose to put a tablespoon of homemade colloidal silver, instead of bleach. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You should ribbot the roof at the TOP of the curves instead of at the bottom or the lowest part of the curves, because the water gathers at the bottom of the curves, and therefore is more likely to penetrate the ribbots or rust them away over time... Otherwise a great project that is an inspiration to all countries around the world!
very helpful thanks
You should put it on a test :) just saying i already watched it a year ago and its work hope this will be a simple project of the goverment :)
You say that the bleach is to keep the water clean, so what is in the water that makes it glow?
Can this be used to illuminate plants grown by indoor hydroponics?
@LourensTrompie
Ай бұрын
Probably not, due to loss of energy its highly unlikely to be effective.
a good use for darker area which we mostly nee to open the lights during the day to find or do something...
You could glue tin foil around it to deflect more light at it during the times of the day where there is low light. Dawn and dusk. To make the cap removable is as easy as using plumbers sealing tape and covering the cap with glued-on tinfoil. So you can replace the water without removing the bottle. There's 10 year lifespan glowing paint you can put on tape and apply so you can light up the interior for another 4+ hours but the light is fairly dim.
I would have sealed the rivets too. How many lumens does this provide?

Those tools are not complicated and it’s not expensive. Anything contrary to that is in your mind. Start by imagining having all you need and expect to get what you need. Next do something(s) to get what you need. Resources (and even money) are an exchange of faith coupled with action. If you’re missing either faith or action anything will become expensive to you. If you lack in either faith or action you will be poor.
Great idea. Can you not just put sky light or the clear plexiglass?
